Worth buying now?

Yes you are right the upgrade is less than I thought.
Still a little bit out of my price range though :(

Thankfully, Minecraft has been very good to me these last few years, and I've only recently got bored of it.

Not bad for a game I plopped down $20 on during their beta.

Because of that, I've got a quite bit of money in my gaming fund. Of course, I just spent half a year's worth of my gaming budget on upgrading to Alpha, but then all the games I haven't played in the meantime are available at great discounts.

just out of curiosity - expansion packs pass talks about all Major expansions and whatnot. Will there be minor expansions too that have to be paid for that are not covered?

So planetary landings = major / new ships skins = minor and requires more cash (purely for an example I just made up)

I think that is implied, yes. At least that is what I inferred. Expecting many 'optional' micro transactions.

This is a very important question, and one I wondered about on these forums when the online store opened.

To expand, there is a semantic difference between the expansion pass on the online store and the expansion perk offered during the Kickstarter. The Kickstarter text says:

"Digital Download Pack. This includes a single digital download of the game, ANY expansions and 500 credits when starting a new game."

and the store says:

"The Expansion Pass includes automatic access to all MAJOR Elite: Dangerous expansion packs."

In both cases the emphasis is mine. Is 'major' vs. 'any' a genuine distinction between the two, or just an irrelevant difference in wording? If we've learned one thing in the past few days, it's that when we just have a few sentences of text to rely on, what people think they are getting from their pledge and what they will actually get can be very different.

So the answer is we don't know. There is certainly enough wiggle room for Frontier to fulfill the letter of their commitment rather than the spirit, if they so choose. Make your guess based on your own assessment of their performance to date.

Well I cant see them refusing to give minor packs away free to those with a Pass if they are including the major ones.

Not that I would pay for a skin anyway. I pay for very little in terms of DLC for my games, and only for the games I really like a lot. This one - still not sure yet, its completely different from Frontier and FFE so it is still an unknown entity for me.

I can totally understand why the original question was posted. Having played Elite on the BBC Micro in the 80's, it took precisely half a heartbeat to reach for my debit card. But if I were younger, and had never experienced the concept of Elite then I'm sure I'd want questions answered before I paid out full price on a game.

Having said that, after watching umpteen alpha videos on youtube, I am now dying to get behind the controls. It look fantastic and the Frontier team look to be doing a superb job.

As for the expansion issue, I expect to get what I paid for in the Kickstarter, ie ANY expansion. After all, we were putting our faith into something that didn't actually exist, and which Frontier had raised and dashed hopes about over the years.

Quite.

Up until a few days ago, I would have agreed agreed with you. However, it now seems that pledge level wording appears entirely subject to interpretation.

A week ago, everyone expected that those who had paid for premium beta would be part of the first group to get their hands on any beta build. Those expectations were wrong, and people are now falling over each other to re-interpret the wording of that particular pledge level.

I really hope your expectation turns out to be correct!

They are participating in the early rounds of the beta phase, which is what the reward is. Normal beta backers have to wait until the later stages.

Im looking to buy the game for 50 bucks (not the alpha access, just the regular game).

Is there any good reason to purchase it now, rather than wait until it comes out?

Like, will the price go up?

Thanks

To me the answer was simple I would have paid $1000 USD with no problem .
If I had heard of the kickstarter in time .
Im in the UK and would have paid up to £1000 UK so its a no brainer .
The best deal now if you love and want Elite Dangerous is to buy the Premium BETA , though if I heard of it right now I would buy the ALFA even if it had only one week left . Because I would want to support the game and the company writing it . So if you really want to buy the game spend as much as you can afford and make sure you get the expansion pass at the same time .

I completely agree that the arrangement as put forward this week entirely fulfills the commitment of 'participation in the beta phase'. But what I am saying is that prior to this week, I didn't see a single person predict that the commitment would be fulfilled in this way. So expectations of what a pledge entitles us to, even an expectation that is shared by virtually the entire community, can be wrong.

To give a silly and extreme example, if an announcement was made that premium betas would only be allowed in for the last 24 hours of a six-month long premium beta process, that would also fulfill the commitment of 'participation in the beta phase' to a lawyer's satisfaction. (I know of course that things won't go down this way!).

Financial commitment at the very start of this process , before anything was delivered, was a complete leap of faith. Now deliverables are being delivered, then anyone who is considering making a pre-order have some information with which to inform a judgement call as to whether their expectations will be realized. The alpha release, for example, justifies a lot of the faith in Frontier, as it was delivered on time, in excellent shape and fulfilled pretty much all that was expected of it. Whether the same can be said of the beta, after this week's revelations, has been a topic of lively debate.

I've loved playing the Alpha. Its been an awesome experience and one cool part has been playing with the other backers and hassling the developers. Rose tinted glasses perhaps but on the whole the community here is wonderful.. We all sort of know each other which is a rare kind of dynamic when it comes to online gaming.

But I grew up on the original Elite and have been waiting for this game for a seriously long time. I'm the first to give Frontier a hard time when I think they are doing something wrong but despite initial teething troubles they have done a wonderful job of communicating and engaging with us all. It might sound trite but I feel like I am a part of something special.

It all depends what the value proposition is for you. There is no harm in waiting for the released game if that suits you better. That expansion pack is good value imo. Buy the alpha or beta and come and join the fun. ;)

I would buy what you can afford. If you think you would like the game (loads of vids out there - even though it's not close to full game) consider adding the expansion pass (I doubt you'll see it as inexpensive on a ala carte basis later).

So the alpha backers get first access, premium beta backers get access to the ever so slightly later stage. Standard beta backers get the little bit later later stage. And the rest of us will have to wait for the slightly more later later later stage. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

And I like it because by the time I get the game everyone else will be fed up with it and I will become the Emperor :D
