UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

We dont even know if the piece of the puzzle is actually in the game yet or if it's waiting for patch 2.1 or some background switch to be thrown to be in the game at a point determined by frontier. I know some people like to think that the looking is part of the game (even if there's nothing to look for). Me personally... I'd like to know if there's something to look for other than more identical barnacles that do nothing. The longer it goes on that nobody says that there's something to look for.. the more it makes me think that it's not in the game yet

This all reminds me of the situation with the original UA's and the attempts to decode their sounds following Michael's "have you tried listening to them" comment.

At the time I posted a poll ...

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=143103

The result was pretty much a 50/50 split on whether people wanted FD to tell us what the deal was. I'm guessing that won't have changed much. Some people will want to know more while others won't.

Me? I've changed my position somewhat since that original post and think FD's silence and the ongoing mystery until the next big reveal (whether injected by FD or discovered by the community) is OK.

I don't agree with saying there's nothing to lose by saying 'yes there's more to look for' All it does is encourage more people to ask for more hints all the time.

Not the same thing. I'm not asking for a hint. I'm asking for confirmation that they actually coded the next part and that we have something to look for.

From my perspective I want things to be discovered rather than announced. That can't always be avoided - especially with people nosing through game files! Sometimes a nudge is needed to move things along, but I'd like to keep that to a minimum.

For a week plus now I have been searching the "qualifying" planets within the N. American and other regional nebulae without finding anything other than a lot of wrecked SRV's and data points.
Has anyone found a barnacle outside of the Pleiades? Anyone else out here?
I'm not complaining as I love it out there and the views are magnificent, but other than that there isn't much point to it if there are not any barnacles or large wrecks to be found.

Bravo Sir

OK what the heck is going on with Palin? You slag him off and then he pops up on Galnet. https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/56a0efd59657ba7d3461ba05 and in it he asks for the Meta-Alloys to be delivered to his "new research base at Obsidian Orbital"

So it appears I wasted all that time over Christmas as he can't even be bothered to build the damn research outpost.

Seems a bit rash to start a Meta-Alloy CG when the spawning mechanism is buggy.
Not to mention how flaky Palin is when it comes to fulfilling the purpose of the CG.

Hi Michael, that's good to hear that you want things discovered.

I myself am a little reluctant to go searching again for new things that may get hinted at after the issues (bugs) discovered with Barnacles.
Is it possible to thoroughly test the next 'thing' to ensure that there are no bugs or issues that may lead to people missing 'things' due to a bug?

We test as far as we can and didn't see those issues here - unfortunately some issues only come to light in the wild.

I'd agree with that if we knew that there was stuff to be discovered and that it will actually show up. Having stuff not spawn half the time (ie barnacles not spawning in solo) is half the problem. The other half is that sometimes it's hard to believe that it's not all empty space and your just saying go look for something just to keep us busy while you make stuff to put in it.

I think that is exactly the sort of thing that would encourage people to ask for more hints.

We'll just keep telling those looking through the game files to stop it! :D I think that you are correct and your intervention/help so far over the whole UA/Barnacle saga has been good and well timed.

If things do have to be announced rather than discovered, could they not be announced in-game? Maybe create an in-game alter-ego.. and announce them via Galnet.

"Cmdr Baker Molochise states that while on a drinking trip to the Pleiades, he swore he saw..." (Actually, what's up with the anagrams to your name? Eskimo Bachelor? Bearlike Smooch? Are you a real person? :) )

Go look
For what?
Can't tell you
Where?
In space
We can't find it
It's there
Well it's buggy af
Oh we didn't know, but don't look at game files
Hide the files better
I want you to discover things
What things
Can't tell you
Where are the things
In space
Space is huge
Have fun!
Are the things actually there this time
Can't tell you

Lol I'll just eat popcorn and play rust for now

Michael:

Have you considered some sort of signal to indicate that there is something else to be discovered?
I think this community could benefit from a simple confirmation that there is more to the UA story - or any story that warrants our efforts, rather than wonder if our time is being wasted.

An example:

You have a stickied post which you update:

Unknown Discoveries (Total Easter Eggs): Yes
Antares Story: No
UA story: Yes
Barnacles/Metal Alloys: No

etc...

You have a stickied post:

Unknown Discoveries: Yes (Or you could provide a numerical value)

Would be nice to know that we aren't wasting our time with these things :D

So, taking meta-alloys to Obsidian Orbital is now a community goal?

Yes, it's a CG.

Plz, fix Robigo first.. :p

IMHO, it is not possible to do that right now. Obsidian Orbital has been likely a unique case, needed to bring the story forward, so that now we can have the CG and Palin to research the Barnacles.
What will come next, is probably a Palin's breakthrough about the Barnacles, and a new huge CG next, to heal all the stations once and for all.

Just thought people might like to know that Obsidian orbital and meta alloys is now a CG
