Wouldn't an airless water world have to just be an ice world? Or does it mean water as in water vapor? There's plenty of worlds covered in water vapor fog that technically don't have an atmosphere.

Yeah. This:

says a water world in vacuum should be an ice world or covered in water vapor.

just forgot to ask

the first number goes from -90 to 90

and the second one -180 to 180 is it right?

I'm not a scientist, though I have an understanding of physics. Would gravity work as a pressure substitute? Could an airless water world exist with liquid water in vacuum if the gravity was high enough?

Well, I'm not a physicist but the pressure will be increasing from the surface downwards to the crust of the planet so the outermost surface should still be an interface with the vacuum of space so very low pressure. If the surface is warm enough, it should be water vapor. If you follow the line to decreasing pressure values from the ternary equilibrium point between the three phases, it shows a direct transition from ice to vapor.

So, as far as I understand, it either is water>vapor>space, water>ice>vapor>space, water>ice>space, ice>space or ice>vapor>space. There is no room for water>space with the vacuum levels at the matter-space interface.

yeah, works just like GPS coordinates; latitude is from -90 (south) to 90 (north)
longitude is from -180 (west) to 180 (east)

Hi guys,

I'm back in the game from a long pause, I see the threadnought is still going strong :D

I've tried to piece together the various systems that are of interest to this UA/Barnacle thing so I made a little F# script to create a 3D plot of them. Not sure it is very useful but but the result is here anyway : https://plot.ly/~Nid/2/elite-dangerous-unknown-artifacts-facts/?share_key=2L3nEAxfrgWExv6Net4oxu

Plotly is quite nice and easy to use from their web site, no need for code like I did. Might be useful for some of us barnacle hunters.

Heppy hunting all, I'm on my way to check out what Pavlou Keep has to offer, it will be my first surface port docking, hope I don't crash like a red shirt in a sidewinder on his first mission :eek:

and if the first bit represents the signal (- or +) ?
1 for minus
0 for plus

Another thing, remember the "BROKEN" code decoded last thread and if:

B=0
R=1
O=2
K=3
E=4
N=5

a base-six code?

if you get a broken nav-beacon and modify the signal of the six letters to send a code base-six, you can transmit any message you want.

ah, I was thinking lat/long (decimal point excluded), and not sure what to do with the 154...
as in: 14.332644 52.262146 154

We have checked the coords in HR1172 A1 Tidally locked icy planet which has a Gravity of 1.54
We have tried all possible combinations we could make with 14, 52 and -14, 52 and apparently all combinations are on the light side of the planet

Shout out to CMDR GTR2014 & CMDR ICEFIRE for helping.

This will help considerably thank you... we may have a way to record progress via this tool.

Brilliant tool and collection. Thank you!
+1 over and over again.

HR 1172 A 1 Has gravity of 1.54G. It's metal rich with Iron Magma Volcanism

Edit: GTR 2014 beat me to it :D

A lone NPC Cobra in Merope frameshifted to that system after I dropped in to the WSS he was in and tailed him for a bit. He flew in a straight line and then warped off in that direction. There was no comms chatter.

Can anyone else check if other lone NPCs in WSSs do the same. I'm offline until tomorrow now. Might be a clue.

Think of a simplified model for the freeze-dried fruit in your cereal (well, depending on what you have for breakfast), or freeze dried coffee you might drink:

- Freeze the fruit, thus freezing all the water.
- Place in (partial) vacuum
- Warm slightly
- Water sublimes directly to vapour (gas) from solid (ice)

Thus, at low enough temperatures, regardless of pressure, water will happily exist in solid form. It's when it gets warmed enough at low pressures that it'll turn directly to a gas.

Well I don't know about you guys but I'm going to hang it up for a bit. I skipped around different planets to see if something would catch my eye... nothing... zip

Just docked at Obsidian and I think I'll have a few drinks and get cracking on some overdue paperwork.

I'm going to take a wild stab at this.

Using either HIP 18502 - (has icy moons like the picture) or its neighbor LC-V C2-1

1. Maia
2. Pleione
3. Merope
4. HR 1183
5. Caelano
6. HR 1172
7. Pleiades Sector GW-W C1-15 (famous for the airless water world)
8. HIP 17684
9. Atlas

Not perfect but close. I wanted to use systems that were mainly identifiable in real life so the GW-W system is the stretch here. Everything else more or less fits looking from the vantage point indicated.

Maia and Pleione are NOT in the constellation. The only near system that forms part of it is 3: HR-W D1-42. The other one is 1: 71 PI Tauri.

Sorry to say that but, please, don´t make a wild guess, they don´t really help, although I appreciate the input.

WAYS TO HELP WITH THE CONSTELLATION THEORY:

-Take a photo of the same group of stars from a different system AND IDNTIFY AT LEAST ONE OF THE STARS.
-Identify any non identified star from the constellation.

I don´t mean to be rude, I swear, it's simply that any wild guesses will not help for that.

Can I suggest that anyone with useful tools/docs etc (like Nid's plotly and the system database docs that have been worked on) that we can use to help coordinate this effort get posted to our public page - http://canonn.science/2016/01/07/searching-for-barnacles-in-the-pleiades/ - and then if I get a minute I'll update that page with links etc. Makes sense for that page perhaps to become an index of helpful things :)

All the Canonn councillors can edit this page, and I'm happy to grant edit rights to anyone willing to act as curator of useful things, too :)

Only one person can edit it at a time, though.
