News Frontier trading update.

Though posts I've seen on the subject here, have been generally supportive, "would rather wait for the quality," as you'd expect really on ED's own forum. Not saying the response has been completely different on Reddit, but it does make sense to post there in case of damage limitation for those prospective or less invested fans, Reddit being a more general forum. We all understand, so it's all good right?

Not really, IMO, no it isn't but, this isn't the place for that argument.

I hope FD's community and marketing teams have a communications plan to keep the fans/players engaged during the delay. I assume that last week's newsletter-only approach was to allow MB to try to get the release through the go/no-go meeting, but minimal comms for an extended period while they crunch will send the community into a state of febrile hysteria.

I'm not OK with this...
FD, if you wouldn't pushing Powerplayish or CQCish (sorry... Arena) gameplay, you could spend more time with more meaningful things.
I could say a lot other things, but I'd rather not...

I really like the speculations in this thread, keep'em coming people, I still have plenty of popcorn left! [big grin]

Hope this helps :D :

… FD need another round of fundraising? If so, I'll put another $150 into it, provided there's certain guarantees. For example, in the event that ED goes under, the elements needed to start our own servers (like David said many moons ago) would be released. Otherwise sign me up, I've got my $150 out of ED by far. Who's with me?

Unfortunately I won’t be with you, sorry. :) As much as I want ED to succeed, like many other people, I’m not an unlimited financial cash-cow that can just give away £150 at the drop of a hat. As far as I’m concerned, I already invested in PB way back in May 2014, built a new PC to play it on, a HOTAS set up, bought the boxed edition, all the pins and badges, and now saving for VR. (As an aside, if ED fails, then I’d expect FD to release the elements to start our own servers regardless of launching another KS or not. I did sign up for <sigh> offline after all, so it’s the least FD could do to make amends, IMO.)

Good job DBOBE retains controlling interest in the company otherwise the board could start causing problems, start demanding ED go F2P/P2W or something.

I wouldn’t put it past the board or shareholders to strong arm DBOBE into P2W, especially if FD needs a regular flow of cash coming in. If that happens, and God forbid it will, that’ll be one heck of a slap in the face. :)

The whole "going F2P" thing, I'm interested to see someone introduce some real numbers and a feasibility study that shows F2P provides FD with more revenue all things considered.

An argument or discussion that offers more than simply looking at other F2P successes and believing their model translates, particularly that ED can somehow magically transform into a game using that model.

I recognise that the likelihood of getting any analysis or constructive input is a vainer hope than predicting British weather, but I am interested in the responses all the same.

That's quite enough drama and unfounded speculation about 'going F2P, P2W, needing money, board-mandated change of direction' or whatever else. They had to delay a product, that has consequences, DB has had to eat humble pie with his board and stakeholders, engineering management has had to be the naughty schoolboys with DB, and now they are going back to making the game. If you need more drama in your life, write a play.

Thanks Zac. I think this raises two critical questions which could do with a quick answer. In order to prevent a forum meltdown. 1) How will this impact release dates for 2.2/2.3/2.4? 2) Will we get any more bug fixes prior to 2.1?

I sure hope the update will be as colossal as it's said to be. In the meantime, this seems like a good time to extend my current exploration trip. :)

This news is a turning point in the game. When 2.1 will be released and if the sales are bad, we'll can say that the future of ED is compromised. At least the ambitions seriously revised downwards

In the end FD has already made their money on ED. I fail to see why it matters from here on out in all honesty. They have enough money in the bank to 'keep the lights on' as it were for years to come. And they do have other games in development (both known and unknown). Planet Coaster is going to make a serious amount of bucks if it plays even half as good as it looks so far.

All these people predicting that FD are in some sort sort of financial crisis really don't know what they are talking about. Also the nature of game development is such that you will have times when you are not making money, thats just the nature of the beast.

Just sit back and enjoy the show (until someone's will lose it and the thread gets locked). Popcorn?

I wonder if this desire for quality is going to apply to 2.2 onwards. Will look a bit suspect if the desire for quality no longer applies to those updates.

On a personal basis I've been involved with FD in a limited capacity for 3 years as a moderator, 9+ years on the forum and a fan of their games for 20+ years.

In all that time I can honestly say that yes they have made some mistakes when it comes to communicating things to their fanbase and I'm sure in the future that the could very well do so again.

However in all that time I've always known that they have had the very best of intentions to their customers and try to make the very best games they can and do their best to release information when they can. Some of us were on the forum waiting for what was then pencilled in as Elite IV for years and Frontier bless them would never confirm a release date as they didn't know themselves and didn't want to create false hope, however much we badgered them.

I know some of the Staff personally and consider them friends and you could not meet a nicer bunch of people and when I see some of the barbed comments they get to say I'm not impressed is an understatement.

So, please remember that when the toys start flying out of the pram and chuck accusations about.

I'd say in the game industry a lot of other companies could learn a few things from David and his staff about how they do their best for the community that has grown around Frontier.

I'd rather have a well polished update than not.

This delay is no surprise to me and of course FDev won't tell us the real reasons for that.
Perhaps they just realized that ED is loosing its player base faster then expected and so they decided to do a desperate attempt to counteract this by announcing a 'commitment to quality' for 2.1.

I stopped playing ED the same day as ED:Horizons was released.
At that day i came to the conclusion that the game is a mess of bad designed, meaningless and unlinked game mechanics which don't give me a reason to continue playing.
