Ahhhh, here you all are! It's taken a few days to find this thread but I figured you guys would probably be hanging around here someplace. So it's happening then eh? 9pm on the 2nd you say, from a start point to be announced on the 1st? Well, I'm not making any promises but I'll see what I can do ... otherwise I'll just follow the trail of prosecco corks and ferrero rocher wrappers one morning in the following week. Oh, and by the way ... HAPPY NEW YEAR for Friday!

Will there be different ship classes, or is it run-what-ya-brung? Or is that part of the big reveal?

There's always a run-what-ya-brung class in the buckyball run. That's where I've always run it. For folks that are a little more "specialized" ElectricZ and Bucky do carve out a sidey class too that gets their own leaderboard but don't mess with your ship config in that class, the 'roo gets mean.

I'm a patient person but I don't think I want to cover 500 ly in a Sidewinder. ;)

Go for the three-fer here. Birdnose, DaveB's got it. Unless you're one of those obsessive-compulsive types who has to have the max range/fuel efficiency for the run (not mentioning any CMDR names, you all know who you are :p) fly what ya want. There's someone who always builds the primo race machine and plots the perfect course, but a lot of folks including myself fly what they have. Me, personally, I always get burned when I try to turn my beloved Asp Shipwrecked and Comatose into a lean, mean, racing machine and I'm STILL looking for an A5 fuel scoop after the BRC's "Mischief Mile" race made me ditch the scoop to qualify to run. The only real restriction Buckyball 9 has is none of that FSD boost crap. Winners just say no to performance enhancing fuel additives!

Now, as DaveB also pointed out there's typically a "stock" option for a Buckyball that allows CMDRs who want to take bank accounts and machine specs out of the equation and run on a level playing field where everyone runs the same ship. For shorter races that means a Sidewinder, but for BBR9 it's going to be a Hauler. Those little suckers can, well, HAUL. Plus they're cheap enough almost anyone can afford to run one without worrying about the Bank of Zaonce Insurance adjusters putting a bounty on your head... The Stock Haulers will have their own leaderboard. Everybody else will compete together. (There will be no stock Hauler class for the live run, but you can run a Hauler in it if you want to.)

There's no big reveal, either. This is a pretty straightforward race, start to finish. I just haven't locked down the starting point is all. I'm lazy like that.

Rather theoretical question ATM (probably won't be in the bubble either way), but would it be possible to join the live group as a spectator, or would one have to join as a racer in order to se the chaos in the toast rack? (Hey, wouldn't that be a nice ship name?)

Hmmm... Don't know about that. Instancing is kind of spotty as it is, and though we're never going to get everybody around the globe in the same instance at once, it would be good to keep as many spots open in similar instances as possible for the racers. I guess it depends on demand. Ashnak, if you're the only one who wants the backstage pass, it'll probably be okay. If a zillion screaming fans show up, well, we might have to toss up some restrictions. So for now, we'll just have to wait and see.

Aw crap, he found us! Everybody act normal. (Happy New Year to you too, Alex! Hope to see you on 2 JAN!)

I'll keep posting this until you do lol

I'm not saying bribes will work, but they sure can't hurt! ;)

Yeah I also seem to struggle turning my Asp into a racing spec too, I just fly it with the same spec as when I go exploring (though I might drop the lasers for this race ;)). I think the main reason I do it is because the second best thing about Buckyball races (after the lunatics that race them) is the fact that they make you a better flyer, as you mentioned in the OP and if I'm racing what I'd normally fly, then it can only add to the benefit :D

Does Ashnak have a twitch or youtube streaming channel? Then you could let one in a still satisfy the hordes of screaming fans

I've been feeling pretty ill for a few days, but I intend to be sat at the starting line on Saturday, all dosed up with lemsip and ready to race.

