XBOX to become more "PC-like"

Interesting article, though I have to admit after the first 5 or so paragraphs I skimmed it so I'll have to ask you OP.

With regards to Xbox becoming upgradable, are we going to see a gap form between players who are wealthier and games become inaccessible to players who only have the base form of Xbox?

From what I guess, this will be no different than the current PC gaming market. As better hardware comes out, game developers produce games that utilise that hardware. Developers and hardware makers have always been in a weird symbiotic game of cat and mouse. I cant see how this is any different from current status where those who own Xbox 360's don't get get access to new games.

Very nice read, thank you. Exciting stuff in my opinion. I would also like to know if this would lead to cross platform play in our galaxy and would it lead to Hotas. Best news from Xbox in awhile.

[Insert PC master race meme here]
I hope it would allow instancing together, it would mean I have a chance of meeting Bongo (and Error) :p

It will probably lead to an Xbox PC with set specs & upgrade options specified by Microsoft that would have to be installed at point of buying or by a Microsoft technician at an authorised Xbox retail / repair outfit...

I'm actually quite surprised they haven't done it already.

Honestly this thread worries me. The main reason I don't game on pcs is because of the constant demand to upgrade before you can play.
This is something I can see getting out of hand in the not too distant future, I hope I'm wrong.

Dusty and I had a conversation on Twitter about this.

Long story short: This all would feel a lot less like a marketing ploy had XB1 not started this console generation already behind the ball on their tech.

The 360 lasted 8 years. Phil is predicting this cycle to last 7 WITHOUT hardware upgrades but I think most people (including him) realize that is optimistic. MS has to do something to keep XB1 relevant for at least another 4yrs and hardware upgrades is the only way they can do that.

Had they NOT been behind AT launch this wouldn't be an issue for them.

I actually welcome à la carte upgrades for my XB1

Well, that's worrying for me. I can't afford an expensive gaming PC nor can I afford the constant upgrades that new games demand upon release. That's why I went with a one-time investment (excluding games and content, of course) of a console. Really not sure how I feel about this. On one hand I am excited that there's a possibility for Cross-platform play, maybe even support for PC exclusive games on the Xbone (unlikely but hey, a man can dream) possible VR support (finally, I wanna use a rift with Elite!) 60 ps, etc. On the other hand all I see are $$$$$$ flying past my eyeballs for only possibilities, not promises.

I'll be getting a PS5. I don't want another PC.

I would agree with this if my PS4 hadn't become a dust collector, apart from the odd exclusive I find the system very sterile .
I can't see the one getting upgrades it would confuse the general public too much, maybe the next xbox .

This is smart. Who needs XBOX 2, 3, 4, 5 etc etc. If you want a latest game that's requires boosted specs in 2-3 ... 5-7 years time ... instead of buying a whole new unit, get a few parts... likely be cheaper too and/or xbox certified.

Face it we all have been buying the newest console, instead of that, get a few parts.

My experience is Sony locks their hardware down like it's no one's business. I bought it and want to do any mods I want if I choose, I like Microsoft supports that. Sony, I can't trust them with anything, how many times has their live service been hacked? Too many. I'll never go PS ever.

Pc is basically like this, but both Xbox and Playstation are fairly locked down, and they will both likely continue to be that to work against piracy, but yeah if you only could by upgrades that's branded by sony/microsoft, then yeah pricing is probably not going to be enjoyable.

I simply see this as an admission that current-gen consoles are woefully underpowered. Expecting them to be relevant for the same length of time as last-gen is overly-optimistic.

Between the XB1 and PS4, microsofts UI offering has gotten slower and more frustrating to use than it began. Sony has made relatively few changes to the UI. Hopefully this will open up the play field a bit.

I hate the idea. I buy consoles for the simplicity of NOT having to upgrade parts. I will be thoroughly annoyed if it comes to the point where I have to start swapping parts on my Xbox to play the newest and latest games. I tried doing that with a PC a while back and gaming is just not that important in my life to drop all of this money into it. Consoles have made it bearable in the sense that they are a one time investment. But not if this becomes a thing. It is simply, in my opinion, ludicrous to have to upgrade your specs every few months simply to have marginally sharper graphics or more boom booms on your screen at once.

I dont think I will be the only person who is opposed to this plan. Now, if Microsoft re-released the Xbox a few years from now with upgraded hardware and had a trade in/rebate program where you pay a discounted cost and they give you the fancy new console then refurbish the one you traded with new tech and so on and so forth, I would be open to that idea. But it's M$ were talking about here. They could probably make a new superior XB1 for 50 dollars and try selling it for 600. Now with Kinect 3.0 which plays the game for you! Clowns.

End rant. Sorry this is a touchy subject for a casual gamer such as myself.
