UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

Well, time for another crazy theory ;)

The barnacles are some type of serious space plague. They settle down on planets, spreading there until the planet is totally destroyed / useless, then move on to the next.
The Thargoids know about them, because the barnacles have already destroyed a large portion of their home galaxy (which is LMC if i recall correctly?).
Now the barnacles have come to our galaxy and beginning to infect us.
The UAs are actually from the Thargoids, trying to help us. They set up the shell to contain the barnacles inside so that they can no longer spread.
This will finaly lead to an alliance with the Thargoids to perform a massiv war against the barnacles!

No matter what, there will be war in the end...

I'd just like to bump this in case it gets lost.

At the weekend I went down to the site publicised in the newsletter for my first look. Unsurprisingly I got fragged by some total haemorrhoid and his mate. Anyway, I crept back down there this morning and managed to take a quick peak while it was quiet. Now, the thing is, I had the co-ordinates and was basically in the right place to start with but even then ... I didn't see an obvious blue POI marking the site, didn't manage to spot the barnacle from a quick flyby, and once I'd landed and deployed my SRV, didn't see the loud scanner signal I'd expected. In fact, I had to carefully drive to pretty much the exact co-ordinates given (at least down to 2nd decimal place), and even then the scanner signal was VERY weak.

So, as the above says, anyone got any tips on how to find new barnacle sites?

Check out http://www.wavescanner.net/. Now includes barnacles!

Unfortunately, there isn't a guide, being our data too few and sometimes conflicting.

Anyway, I've further updated the BARNACLE FACTS section of the FP, with what we know so far.

anyone got a video of the glowing barnacle when the middle is repeatedly shot with a beam laser? I'm skeptical, someone mentioned that this could be simply "lit up" by the light emitted from the laser itself... hard to form an opinion from a single image and some text.

Someone has already posted (can't seem to find the post with pics) that he fired his laser into the centre of the Barnacle and the Branacle opened like a flower with six petals for a few seconds, then closed again. This leads me to think that these Barnacles are not hostile, as opposed to UAs which corrode ships' modules.
The other point is whether something could be placed inside the Barnacle during the time it is opened.

what? if that's true then I completely missed that. I think you're pulling my leg. It's not nice to spread rumors!

this picture from RonkerZ shows it glowing, not opening... if that's what you're referring to.

please please PLEASE find the post you're talking about. If true, then that's huge. But I suspect you maybe skimmed Lord Zoltan's or RonkerZ's post too fast, and mis-interpreted.

Hmm we'll need 100% confirmation/proof that it opens up first ;)

Cus I don't recall anyone saying that aha

That could be. But I was expecting something interesting then, putting an UA in front of a Barnacle... and that's not the case so far...

Sorry but:

  • the Low Purrs are IDENTICAL to a free floater.
  • The blue fireflies effect is almost the same.
  • The green cloud/smoke is very similar.
  • The green markings on the central structure have similarities with the mayan like markings on the UA pods.

I tend to think there are too many coincidences here...

But it's like saying - Well here's a Tractor and here's an Oil Pump, they've got to be connected because they both use a motor and exhale Carbon Dioxide, and you find them close to each other... Where's the refinery, and who is running them?

While running goods around in systems that had me facing Barnards Loop I can also see the similarity with the barnacle symbol. Unfortunately the galaxy map stops showing them after a certain distance, but there are three other nebulae that could be used to make the two circle sections in the symbol, kind-of like a nebula version of a constellation seen from earth, but in this case seen from the symbol-maker's home system.

just another 2 cent from me :)

In fact they are both made by humans ;)

Remember we are playing a game, and that the game (FD) is playing with us as well. :D

Well there are two options.

It is either:

1. How the Nebula(e) are viewed in the night sky of their home world.
2. How their home systems look like to other people.

We know for a (MB) fact that Barnacles only occur in or around Nebulae. That give No2 more credence. Of course, there could be a nebula (like Witch Head) where if you lived there, Barnard's Loop would be the prominent feature in the sky. So it could still be 1...

Well, what you're saying has never happened: someone just shot a Barnacle with Beams (as hundred have done already), and it just lighted up, as any other thing you shot with Beams does.

Be careful in spreading misinformation in a thread like this. ;)

^ This.

You are saving me from a lot of writing Riz. Thank you :)

Well here's a crazy idea. Remember the first impression of the Orca showed the ship in an underwater situation? And now we have 'Barnacles' ??? hmmm? Well? And the UAs sound like whales?

Star Trek IV the Voyage Home. Spock asked Uhura to adjust the frequency for listening to the sound under salt water... Has anyone tried filtering the sounds we are hearing for underwater in the same way?

TMHBABICKUWTLT: (This May Have Been Asked But I Can't Keep Up With The Latest Threadnaught)

Have we given any thought to what the marking on the barnacles is? I don't mean what it represents, but the mark itself.

Is it a birthmark? If so it's unlikely to be of much consequence, bar some zany genetic splicing!
Is it a tattoo? The barnacles don't seem to have any opposable thumbs, which would seem to rule out this being any kind of mark this species applies to itself. Who knows what they have in/under there though...
Is it a brand? Has someone been 'claiming' these barnacles as their property? Harvesting the meta-alloys they produce perhaps? Have we stepped on someone's toes? Do aliens have toes?

I don't believe the barnacles are going to do anything beyond what we've seen, the next clue is either in the sound and/or the symbol. The symbol might have nothing to do with a nebula, maybe it's a letter in a language related to something we haven't found yet. Everyone is to focused on this map/nebula idea we might be ignoring something right in front of our eyes. Have to keep thinking beyond the scope of our first idea.
