Distant Worlds - A journey beyond the Abyss

Had an unfortunate situation last night. But also fortunate, because I forgot to start recording beforehand, so I'm not obligated to show you guys.

Had my USB hub crap out while I was flying to land on a moon. Got it plugged in to a working port a few seconds too late, pulled up in time to save the ship, but not in time to save the 21% hull damage I took. No matter, I'm pressing on. Too stubborn to turn back now.

Also, I'm number 186 on the roster, but didn't sign up for a private group. Open Play is fine, but it's getting a tad lonely; any way I can get into one of the private groups? On US time.
I would go on. From now on even if i have Hull compromised I will drag the whale as far as it can go with sparkles and smoke from the bridge. BTW I've already lost the possibility to win the 100% hull prize. I've done it 11,000 times. Then I fuel scooped under the yellow line. E-drop. Gained distance from star. Hull at 98%. Repair thrusters while in SC at full throttle. Hull at 93%. It was Expedition day 2. My hardware problems are in the brain, yours in the USB port.

Keep going shab00ka, I'm subscribed to your video series and want to know how it ends! And this is too soon :)

Plus, there's a prize for the ship that reaches Beagle Point with the lowest amount of hull remaining. ;)

I will not be attempting to win that prize hahah.
79% isn't too bad, just frustrating. I will keep going and just avoid glaring at my hull %

you should sendt a support ticket to the company that build your ship. About the faulty wiring of the throttle and stick of your ship.. XD
(PS can I assume you just have keyboards as in my case with a HOTAS I'd still have the keyboard controlles for emergency)

I have a HOTAS, and I didn't even think about using the keyboard. Not that I know what the ship control keybinds are, but in my panic I didn't even think about it.
Good to know in case something like this happens again, thanks CMDR!

Just a heads up on deep exploration using Jumponium.
If you don't already please make sure to log the systems you jump into, it's not always easy to locate the stars using the galaxy map and by logging your jumps you will save yourself a lot of trouble. Trust me I know!
My Jumponium has taken a massive battering climbing to the roof of the galaxy. I did discover a nice Ammonia world for my troubles...

I found my largest landable object yet, a huge lump of ice at 13 earth masses and about 1G. Naturally it deserved a visit.
My landings at the previous low-G waypoints have obviously dulled my capacyty to land & I left the planet with 20% less hull. :/
I guess it's time to develop a serious paranoia in order to survive the rest of the trip.

Hello. I'm from the unofficial Galnet News project on YouTube. You have hopefully heard of us by now and what we do! :)

Since there's 319 pages of forum posts here and other social media posts all over the place, we have a bit of a hard time reading everything since we don't have anyone on the actual expedition unfortunately.

We're looking for someone who would like to act as an embedded "reporter" for us, who can feed us a weekly update on how the expedition is progressing, what sights have been encountered, and any notable events that the galaxy as a whole might like to hear about. It would be about 5-10 paragraphs of text, and links to social media like images and video, each Thursday for the duration of the expedition. It doesn't have to be written in journalistic style because we have the ability to do this, and we will credit your CMDR name on screen in the videos for all your reporting efforts.

We are not affiliated with Frontier in any way and this will not automatically get you publication in the official Galnet feed, but they have been known to take player stories and publish them, so it's not impossible, just not within our control.

If anyone is planning to do the full journey and would like to take this on, please do send a private message and we will work something out. Thanks in advance for your help on this!

Great idea - I hope you find someone to volunteer!

Ah thats just horrible, with hardware malfunction its not your own piloting that put you down just bad luck! Good it was not worse and will see you at Beagle point:)

Haha, gosh I use a wireless XBOX360 controller. When exiting hyperspace into a giant star (my luck) the battery ran out and went straight in to the star and kept going while I struggled which keys on the keyboard would navigate my ship out. Then I replaced the battery with the ones in the TV remote control (screw the family TV, they can use the digital buttons on the TV itself if they want to change channels/volume lol).

But that's not the end..

Hull at 98%. Repair thrusters while in SC at full throttle.

I decided to repair the modules one by one to get them to 100% again. I thought I shouldn't touch the FSD during repairs. I repaired shields, canopy, fuel scoop. Then.. there shouldn't be any problems repairing thrusters right? WRONG. Boom hull at 90%.

That's when I went back to the bubble. Decided to pick up Horizons then too and have a couple of landings and play with SRV before heading back out. Still not very confident, but have been having fun with the SRV on the way back to catch up with the Expedition.

I have been very-very careful flying back towards WP5.. logged off with hull at 100% last night with this view:

~

Then today logged in with 99% hull damage, I don't know why =(

I had that happen to me. Logged out on a planet with hull at 100%, logged back in and it was at 99%. I'd recommend logging out in orbit.

Before starting this trip I wasn't even planning to take an SRV because of the risks involved with landing. I'm glad I did though, for the social side of messing around at waypoints of what would otherwise be a jumping grindfest. Still, it seems my original analysis might not be far off. If you want to reduce risk, stay off planet surfaces. Even after these meet ups, I would park in space, not on the surface. Just in case. Apart from the odd flying-into-a-star incident there isn't much to go wrong in space.

I didn't catch who it was, but someone had a bad run in their SRV at waypoint 4...

I think you could understand why i decided to skip the landing on this one

Do ships take damage if attacked when landed while you're out in the SRV? I've been wondering what the best method is for coping with an attack at a rendezvous point; if you dismiss your ship, can it be destroyed during its ascent before it jumps to supercruise and out of harm? I'm guessing the answers are "yes" and "yes", but you never know... if the ship is vulnerable, I suppose you should dash to it, board and attempt to evade or fight, if not then if you run in the SRV the worst you can suffer is losing the SRV.
