UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

I wish that the 'thing' in the poi was loaded as soon as the blue circle showed on the scanner.

On amother note. My advanced disco scanner and surface scanner did something odd last night.
I was in merope or maia and know I had done a system scan previously as I cashed in the data. I had issues doing a detail scan on I think planet 5 (I couldn't target it at all) so fired off my disco scanner 3 new objects were found but nothing unexplored is showing on my map. Has anyone else has this ?

Aren't comets soft-implemented into the game at the moment? Like you can't actually visit them or see them, but they are actively part of the background calculations for the system, and can sometime be mistakenly picked up by disco-scanners? I've had similar things happen in inhabited space.

I wonder if the Barnacles are meta-alloy mining/production facilities rather than live entities.

They get the metal they need from the ground and additional elements from the nebula. So not alive at all.
Of course that does sever the link to the UA somewhat. That would make them prospectors maybe, that decompose metal in their surroundings on the hunt for suitable locations.
Probably lots of holes in this theory, but worth thinking through.

Just a thought... Do you think that there is a correlation of the minerals / elements one can find in an SRV and on a particular planet and having a higher likelihood of finding a barnacle... is anyone keeping track of what elements are picked up by surface vehicles? That would be a good mission wouldn't it.

Also with the blockade happening and the possibility of people not liking the idea of what the explorers are poking around in, We might have a battle on our hands. The Battle of Maia.

Man, I love this game!

So, does an asp just make this deep pinging sound when hovering at low speeds? I thought I was following something for a while, but now I think my ship is just making me crazy.

yeah, it really does sound like you are hearing something important but it changes pitch with your movement speed at low speeds... so I think it is just part of the sound effects.

Asteroid belts show up in the HUD list as several separate locations, but are only shown as one single entity in the system map. Maybe that's what happened? And Merope has an Asteroid belt.

Barnacles imply oceanic life. They need organics, probably carbon to be contained as well as other life sustaining elements, such as water and oxygen. Also in the game files, barnacles are refered to as baranacle seeds and seem to take on a similar role such as a cargo rack at a crash site, or a material in pre broken form.

I had a similar notion, thinking barnacles are alive, life needs water, etc. I've cruised around on and above many planets/moons that have 'water vapor geysers' and 'water magma' thinking that might be the next best thing to a water world with an atmosphere. Alas, no barnacle sightings... nor have I ever seen any active geysers or evidence of volcanism.

Until we get some more info (actual information, not taunts) I think I've lost hope in ever finding a barnacle.

Quick thought: We have searched the living daylight out of metal worlds and done a moderate amount of searching on rocky worlds (Merope). What about ice worlds? They might be worth a shot.

Barnacles imply oceanic life... They need organics, probably carbon to be contained as well as other life sustaining elements, such as water and oxygen... volatiles as solids within their crust... In planetary science, volatiles are the group of chemical elements and chemical compounds with low boiling points that are associated with a planet's or moon's crust and/or atmosphere... Examples include nitrogen, water, carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen, methane and sulfur dioxide. This pretty much proves that these ice worlds would have the carbon needed for life

Pleiades Sector DL-Y D65 (High Metal and Ice World)
Pleiades Sector HR-W D1-74 (14 Planets, with lots of Ice World Planets)

It seems that these should be the planets we should be searching for barnacles. Definitely seems to fit the criteria.

Odd thoughts about the improbable preponderance of tea to be found in the boonies:
Overplayed Brit joke?
some kind of indicator or spoor of barnacles, something like random clicks and faint ghosts on the wave scanner?
A hint that tea is barnacle-bait, and some should be carried along in lieu of tinfoil and biscuits, which are sadly lacking in the game? (Hint, Hint, Devs)
Placeholder for something Soon?
Coding bug, grabbing the first item it sees instead of randomizing a list?

I feel like if I were CEO of a tea company in ED I could really undercut the competition on price.

"I promise you we don't have to set up our factory on the random moon of a planet 400ly away.. I don't care if that's what the other tea makers do"

yeah space madness is real

Man, Merope A2 is still busy as hell. I just ran into an Asp in the middle of absolute nowhere.

EDIT: AAAAND then I crash.

Also, this marks the 4th CMDR I've run into on 2A today, although the first three were around a more active set of coords.

Just on a hunch, has anyone spent a lot of time searching Pleione 4? It's the only landable ringed planet in the nebula (or at least, near it) and has 1.86 Gravity, and a LOT of mysterious green patches on it you can see from Orbit. Spent a little time on it myself and found a lot of wrecks, maybe worth a closer look?

I spent a couple of hours there tonight in a section with a lot of large craters, a lot of green patches and a number of shallow crevasses... It's an impressive planet... towards the end of the night all I was finding were those ridiculously large double buildings with tea canisters... ugh :/

i have done two 2-hour sessions on p4

I spent 16 hours exploring there, mostly in those green patches, but didn't find anything Barnacle related.
Still, looks the most promising to me.

Okay, I don't know if its just me, but I'm pretty sure something is up with POIs for me. I've seen dozens of them on my searches tonight, but the contents only ever actually show up like 1/4 of the time. I can go over a POI area over and over and I will not find anything, no signal that could be it, nothing. I can't see anything from above in my ship either. In fact, one time earlier I flew over the same spot like 4 times, and on the FIFTH TIME a HUGE DAMN OUTPOST just pops up out of nowhere. I specifically flew over that EXACT SPOT multiple times.

Not to mention, I've also started to get a few crashes as well.
