I am curious... Who else here is a dedicated & full-time miner?

PERFECT, since I just have requested acceptance into Mobius! XD

5/75 pirates...
This will take forever.

LOL, really? Well in that case add me. CMDR name: V8UC ALICORN

Always looking for peeps' to chat with while mining. :)

I've repurposed my Asp for mining. Finding it enjoyable, especially when launching prospectors and getting a rush when finding a high value asteroid. Also fun seeing the little collectors hard at work.

Though I wish you could make the drones not collect canisters you eject.

Yup Full time miner here. With occasional other activities including planetary landings, some fighting in Res Sites etc.
Went from mining Hauler to mining Cobra to mining Asp and sat there for ages until the drones came out. That quickly motivated me to work towards my mining Python. Very happy. Take out 80 drones and return within the hour with 128 tons of the top 5 ores (Pain, Plat, Pall, etc) oh and always some Osmium for missions (they pay well but seem rare since horizons).
Love mining. It's a Zen thing.
I do also prefer the scanning method on the SRV. Where so many other want the game to move to Push one button and reveal all. I want the opposite. More investigative scanning. Reveal clues to something just on the horizon... what is that? :)

Aye. I'm still getting to grips with the SRV. I really need to land on more planets.

That would be a nice improvement.

You can either thrust down and destroy the containers as soon as you eject, or I simply use the fact that if you a moving when they return Containers, the containers explode. (Does not hurt the drones or frags)
After dumping if I am still blasting a roid, I watch on the scanner and when they are returning a container, I usually just use the lateral thrusters to slide left and right slightly and boom no more container. Requires hardly any movement a few meters per second does it.

It's handling varies based in the grav. Really low grav moons make it quite difficult to handle as there is hardly any surface contact. But then I travel for ages in the air :)

Oh no. That I expected. What I'm having trouble with is finding stuff on the planet. Haven't found anything yet. Haven't got a clue how the scanner works. :(

I would also say that I enjoy mining the best at the moment. I have an Asp Explorer rigged out as a miner at the moment 76 tons + another 6-8 in the tubs if I'm lucky. Keep only the three P's, Osmium and Gold mostly. Have been averaging around 1.3mcr a trip and sometimes do two trips a session at present. I was a deep sea fisherman for 35yrs and mining reminds me so much of that life. I have another ship, a Cobra MkIVI I qualified for as a pre-order buyer. I have it rigged up as a planetary lander and used it three or four times just to get used to and set up the buggy bindings and get used to landing on planets, moons etc. At the moment I am pushing in the mining as I am saving up to buy a Python which I intend to rig out as a planetary lander exploration miner. Sadly that is the *cheapest* ship available with enough modules etc to fit a full mining, landing, exploring set of gear aboard. I reckon it will cost me around 70 - 75 million credits allowing for a couple or three buy back insurance payments as a fall back. After todays session I have assets of just over 50 million so I am getting there. When I get it I will set out on a long exploration trip, not the 60kly ones outside the bubble that many do but maybe up to 1500ly out from my home base and then a 60 degree turn for another 1500ly before turning back home. Not intending to do maximum jumps, just take my time getting plenty systems to explore, prospect and mine keeping only painite and platinum or perhaps any rares I find and then head to the nearest friendly market to make some more room. http://coriolis.io/outfit/python/07....Iw18eQ==.Aw18eQ==?bn=Basic Python ExploMiner

That sounds pretty cool man. You play in Mobius? If you do feel free to add me.

I started mining recently, and I absolutely love it!

To me it is the most involved form of space-trucking out there.

But I don't see many people talking about their mining exploits... :(

Is there anyone else here who treats mining as their primary activity in ED? I certainly do, I've even invested in a Sidewinder for exploring, just to support my prospecting.

