48hrs till cv1 pre orders start

I agree with your wait and see approach. I'm too curious to know what HTC have up their sleeve with Vive to go ahead and order the CV1 now. Besides, I'm also waiting to hear the word from FD about support.

I wonder what the HTC controllers cost to make? They don't need to make margin on everything and the pressure will be on to gain market share.

Are you sure it's HTC that are going to make the big announcement and not Valve? 'cause if it's Valve making the announcement, then... it could be a major announcement <fingerbiting>

Its just a shame oculus and ED went there own ways. Man I had people lining up at the doors for demos of ED all those months back when it worked.
I had borrowed a DK2 from a friend. I would put workmates and visitors that "Knew all about Virtual reality" but never tried it, through a quick flight school, in the ice rings. I would then fit them with the oculus and just about everyone said exactly the same thing every time with huge smiles on their face "holy :):):):):):)* "

I am getting the oculus regardless. I would prefer ED to work, but if it doesn't it will be the 2d space game I play when I am not in the oculus :-(

For those wondering about my mention of the "Very big breakthrough":
Cher (can't say her last name in the forums as the bad word filter censors it out), CEO of HTC, reported that Valve and her team made a very big breakthrough which prompted the delay to allow for time integrated the breakthrough into their product. They will be showing it off at CES. Read about it here.

Yeah, personally I'm holding out for hrc vive, not oculus, oculus seems to have fallen a bit behind in terms of vive, and vive has a camera mounted in front, hopefully will allow people to have a way to 'check' things like keyboard and such without having to lift off the headset as you have to do with oculus.

HTC are not in great shape, financially. I suspect they will want to actually make money off the hardware so I'd guess the price difference will not be entirely trivial between the two systems.

Probably pre-ordering the CV1 here as long as it's £400 or less. Any more and I'll wait and see, despite being an Oculus Kickstarter backer so been through the DK1 and DK2 phases.

From what I remember reading about rift and ED is that ED stopped supporting the rift:

I think you are taking FD stance out of context somewhat and there is nothing to worry about.
FD have said multiple times that they are committed to VR and all platforms. They have had some technical issues to overcome with the latest Oculus drivers but that doesn't equate to 'we are dropping support'.

Only having support for one platform would be like supporting just one make of HOTAS. Clearly it's in their interest to support as many different devices and appeal to the widest possible audience of gamers. They have said that at every opportunity.

I fully expect ED to support a wide range of headsets. Oculus and Vive are just the start.

But it is a little telling that the htc/VIVE logo appears on FD's adverts and there is no mention of Oculus. It is also telling that the only space game Oculus ever mentions is Valkyre. I don't doubt that both headsets will be supported, but my feeling is that if there are any issues with the headsets, the VIVE's problems will receive priority.

i dunno why you would pre order when it has no release date..
you could order that and the other one could be released months before it.

There is not a single spec right now that puts the vive ahead of the rift, if anything the rift is ahead.

Not too sure about that. They seem pretty equal at the moment in screen and optics. The HTC Vive roomscale and positional tracking is certanily more advance than the rift.
Lets wait and see what HTC say during CES and thier Tech breakthrough. THe only way to know for sure is to try them out and see which one you prefer.

Well in which case you can wait... But AFAIK you only get eve v if you pre order.

Also does anyone really have any faith in the vive launch? OTOH oculus have a decent track record of getting products out the door

It's worth noting that the 1.0 sdk dropped over the Holiday period. I'd be very surprised if FDEV did not receive priority access to CV1 "dev kits" to work on the technical issues, and compatibility. FDEV have always said that they are continuing to work with oculus, but the real work starts now with this SDK. When they know, I'm sure they will let us know.

Dont forget Frank that Valkyre is a made for vr game built from the ground up whereas Elite isnt. I think Oculus want the vr gaming industry to go this way, as I think they feel this is how you'll get the best VR experience which is what they are all about. All their declared release games are made for vr, and I expect Valve will be doing the same.

I think future priorities towards either hmd's will only be given for technical reasons and/or based on available resources at the time, the usual story there.

No idea why they would take off the Oculus logo though. Could be that until they are absolutely sure it will work like they do with the Vive, that its best to leave it off for now?
