What does rep actually do?

It makes you feel super important and will eventually fix all known problems in the universe.
By giving more Rep to everyone here, our group of brave Cmdr's will finally be able so solve everything, and all will be super duper shiny. .......n' stuff.

The planet is Arrakis, also known as Dune.