Hang on, Saturday? drat ... for some reason I thought it was Sunday. Definitely won't be able to make Saturday, I'll be driving back up from Southampton. Oh well, I'll be thinking of you guys and in my mind I'll be ripping apart the light years in a bid to be first through the Obsidian Orbital mail slot.

So how did the accident happen?

Well officer, I swung real close to the Little Chef's front entrance but the planetary breaking effect failed to kick in and I loop of shamed straight into the back of the plaintiff's Renault Meganne.

Well son, we scanned you before you managed to park so I'm afraid it's the death sentence for you!

Why is this happening?

The earlier buckyballs I kept the guns on the Schartzschild Radius because they were run in open and I didn't want to face the rebuy on a 'conda thanks to not having my pewpew with me. MoM's work on the AI makes me inclined to keep the guns for this one too, even if the live event is going to be in a private group

Hmmm.. it's tempting though - I could strip her down and get a 30ly jump range outta her.... *slams forehead on desk narrowly missing keyboard* No... NoNoNo... snap out of it Dave... One misjudgement and that would be a DNF...

ETA: If I decide to strip anything down for this run, it's gonna that old hauler I've got stashed somewhere.

And just a reminder of the excellent video Cmdr Alot produced after the last ElectriZ Buckyball run :)

Oh, one last as...

ElectricZ has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space.

I can run a Teamspeak server on reload.servebeer.com, on my living room box - should be good for 20 or so users :)

Raiko! Reload! Good to see both of you. Alec, sorry to hear you won't make the live gig but hope you'll be able to put up a time in the following week! Reload, I wonder if we say his name three times if your old nemesis Dixie Flatline/CMDR Henry Dorsett will show up for you...

Dixie Flatline...
Dixie Flatline...

That would be awesome! I wouldn't want it for any official communication - not everyone has teamspeak or uses voice, but it would just be fun to have for chat. Similarly, over on mibbit (https://client01.chat.mibbit.com/) I've created the channel #ShotgunShine as a place for Buckyballers to gether and chat, and it'll be live during throughout the week for anybody looking to get a word in. (Mibbit's got a web client so no software is needed.)

Well, just so you know, the particular choice of starting point was made solely because it had large landing pads. I did it just to accommodate the big ships, DaveB, so when the complaints start coming in I'm sending them over to your landing pad. ;) Are you going to want to face the angry mob in a teensy-weensy hauler or your big bad Conda? :p

OK so got everything hammered out, I think... After weighing some options we're gonna keep this a simple A -> B race, a quest to get the fastest time across the bubble. The Shotgun Shine has docked at Obsidian and will be open for business tomorrow. Expect the registration thread later today/early tomorrow depending on your time zone and we'll start the process of dimpling Obsidian Orbital like a golf ball. :D

Also, if anyone has a spare second, try out the Brand New (well, old, but never used) O-fficial Buckyball Run Race Entry form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1sjAcHpao9Dk8cx3VXuuk_ClBf9zzorEHphwrXQ4G-_U/viewform?usp=send_form

I set this up at considerable time and expense to help all of you make fewer mistakes when submitting times. Cuz, you know, I never make mistakes.

Sheesh, you and your threads, it's almost you're trying to give me the slip. Anyway, can you post a link in this thread to that thread as and when that thread becomes THE thread, otherwise I'll still be watching this thread when this thread has become an OLD thread while everyone else is over on that thread which will then be the NEW thread.

Ok, are we stripping ships down or not?

Based on Z's comments about running an everday long-range ship in the live run, I was planning on running my Courier Joyeuse in her smuggling/voucher running/dangerous cargo build (speed + shields, ~26 LY jump).

But if we're stripping down, I'm bringing Haulin' A*.

So what's it gonna be? I need to know, so I know how much money I need to make today.

I'll be using one of my ships that has been to the core, so either Deep Blue Yonder (Type 6) or White Lightning (Asp Explorer). However I will be slightly adding to their A*-run spec - I will definitely be running with shields, and almost certainly be taking a planetary vehicle hangar with me :).
