In game GalNet reporting that Meta Alloys have helped out at Obsidian Orbital!!

Not on community site yet though.

nice looks like all those scientist waiting for palins base have been keeping busy! :D
80 tonnes on route to Bond Hub in Varati

Yes, I meant to ask this too.

Also, carrying a UA with meta alloys in the hold with it - do the ship modules still suffer degradation?

I could be wrong, but I do recall someone reporting that there was no change in ship/module degradation with a MA on board with a UA.

Beyond the Barnacle

First of all:
Congratulations and some tea and biscuits to everyone that took part in the hunt for the barnacle.
It was a very nice sight to see all those CMDRs hovering around.
And a special thank you for Riz for managing the Megathread very well.
There may be an extra biscuit and some rum for his tea tonight :)

So we found some barnacles. We know they are a good thing for getting materials. But what's beyond that?

What do we know? Answer: Almost nothing.

Do we know their agenda?
Them being just mining outposts does not make any sense, even from
the most alien point of view. If you mine there must be someone who consumes the ressources.
And if you mine you want to protect these ressources and don't ignore every Bob and his uncle
who takes your most valuable ressources and destroys your mining facility.
Just try to get some diamonds from a De Beers' mine and smash their equipment on your way out…

That leads to another conclusion:
Do they terraform (or thargoform?) the planets and the accumulation of minerals is just a side effect?
That would explain why the the destruction of the spikes does not seem to bother.

Where do they live?
Well, up to today we have findings on three planetes and two systems. Are they restricted to
these two systems? And if they currently do, does it stay this way?

Where do they come from?
Of course their markings may give a hint. But before starting wild expeditions to Barnard's Loop
or any resembling nebula, we need to understand the other facts.

TL;DR

What do we need to do?
- Watch the known barnacles closely. Do they change any planetary parameters, e.g. do the
start to form an atmosphere?
- Watch the systems they are found in. Can we observe anything unusual e.g. unidentified
objects in Strong Signal Sources?
- Search for other Barnacle sites. Do they form a shell, too? Do the spread within the
- How do the relate to UAs? Are there similarities in markings, sound or behaviour?
- Brace for impact for the things to follow the Barnacle…

What we should not do
- Act openly aggressive. Watch but don't shoot. We know what we need to know for the moment.
- Rush into any nebula we can find.

I have gotten Arsenic and Germanium from the organic spikes in Merope

Just trying myself and definately getting a lot of Germanium (Going to be able to do a lot of +25% Jumps in my near future), also Mercury and Yttrium. Wishing I could hold more than 300 materials now!

According to Galnet, reports coming from Obsidian Orbital in Maia are saying that using the meta-alloy might help to fix the station.
So I went to 64 Arietis to sell some to the local disabled space station.
Sadly it is still not possible to sell them metal-alloy, there is no commodity market available.
I also noticed that the local planetary outpost, Boulle Landing, does not buy meta-Alloy (Commodity market is available).

As my last thoughts had no interest, I'll pose this one for you instead (slightly similar to the last few posts).

Why would the Meta-Alloys "cure" the stations?

We know that they are both produced from the same thing, the UA from the barnacle and the MA from the 'tendrils' and so it seems odd that one would be a cure for the other.

Could it be that the barnacle produces the MA as a by-product while it is growing the UA and then jettisons that when it's ready. Or maybe the MA are the "fuel" needed to propel the UAs into space.

By selling them at stations are you merely filling the station with fuel for all the UAs already there? Or perhaps it will make the process happen in reverse...

Here is my theory (sorry if ninja'd)
I still think the barnacles are able to launch UA's. The structure looks like it can be opened and launch something. so we should observe them more. But what I mainly think the structure is used for is for mining. The Barnacle itself is a mining station. That explains why it makes rumble sounds because it is actually digging in the ground. The spikes are used only for alloy production which would probably take a really long time. That explains why there are so many spikes. When an alloy is ready it goes in the Barnacle and it gets ready for launch to the mothership. I think the UA's are used for locating systems for to scan the body if it has the materials for alloy production.

What do you think?

certainly doesn't seem crazy to me!

Also all the assassinate thing with the related mission is wierd. May it be the Alliance ? Federation ( do not remember witch one made Palin research stop ) trying to silence us?

Hmm but to have a chance to "see the sun" in a zenith like on the vids a barnacle has to be within a certain
zone of latitude right, depending on the tilt of the body the are on righto?

Checking the first post, most barnies are within the 20ish latitude
with one exception.

Again, a bit more complicated - it depends on the axial tilt of the planetary body, it's orbital inclination with regard to its parent body, and so on.
I also thought the first 5C barnacle was pointing directly at Merope, looked again 5 minutes later and it wasn't.

we have all seen ghostbusters! gate keeper, key master. Meta alloys may have "fixed" them at the moment, but if i was trying to get 2 things brought together that should'nt be,id do it this way. i suggest leaving one station infected as a control. when is Gozer going to turn up my betting soon.

We know that they are both produced from the same thing, the UA from the barnacle...

We do not know that.

Thus far the only tenuous connections between the two are:

The UA's point in the general direction of SOME known Barnacle/MA sites.
The markings are vaguely similar.
The sounds are vaguely similar.

There is no hard evidence of link. There is circumstantial evidence the two are related.

I've had Antimony from one. Unknown if they only drop the materials the planet has or random ones.

I've mentioned earlier in the thread that it definitely appears that the rare materials dropped from the barnacles vary between the site, and the planet.

The first site on Merope 5C would regularly spawn Mercury, Tungsten, and something else. The second planet in the Pleiades Sector regularly spawns Yttrium, Niobium, Antimony, and something else, depending on the site coordinates.

I see everyone has been busy! :D I just dropped off 72 myself
