Names could only be reserved through the Kickstarter/Backer's App backing process. I think anyone who joined afterwards through the web store just gets assigned a generic name with a number for now. Though in the single player scenario that does not even matter yet, so I suppose when beta starts you will be able to use a proper commander name, just cannot keep it reserved for you for the game proper (gamma and beyond).

You won't be able to set commander's name yet, as you will play single player atm.
