Please convince me....

I am thinking of pre ordering the Vive anytime soon. How much better is ED with VR? Is VR a game changer? Please convince me!

VR is a game changer full stop.

If you can drop the cash, do so. If that's a lot of money for you, find someone with a Rift or similar and experience it before you commit.

It is quite frankly a digital frontier to reshape the human condition *cough*, however, this first generation is NOT the Star Trek TNG holodeck, so your mileage may vary. However, you'll never forget the sense of scale it invokes within the cockpits of larger Elite ships, and some of the other 3rd party content is amazing.

This is still at the bleeding edge hardware/software wise, so it's not a perfectly rounded experience, but for the most part, it is awesome.

It is the difference between playing a spaceship video game, and flying in a spaceship. Though, I'd suggest playing with a HOTAS to complete the effect. My wife was complaining I was breathing too loudly when I was dog fighting (mostly in War Thunder). So, it's pretty immersive.

I originally pre-ordered the Rift, but after trying Room Scale and watching a bunch of Node videos, I decided on the Vive. The seated experience is amazing, but I've been there and done that. I need more!

Prior to getting my DK2 I was running Elite on a Triple Monitor Setup (3x24 inch screens at 5760x1080) complete with a home built gaming chair, TrackIR and a Warthog Hotas setup. Elite was good, but I had only put in about 50 hours which is pretty average for a game for me. Then I got a DK2 and I'm now several hundred hours into the game, still amazed every time i play. The difference is literally the difference between playing a game on a screen, and actually feeling like you are in the cockpit of a ship. The 3d in VR is done amazingly well. I always knew the cobra was a 2 seater, but being able to turn my head and see the actual co-pilot seat, being able to lean in and see the words written on the side, being able to turn all the way around in my seat and see the door leading into the cockpit, all these things seem minor, but the level of immersion they add is more than you can get from just playing on a monitor. Since getting my DK2, I literally havent played a single game on my triple monitor setup. The experience was so breathtaking I ordered an Obutto Revolution and built a complete cockpit setup including a butt kicker for vibration feedback, followed that with a new i7 Skylake 6600k build with a 980ti, and have pre-ordered both the Vive and the Rift (Will sell one after I've tried them both). Like any new technology, VR is expensive to be able to do properly right now, but from someone who has been a gamer since the original Atari / Intellivision, has had almost every console, have been a computer gamer since the late 80's and building computers ever since, VR is the biggest gaming leap I have ever seen as far as the possibilities.

It makes you realise that 2D panels are a bit weird.
Why look at a picture of something when you can be in it?

It makes this game. Seriously, it's that big of a deal. After playing it on my DK2, I can't play it on a monitor anymore. You just have to experience it and you'll understand. It's like the difference between watching a race and being a racecar driver.

Well it didn't take much. Thanks for your replies. I preordered the Vive last night. This us going to be the longest 2 months of my life :-(

Wow this sounds like quite a setup you have. You should post a pic:)

the difference between playing a game on a monitor and playing inside a game.

total gamechanger, i would never want to go back.... currently without VR HMD and playing on 70 inch telly and ED is a shadow of its former self.

For me now it's VR ....or NOTHING!
For fun I tried playing again on my 46' HD monitor and even with the obviously much better resolution, I did'nt last 5 minutes before laughing and shutting the monitor down and back to VR I went, for good!
This was 8 months ago.

It's a risk buying a Vive now just for elite. They have promised support but it's uncertain when that support will be fully implemented. The extended mode it currently uses will soon be dropped by steamVR. Then Vive may have the same problems that rift has with ED. I believe it's because frontier can't do direct mode rendering in the current game engine.

If you want to experience a revolution in gaming and don't mind the uncertainty regarding this particular game then go for it. You will never game on a monitor again.

Hopefully the reported delays in releasing further updates will allow rework of the foundation of the engine to support VR properly.

I've never tried VR before but I pre-ordered the Vive based on lots of positive reports from many people using other gear.

To me it's a solid investment.

Its a much bigger risk buying the Oculus and hoping like the girl who never got laid

You mean the same extended mode that has already been dropped by Oculus?

Copied and pasted from my first impressions post when I compared VR using DK2 to the VR-lite experience I was used to for ED: 3D, headtracking and HOTAS.

[UPDATE] Still blown away! And boy, with VR, Horizons REALLY shines!

[EDIT] When I say 'Blur', I am not talking about 'smear', blur is blur due to DK2's low res. :)
.

