UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

Hi folks

I found an unusual plateau on a planet in the system I've been searching. But I'm not sure if the plateau itself is a glitch, or if the edges of it just weren't rendered right for whatever reason. But I've never seen a plateau this high (~4KM) and well-defined in a crater before. It's kind of hard to explain, so I threw together a video of it. Any of you seen anything like this before? Is the plateau a glitch? If not, how would such a land formation be possible inside the crater of an airless, waterless moon?

Anyways, I'm going to go back and look it over real good one more time. I doubt barnacles are involved, as the planet just doesn't seem to fit the bill. It's just so weird I can't help myself :D

Bug it with FDev. Looks like a glitch.

Commanders, there are again reports that the Smiling Dog Crew is back in Maia and Merope destroying defenseless explorers and researchers. Extreme caution is recommended.

Yeah they got the first discoverer of the Barnacle - thus making enemies of the Black Birds Squadron... Not going to end well.

Spotting Barnacles

I thought I'd try to help show people what they are looking for. The barnacles are not easy to spot!

Dark Side.

Sparkles a little more than it looks in the picture so not quite that hard to spot, but still not easy!

After changing modes (leaving ship sat landed on the planet) This is how it ended up (parked 22km up)

I must say first time round I didnt even notice the barnacle site bottom right!!

Above 4km (approx 4.2km) the site vanished from my vision. They do twinkle somewhat if sweeping across them or while moving making them noticable against the background. They really look more like a hot pixel than anything else.

Best Ship for Barnacle Searching? Well the Orca actually....

Ok so getting to the planet will take you 1/3 longer BUT...

1). It travels at 343 m/s (100 m/s faster than an asp and nearly double an anaconda) so you can cover much more distance over the ground in the same time.
2). It handles very well even under gravity.
3). When you open debug camera... it opens BELOW the ship. So you can open it and immediately be looking for barnacles
4). If you find any aliens you can ram them and pretend it was an accident.

Reminds me of the famous "monolith" on Altais B2:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=210685

Was found in Beta, but still exists. I went to visit this not long after Horizons went live and drove my SRV off it.... it is possible to survive that fall with use of the thrusters btw (if you have at least 60% health to begin with):D

Another point in favor of the UA being the Cause of the Stations shutdowns:
Robigo was targeted intentionally...

https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDange...ollobrains_and_his_associates_are_destroying/

@Jmanis:
I'm starting to think it's not only the number of UAs you sell: the number of people doing it could have a real meaning to FD, to choose stations to shut down...

with the BGS the more people working together in a system the higher the effect each individual has, it could be the same with UA selling

Errrr. Got any evidence of that? I'm on my phone which isn't great for searching, but I'm certain that A)more players don't mean an increase in efficiency in the bgs effects players undertake, and B) the effects of influence changing activities on a system actually decrease in effectiveness as more are done, as a function of the population of a system. Ive never heard of the mechanic you mention being the case.

@riz: i sincerely hope and doubt that is the mechanic. But if it is, I'll just make sure I'm on record now as saying it's the stupidest mechanic I've heard of.

Here you go, I think I've understood this correctly?
There is a cap on the amount a Faction can change in influence per day, which is determined by: the size of population (the bigger the harder), the faction state, the amount of player activity that day, and any Power influence on that system. Influence is calculated on an approximately daily tick.

That's a pretty obtuse interpretation, but that's just my opinion. I read that as amount of player activity as just that. How many missions have been done, profits made, bounties claimed etc. It says nothing about number of players.

Edit: also never heard of that being an observed effect in the bgs thread or mercs of mikunn thread

I've been half-heartedly following all this since the UAs started appearing, but haven't been involved in the science and speculation. Still, I've popped along to a Barnacle for a look, and the first thing I thought was, "Hey, they look like they could open up (think Alien egg). Oooh, what if they do that and launch UA's into space periodically".

So there you go. Wild speculation after 5 massive threads. I'll go back to my rock now.

A nice view of the LMC from where I'm currently barnacle searching

I'm on the edge of this nebula and today will be surveying a few choice planets here.

Then I'll be moving onto one of the many nebulae in this neck of the woods.

11k Ly from Sol and barely started. This may take some time.

you could be right, unfortunately a lot of the BGS is open to interpretation! ;)
seems a bit silly to me if a cmdr traveling through your system without doing anything has an effect on how much influence you can change
A controlled test can be carried out in an unused system, that's if the BGS doesn't play up!

I've gone back to the 20x recording of the barnacle for a bit, and had a thought.
Has anyone checked if we can "morse-code" the beeps?
I'm at work so can't check it out properly, but when I tried, I noticed some gaps where beeps arent present/audible, wrote it down and through a morse to text got:
. -.--.-.-. -. ..- .--..-.-. ..-.-.-.
E#NU##
something is't right, but is it worth pursuing further?

i tried the same
the problem is that the message seems to be endless no loop found yet.
have a look at http://www.dcode.fr/morse-code which can try to decode without seperators. BUT no prosigns

someone found
Barnacle 2 (Merope 5 C) 01010011011111
Barnacle 4 (Pleiades Sector JC-U b3-2 1) 1010110011001011101000101010100
Barnacle 5 (Pleiades Sector JC-U b3-2 1) 1111010010101010101101010010011110110000110101000
written down as 0 and 1s

i started with decoding this but this is not the complete transmission it is just this long because of the video length!
i found morse code prosign in it and so on.
have a look:
01010011011111 = -.-.- - .. - .. ... == ATTENTION Titis
1010110011001011101000101010100 = . -. -..- - . .- - .-. .. - . --- .-. -. -.-- == enxteatriteorny
1111010010101010101101010010011110110000110101000 = ... . -. - -.- .-. -.-. -. . - .-. -- .- - ....- ..--- - . .-. - . --- == sentkrcnetrmat42terteo

if you investigate further i recommend to get a message which is repeatedly broadcasted. search for prosigns for END and BEGIN of transfer. for example you can find prosign ...-.- End of contact directly followed by prosign -.-.- Attention in message 3 ....-.--.-.-.-.-.-..-.-.--.--....-..----..-.-.---

it's cool yes.. but you can find everything in it.

on the other hand i found this link: http://wa6pzb.blogspot.de/2014/09/arduino-morse-code-decoder.html
it' Barnacle Budd's Morce Code Decoder .. ??? what the ...???

these riddles make me crazy. i love 'em.

good luck!

Using that tool, there are two words that might be in there that caught my eye (still the 20x recording):
.- [.--.-.-.-...-.--.] .-.-...-.-.-. [warning]
.-. [--.-.-.-..] .-.--..-.-...-.-.-. [metal]

but those leave the rest without meaning... I need a longer recording. :p
