News Frontier trading update.

Have FD ever commited to one season per year?
Enough delays could force 2.2 until Xmas and 3.0 to July 2017. Personally, I woudn't mind if it did, especially if we got a better quality game out of it. FD profits would suffer though, which ultimately doesn't help any of us..

They could extend the season, but it's unlikely.
They can't extend it too much for 2 reasons:
- financing: They need to sell season 3 as soon as possible
- competitors: if they keep delaying key features expected for future seasons, they might get "eaten" by competitors (if they happen to be good of course)

Quality is a very important thing, but they can't take all the time they want.
In addition, in massive patches is very difficult to get everything to a good quality level.
Unfortunately they can't reschedule the features and split the patch for marketing reasons (having renamed the content patches to "expansions", and having to give them financial relevance to the season).
Don't expect a bug-free release.

This morning we released a trading update that we wanted to share with you.

The update explains that our next instalment of the Horizons season of expansions (2.1 – The Engineers) which was previously planned for April will now move into the beginning of our next financial year. We’re aiming for to release the beta in May.

A mistake you've made there Zac. The update doesn't say launch delayed to "the beginning of our next financial year". It says "the first half of the next financial year" which is any time up to almost the end of 2016.

i know what they can do.. fix the current set of bugs before bringing in new content.. and ship skins? no fix the bugs!

Thank you Zac and Fdev's for the update. I really don't like waiting, but that's only because I'm impatient for things I think will be great. If it means a better game, the extra time is very understandable. As they say--- great things spring late

Actually no you are not. There are enough explanatory posts from Zac, Michael and also from David Braben - if you bothered to read them.
If you're so bothered to defend the rotten approach to gamedev, please provide the links to those posts, as I can't find them.
Or just delete my message as your coleagues did.
I think you have it backwards. This hurts Frontier's finances, but they say they have to do it to ensure quality.
Well backwards or not, that's what it says in the actual post. That for financial reasons content release been delayed.
And I can't see how the statement "the longer we do it the better it gets" is considered true while being near that other outright false statement, "outstanding track record of meeting demanding release schedules and exceptional quality thresholds."
Fooled me once.

It's just unfortunate that, 3 months after Horizons was released to lukewarm reception, the big update which could have brought some much-needed positive word of mouth to the game is now being pushed back at least another 3 months.

It's going to cost them revenue right now just so they can defer some tax or income into next quarter or whatever.

I'm sorry but I don't think there is any way to spin-doctor a financial decision like that into somehow being a positive move for the game. Reminds me of that Reddit post from the former LOTRO dev that dished on all the sad stuff that was going on with Turbine while they were trying to put a happy face on the game.

As someone else said, if we start hearing talk of going to F2P model we will know the writing is on the wall.

Stock dropped 13.4% after news of the delay. That's gotta hurt and I have to wonder if there's a lot more than just a "quality delay" going on. I sure hope not. Elite is simply the best game I've played, ever. It fits me like a wet T-shirt on a hot day (imagine that at your own peril).

FD need another round of fundraising? If so, I'll put another $150 into it, provided there's certain guarantees. For example, in the event that ED goes under, the elements needed to start our own servers (like David said many moons ago) would be released. Otherwise sign me up, I've got my $150 out of ED by far. Who's with me?

ED is probably the last time, in my lifetime, I'll get a game that seems made for my generation.

Which FD probably knew would happen, therefore its not likely they chose to delay for financial reasons like some suggest. Ok, so shares dropping do not directly affect FD's cash, after all, its the secondary market, FD already got money from the sale of those shares, but it can make shareholders nervous which can cause problems in the boardroom. Good job DBOBE retains controlling interest in the company otherwise the board could start causing problems, start demanding ED go F2P/P2W or something.

It'd be nice if David could grace the forum to say that, as opposed to going to Reddit.

Though posts I've seen on the subject here, have been generally supportive, "would rather wait for the quality," as you'd expect really on ED's own forum. Not saying the response has been completely different on Reddit, but it does make sense to post there in case of damage limitation for those prospective or less invested fans, Reddit being a more general forum. We all understand, so it's all good right?

I'm cool with FD taking their time to get it right and to raise the standard of quality compared to previous releases. Just hoping this statement actually carries through to release and we do indeed get a quality release.

Those bugged missions with 2.0 were a major source of annoyance, especially for new players trying to get started with ED for the first time. At least now according to Mike they will pull the bugged missions.... 2 and a half months after release. Well, better late than never i suppose.

Reality beginning to have it's first nibble?

Hope that Frontier will keep the interest of the players during this period of transition. With beautiful newsletters, the book of the concept art, the videos, the interviews ...