I run a Cobra Mk IV, "The Prancing Alicorn", as my mining platform. She's a steady ship, I'm definitely not one of the haters; quite the opposite in fact. :D

I even have an SRV on board to collect resources from the surface of planets.

i had been playing the game for a year, rushed my 1st account to a conda by trading hard. i missed so much of the game though, so decided to start again.. only problem, didnt have the shtones to delete my save. so instead i grabbed another copy of horizons and started to casually level, doing a bit of everything, then tried mining..

its really enjoyable! just kitted out my new Asp Explorer, running A2 Refinery, A3 collector, and 92 tons of cargo space. im going to upgrade the refinery to an A3 though, i think i need the extra 2 bins. 6 bins are great for the 3 x P's + Osmium, silver and gold, but i get cramp constantly discarding the non essentials lol. so that will make mining pristines smoother.

carrying the srv is a good call, i may do that in the 2 ton slot when i upgrade the refinery. i can probably get away with 4 fewer cargo slots, as i will very likely be sticking to pristine rings in systems with stations. easy to recharge drones and offload the gold and silver. i'v been use the other mined materials to complete missions for main rep and also helping local factions for the bgs. eventually i want to build a mining python, and that will probably me set then, using that as my top tier ship.

After short and painful episode with mining I've had before the introduction of limpets, I've just recently (few days ago) stripped down my Python and turned it into mining barge. What can I say? To my surprise, mining is actually pretty refreshing activity.

I am not seeing myself as dedicated miner though - I imagine it's going to become dull after a while.

I tried some mining the other day. Um... Ok, more accurately, I wanted to try some mining... I kitted out my T-7 with collector limpets (80 tonnes... half my hold... I think I may have overdone it), then took my Asp out with a single mining laser to find a decent site (I wanted to avoid RES completely, and find a pristine metallic ring somewhere to experiment with). Well, long story short, I hunted for the whole evening and never found my mining spot... So I returned and re-kitted my T-7 back to trading.

However, I would actually like to give it a go. And as I also play in Mobius, if you don't mind the company I'd very much like to head out with an experienced miner to learn the ropes. I've a T-9 at the moment, so could either kit that out for mining or exchange it for another ship if that would be better... Is a T-9 any good? :)

Doubt I'll have a proper chance to do this until Sunday evening, but if there are other miners playing in Mobius that don't mind showing me the ropes (and advising what kit to bring), then that would be awesome. I'm CMDR Crank Larson.

Yeah, I really don't mind losing 4 tonnes to the SRV. 48 tonnes and 6-8 limpet drones (working on the number), is enough to haul 200,000-300,000 credits per session, before BB mission bonuses.

Quite good for a small ship specialist.

I did a bit of mining around the time of the CG, stuck with for a bit and saved up enough for a Python. I enjoyed it for a shortish while, but couldn't stick at it for a long time. Going to a RES to mine can liven it up as you can wander off for a fight, but I nearly got jumped a couple of times.

i think that's whats kinda cool with mining, its so easy to swap out modules and run trade or or do some res farming, cz's etc, it seams the modules i have been using are pretty much in the same ball park cost wise as those i would need to swap them out with :)

yeah for sure! not to mention it is a very peaceful, steady way of making a living in the ed verse. i have to admit there is a real buzz from hitting a good source paintite :) i always fancied leaving the bubble and doing some exploration, but i just couldn't get into it. mining is the next best thing in exploration, just happens to be in the bubble for me. i can't believe i hadn't considered taking along an srv.. so i'm glad i dropped into your thread.. it will add something extra, and it is still well within the exploration side of things too.

I have a n00b question. When I log out of the game after doing all my mining, can I log out while there are materials still in my refinery? And, will they still be there when I come back?

Brother, once I'm allowed in Mob, I'll hook up wi ye, I'll get ye some creds hunting big shippies in RES'ses.
I'll split the bounties wi ye. :)

I... actually got richer for something like 160 mil Cr after stripping down the Python for his new mining role. It was pretty expensive combat ship before :)

Yes, you don't lose anything from your ship.

Cheers man.

Cool man. Assuming everything works there'll be some trade dividends for you. :)
