SO Occulus Rift sales start tomorrow 6th of januar: who is getting one?

I guess that's made it a little easier for you DK1 owners to decide which headset to go for <grin>

And you can also have my thanks as well. There may have been lots of companies that had VR experiments hidden someplace in a dark corner of their offices, but if you people hadn't ponied up the dosh then those projects woudn't have been dragged kicking and screaming into the cold light of publicity.

If you are getting one just for ED then do not preorder!
Until we get the official word that the new CV1 will work with ED then you're buying something that just might never work with ED.
I know FD have said they are working on it but they could easily turn round and say "It's too hard, not doing it".
It's not like they haven't done that before (Mac Horizons release, Offline debacle).
Not trying to wee on anyone's chips, just don't buy something for hundreds of £ just for Elite when it's not guaranteed to work.
If you're buying it for VR gaming in generally then have at it, as a DK2 owner it's going to be awesome.

will be interesting to see what price the Oculus sells for in the UK.. if it is a sensible £200-250 price point, good.. more than that, then I will wait and see what Steam VR does instead.

I will patiently wait for others to try it out. I don't intend to upgrade my system for some time as I just finished this build last March (GTX 970 w/ i5 4960). If 14nm desktop cards come out this year, I will probably upgrade in 2017 once the follow up revisions come out.

That said, I want to know how well it performs for other people with 970s before I place an order.

I have a 970 with overclocked i7-4790K. I'll report back when I receive my free-rift if Frontier ever get it to work on Windows 10.

I think i will get a HTC one, if you can really see the keyboard with that cam.
Then again since i will use it for ED only it depends also on the price.

Hey everyone,

With the news that Oculus are starting pre order of their consumer version tomorrow, I wanted to just make a quick post to confirm that we are still actively working with Oculus but currently the only SDK we are able to officially support is 0.6.

We wanted to make sure you had as much up to date information as possible and will let you know as soon as we have any more information.

Fly safe, Commanders!

This is well worth paying attention to. Basically at the moment, the CV1 will not work with Elite: Dangerous. So as Kingston above stated, don't buy one if you want to use it purely with Elite.

Reading between the lines, it seems to be that Frontier are not saying something about this. I spoke to Michael about the SDK support back at EGX, and he was very, very evasive (he more or less tried to run away from me when I asked lol - though he was also very busy and keen to get to where ever he was going. A great guy though, hope he doesn't mind me mentioning this. :D ).

My take on it (which isn't worth much) is that there is something going on with the SDK and Elite, or maybe even with Oculus and Elite that Frontier do not want to comment on. And it might end up being a long while until Elite fully supports the Rift.

All that said - Elite looks awesome on the Vive!! :)

If you're turning down the OR because Facebook bought out the company then you are an idiot.

(I'm not supporting Zucker, mind you)

Big company buys out little company that has a huge product with an expanding market and potentially injects millions into their R&D process, knowing they have to release a better, cheaper, more robust product than the competition.

I'll be waiting until later this year, when both are out and there are legit reviews available for either device.

My only question about all VR heatsets is:

How do you use the keyboard?

:-/

Keyboarding classes!

I don't know if it is still taught in schools but back when I was in elementary we had keyboarding classes. As long as I can find those little nubs on the F and J keys, I'm set. I usually play in total darkness with my kb partially under the desk.

I did not even know it was this soon Oo

Will probably end up getting them but, the consumer ones, wherever I see someone testing them they have those awfull looking headphones on them, I haven't spent as much as I have liking good quality sound to have those in the way, and whilst probably removable, they look quite solid ><

Will also probably end up getting the vive as well, used to own the Oculus DK 1 and it was quite the experience, aside of getting ill and the lower resolution.