[I created the 3D Vision fix so I'm fairly sure I needn't worry about hurting my own feelings...]
.
.
tl;dr: VR (DK2) wins, obviously.
.
.
I have gamed in 3D for nearly 10 years now. I can't no longer play in 2D because I can't get immersed. I am addicted to games. I eat drink dream games. BUT can effortlessly walk past any game when not in 3D. I currently have a DK2 on loan from a kind friend.
.
.
***DAY 1***
.
I put it on and executed the OR software's desktop simulator to acclimatise. Pretty cool! I was in the room. Yes I tried to touch the card towers.
.
Ran ED:H
.
ROUND #1 - DK2
  • My experience went something like this:
  • Looked around the cockpit of my Asp E.
  • Noticed how big it was.
  • Looked at the floor.
  • Felt vertigo (the good kind).
  • Noticed I was actually holding my breath. Literally took my breath away!
  • Lined up for docking at an outpost (FA Off at all times)
  • Noticed how big it was.
  • Double take of the size of the outpost.
.
  • Docked
  • Noticed the blur
  • Noticed I had to keep the head kit at precisely the right place to keep the blur to a minimum
  • Noticed I really had to tighten the headgear
  • Noticed the 'dots'
  • Noticed the text!
  • Noticed I was conscious of the headgear.
  • Noticed I had to sit up really straight.
.
  • Undocked
  • Tried some combat
  • Noticed the blur
  • Took off the unit
.
.
INTERLUDE
  • Felt actual dismay at how small my 27" monitor now looked.
  • Marvelled at how clear and vibrant it was.
.
.
ROUND #2 3D Vision + EDTracker Pro
.
  • Noticed how sensitive I had the headtracking
  • Turned down sensitivity
  • Aware of the 'light' aspect of VR 'lite'.
  • Considered how much smaller things seemed
  • But very much aware at how much brighter and clearer things seemed in game
  • Quickly back in the immersion zone
  • Wife called me to bed.
.
.
INTERLUDE
  • Snuck in a quick Rift demo. Temple Run clone. My first impression of 3rd person perspective games in VR wasn't great. Frankly 3D Vision won here, with regard immersion in similar games (toyification, looking down a fixed perspective like guns etc.)
  • Quit game
  • Star Conflict - also pants bar looking down at the floor which resulted in good vertigo.
  • Remembered weight
  • Remembered text
  • Remembered bad things basically
  • Looked at the cables
  • Wasn't sure what to do with it
  • Boxed the headgear but kept the camera plugged in
.
.
.
***DAY 2***
.
  • Serious, I mean SERIOUS cogitation about giving the DK2 another go or not.
  • Decided I was borrowing it so might not get another chance.
  • Unboxed and connected DK2
.
.
ROUND #3 - DK2
  • Blown away
  • Blown away
  • Blown away
  • Looked at the size of the handles in the Asp E
  • Blown away
.
  • Looked at the planet
  • Landed
  • Bummed about in the SRV
  • Realised I was really enjoying just jumping about on the planet.
  • Didn't want to leave the surface
  • Returned to the ship
  • Noticed it looked massive
.
  • Swapped the Asp E for a DBS (super quick, super manoeuvrable, super FOV)
  • Returned to planet
  • FA off
  • Low flying
  • Red impact lights flashing
  • Thrilling
.
  • Crossed a ravine
  • First thoughts: jumping across this in the SRV would be SWEET!
.
  • Boosted hitting the lateral thruster
  • Watched the surface rapidly drop away from me.
.
.
GAME OVER
.
.
VERDICT
.
DK2 wins
.
BUT
.
I could return to VR-lite, push come shove and very quickly re-acclimatise. But I REALLY couldn't play ED in 2D. I think going back to VR-lite is doable because it is in stereo which, let's face it is the biggest deal when it comes to VR and you also have head tracking, which is nice too.
.
Anyway!!!
Had to get that off my chest.
.
p.s.
.
As promised...
.
DBS is the best ship to fly using VR: FACT!

It's a game changer, alright. It changes the galaxy map from "quite ok to navigate" to "virtually unusable" and it makes driving on planet surfaces a nauseating mess. I have a DK2 and yes, the first time you do something in VR it's quite exciting, but to me the drawbacks of the abysmal resolution and the simulation sickness in the SRV caused me to stop using it after a few hours.

Try before you buy, and if you can, try it for more than 30 minutes straight! Otherwise you might have burned almost a thousand bucks for a few minutes of fun.

I felt that way when I first put it on. The second time, different story.
.
I have my controls all linked to my £30 HOTAS. The only keyboard key I need is 'space' to turn FA Off or when I am searching for a star system using its name. I am used to controlling everything using the joystick, including the Galaxy map. It doesn't take long to do.
.
With that in mind, once you know how to intuitively control the Galaxy map in VR, in VR I think it is actually BRILLIANT! A highlight even! Have you ever seen the Stella cartography deck (?) in Star Trek? When the crew are standing amongst the stars to find something? It is very much like this once you are used to it.
.
Read my post above showing how much fun SRV is in VR!
.
The system map is a bit of a pain, going from one planet to the next in the system map is really slow for some reason. :)

Its a much bigger risk buying the Oculus and hoping like the girl who never got laid

she must never have met me back in my teen years..... otherwise she would have been fine ;)

seriously tho the vive is certainly the safer bet for vr support in ED.
Its a shame that (for what i want - i am not stating this as a fact for everyone) the HMD is not as good. :(

It's not really up to us to convince you to buy a VR Helmet. It is a lot of money, and you do have to factor in the cost of the Super-Whizzo computer needed to render such a detailed fake world.

If you get a chance you should try before you buy. If you get the chance, come along to one of the Elite Meets, Fantasticons, or Lavecons. Everyone who has a VR headset is very evangelical about it and they'd be more than happy to let you have a go. The more converts to the Church of VR the happier we are.

We won't need to convince you after you've tried it for yourself.
