Is Elite Dangerous a Dad's Game Played mainly by "non-gamers"?

Triple Dad ( Since Triple Elite Status is still in progress ) / Fulltime Job ... and a heavy Gamer. Fallout 1-4 / Just Cause 2-3 / X Series / BF1-4 / Battelfront / CoD / Starcraft and so on....

Played Elite in the Original and loved it. Playing it today and yes it's my fav. game.

It seems like you have to be a dad grown up in the 70s to be able to use your imagination and "enjoy" this game.

Not really an argument at all...more of an observation.
Back in the old 8bit days Elite would have been still a "dadgame", in the eyes of the OP, but played by 8+ yr olds.
Games today have much more instant gratification. Awards for this, unlocked achievements for that. Kill, kill, kill. Just silly. Yay, achievement for your character falling 50 feet *sigh*
It's VERY different from back in the 80's where most games took 5+ minutes to load from tape and you had no save game in most games. You needed dedication and the patience of a saint back then.

This is the fourth Elite game in the series, why change the formula just because some of the younger generation "don't get it" and demand more of this instant gratification rubbish. Statements saying ED won't succeed if they don't add this are also rubbish.

Because there has been an evolution in games - not all into the direction of making them more complex, I agree. But you can't argue that ED is anywhere close to certain call of duties in this world, or that anyone here is actually asking for that.
A lot of change hasn't been made to purposefully make games worse, which seems to be your impression. I think you just got left behind for whatever reason, which I think is really sad, as technology allows for whole new worlds of gameplay, which is actually why Braben made this. If you don't want any change, I think it would be best for you to play the original games then?

Yes, there is Call of Duty now; but there is also Dark Souls, or ArmA.
And I seriously doubt that any defender of mainstream and monetization game elements with "instant gratification" has made his way to these forum.

Nope. I was born in 84 and have always liked games like this where I get to use my imagination a bit.

Doesn't stop me playing and enjoying Dark Souls, Assasins creed etc too though, or regular MMOs (UO, then Guild Wars, then Archeage) either.

My 9 year old son loves minecraft for exactly the same reason. He also wants to play ED (as an explorer) for that reason, but isn't very good at the flying yet.

His twin brother just wants to play games like Pokemon, and has no interest in games that require imagination. Age has very little to do with it.

Yup, that's probably why npcs are still such a joke. If they start introducing real challenges into the game the "dad gamers" won't be able to keep up.

Exactly.

Some kids prefer toy soldiers, others prefer legos. Creativity and imagination is not a matter of age.

Favourite games of the past: Command & Conquer series, Total War, KOTOR, Civ, Master of Orion, Lords of Magic, Medal of Honor, Skyrim; more recently The Witcher 3, Dragon Age Inquisition, X-COM, Fallout 4...

Forthcoming games I'm looking forward to: X-COM 2, No Man Sky, Far Cry Primal...

I'm female, born in the late '80s, no children.

I don't think Elite is a "dadgame".

^ Who else has a sneaking suspicion that the above type of posts are probably from NPCs/troll-bots?

Most likely from the "I am l33t gamer and therefore the games I like and the way I play are best. Anyone who wants different is lame and not a real gamer" sense of entitlement crew. You find them on every game forum.

He's wrong too [The guy Theta Sigma is commenting on]. IMO the challenge comes from PVP. If he's still hunting NPCs he's not up to it.
