It means they're like bees. We should find ways to produce colonies and house them in hives so we can harvest them regularly for their sweet, sweet meta-alloys. Has anyone seen a Queen barnacle?
Spiders are animals. The insect variety, but animals nonetheless. Animal: Something that animates through it's own volition.

OH OH, let me jump on that before a dozen others do.....Spiders are not insects. they are bugs, sure, arachnids too (as are scorpions) but not insects. that requires exactly 6 legs to be called insects. Same with worms....bugs, but not insects. But you are correct to say spiders are animals. Now what do we call mushrooms? Not really animals yet have properties above and beyond plants.

I heard a rumor the "barnacles" were a immature form of Thargoid (possibly larve).
It's obvious that barnacles are biologically alive. What isn't obvious is whether they are engineered life forms as biotech or whether they are supposed to be a sort of natural alien life form.
There is precedent for that sort of thing in the natural world.
