Out For A Quiet Sunday Stroll

This is a fantastic thread.

Gives us a small taste of what will be possible once the galaxy is opened up.

thank you Zarkon!

Thanks for the comments. I'm hoping a dev might jump in and validate my claim.

I've been dumped out of multiplayer into the Zelada system before like many others, but it always loaded up in singleplayer mode. So has anyone else seen anything like this before?

Ok, I was a bit upset since only one person gave me any rep for finding this secret location (thanks again Riedquat). I was thinking people either don't like me or don't care for this sort of thing, which would be weird since I thought a lot of players were hoping to do exactly this sort of adventuring when the game comes out. Last night I realized that most of you probably thought this was made-up, a photoshop or an April Fools gag. I assure you it is not. Sooner or later I hope someone at FD will back me up.

In the meantime tho, I am nominating myself (no one else to do it for me) for a few "First Player To Achieve Something In The New Elite Game" awards. Some of you I'm sure will say this is Alpha and doesn't count, but since ED wont technically be finished for 6-7 more years, I say there's no time like the present to start keeping record.

1) First player to waste 10 hours of flying around in the middle of nowhere and actually found something unique.

2) First player to discover a new section of space that no one even knew existed.

3) First player to discover a new world in game (3 at once even!)

4) First player to discover one of the coolest looking PG worlds seen anywhere yet, both in-game or out of game.

Hmm I'm sure I'd repped you for this, sorry - have some rep! I thought it was sterling work and it's one of the reasons I really didn't want H-space "hops" around star systems. Frame shift drive all the way! :)

If you can fly to the planet or the moon with jetfighter speeds that means they are nowhere near the correct scale and distance!

I'll choose to believe this is just a temporary thing in the alpha, and not representative of the finished product.

Thanks guys. Yes I am sure the scale of space will be quite different once beta/gamma is released. Not wanting to wait around for the Mining Federation to get back with me about my claim (bureaucratic red tape takes ages), I have decided to continue my venture into the unknown. I jumped into the Iota system again with the plan to fly to Cruxis Two, but I spawned inside/underneath another commander and we both exploded!

During the escape pod ride back to Zelada station, I did some looking over of my financial situation. I only had enough credits to replace my Cobra 2 more times before going broke. Since I probably wont be running into any hostiles where I'm heading, I sold my weapons and armor, which gives me enough money to support my expeditions for a good while. I bought the cheapest burst laser just in case.

As luck would have it, there was a ganker sitting outside of the station's entrance, shooting commanders through the bay doors while they were still in the hangar. I gassed it and boosted past him. He took out most of my shields, but I was able to jump back to the asteroid field without taking any hull damage.

After I arrived back in the asteroids, I spun around and started heading for the planet. I didn't see any other commanders on my radar, so I didn't take better precautions. As a result, a pirate running in stealth mode started shooting me in the back (big surprise there).

I was able to out run him, but not before he did heavy damage to my hull and damaged my engine and power unit. Luckily the damage has not affected my max cruising speed nor the drive boost. My thrusters are probably worthless now, but I doubt I'll be using those. I have to admit, those were two of the most pathetic pirates I've seen yet. Neither one could take out an unarmed cobra with no armor.

I have cleared the asteroid field and am currently en route to Iota Cruxis Two. I hope to visit one of the many lakes/seas on it's surface, and maybe get down below the atmosphere. I'll update my journal as often as possible. Zarkon out.

I'm sorry Moridian, but someone had to do this. I think this will be my last adventure (at least until build 4). I can't reach Zelada and I've run out of interesting worlds to attempt to reach. I left my PC running most of the day yesterday, and all of last night. My poor computer needs a vacation!

It took 16+ hour to travel 17,000 km from the asteroid field spawn point to the edge of the upper atmosphere. Our home planet is roughly 12,750 km in diameter, with a circumference of 40,075 km. This means I have flown nearly 1.5 times the thickness of the Earth, or almost halfway around it, just to reach the point where the atmosphere of Iato Cruxis Two starts to vanish, and I am still hours away from nearing the surface.

At 15,000 km the atmosphere texture started to flicker and glitch.
At 16,000 km the atmosphere started to disappear, and the ground started to glitch.
At 17,000 km the atmosphere is almost gone and the ground is disappearing.

This planet is massively bigger than any of the other moons I've visited. I don't know if this world is as big as Earth, but it feels pretty damn huge from my perspective. I hope these numbers help to make Adept feel a little better about the galactic scale used in ED, and this is only the Alpha!

To the FD team, my sincerest apology if I have posted something you weren't ready to show just yet. Please feel free to nueralize the entire forum community if you feel you must.

Thanks to everyone for reading, and a big thanks to FD for an awesome Alpha and the promise of a most spectacular gaming experience.

You, Sir
are a real pioneer.
Thank you for this thread. You proofed that it is is worth to digg into the depths of ED and the potential of the exploration role. Even without a cashreward or a drop or skill.
+1 from me

I must confess to loving the idea (even though risky!) of leaving the computer running and returning at the end of the day to see where i have ended up! Keep on trucking!

I travelled for 2 hrs towards the eclipse, almost 2200 km before finally saving and logging off. Might be another 6+ hrs before reaching the moon's lower orbit.

The picture's ARE pretty... but the crazily poor performance of these spacecraft is just utterly devastating, and this series of posts have been the first to really strike home what an abysmal travesty this game is making of space flight and exploration.

We can bandy around figures like 500m/s all day (ooh that actually sounds quite fast, actshually, sniff).. but to finally see it in context, in the most trivial circumstance of actually flying to a small moon, just over there... EIGHT ' HOURS AWAY, it really slamdunks it home to ya just how crippled this lame duck excuse for 'spaceflight' has been rendered..

I know, best to just admire the eye candy and try to ignore the words and numbers...

ETA: for reference, Apollo 11 approached Luna at 11,176 m/s using 1960s technology..

Before being too hasty, perhaps you should read this. :)

Try to think of our 500ms-1 as our combat speeds, for going anywhere fast in-system, we will have alternatives.

Oh my bad, so he could've used FSD, but didn't feel like it? Or has it not been implemented yet? I thought that was what makes the high-pitched whiny noise? Just having difficulty understanding why someone would spend eight hours doing something that'd take minutes or seconds in past Elites..

I'd be excited at discovering a new moon too if it took that long to get anywhere!

The FSD is a feature that is not in the Alpha build (not yet anyway). If it had been I certainly would of used it. Exploring new worlds isn't part of the Alpha either. I actually spent over 30 hours flying around in the game not expecting to find anything. It's just what I wanted to do. I have wasted way more time than that in many other games over the past few decades doing things that were not nearly as fulfilling. In the previous Elite games I would fly across a single star system for countless hours just for the hell of it. I always wanted to be an astronaut, but I didn't qualify.

Bank Manager: I will need two pieces of identification.
Me: Ah yes. I have my temporary driver's license - and - my astronaut application form... I didn't pass that though, I failed everything but the date of birth.
