Strange scan on Shadow Mission

I entered my target system and saw a green authority vessel. Tried to avoid the interdiction but he got me, so I submitted.

Immediately I turned to face the viper and was ready to shoot him when I heard scan detected, but I heard nothing and then about 10 seconds later I got my failed mission events :(

I am sat in normal space and the copper just left me and went away ....

Weird or is this normal as not done shadows before. ?

Watching some recent youtube videos and they always get the warning scan detected and as long as you avoid it by outrunning or shooting / tagging them, you are fine as I thought it always was.

But this copper seemed to fail all my missions (5 of them) on sight and no warning.

Normal, you should have attacked him before the scan completed, or did a runner if you had a fast ship. Either way, staring at them won't help ;)

The "Scan Detected" message is just that, your ship letting you know that it has detected an active scan. Once you hear that message, it typically takes about 10 seconds for the other ship to complete their scan. If you are unable to get out of range, or otherwise get the ship to stop scanning you inside this 10 seconds time period, then you will fail any shadow delivery missions you have.

If you did not shoot the scanning ship, this sounds perfectly normal.

If you did shoot the ship, and turn him red, then it is not.

Once the scan starts, you have two choices, run out of range or shoot him. By what you've described, it sounds like you did the worst thing just to stand still and let the scan complete.

I turned to face the Viper, ready for the scan detected notification that DID NOT come. I was finger on the trigger waiting for the message / voice.

Next time I am going to just shoot and turn him red.

My experience is hanging around green ships = failed missions. The only thing that has reliably worked for me is distance. I usually submit immediately so they (mostly) drop out behind me and boost early and often until I can jump to another system.

mmm, yes that option sounds like what I will do from now on. I am in a fully A rated normal Asp so might have enough speed with full ENG pips.

Ah, I see what you mean.

Yes, that is a known bug, that on some rare occasions CMDR's never get the initial "Scan Detected" message. If you have video (or not), I'd suggest filing a ticket. If a scan was completed on you with out the warning showing first, that is a bug. It is a known bug. File a ticket.

I begin boosting immediately, and start putting as much distance between myself an any security ships as quickly as possible. I don't wait around for scanning messages. I shoot as a last resort.

ahhh, another bug :( grrr this is getting annoying as I thought I would try Shadow to try and find some fun again in ED, but I run into another buggy mission system.

Many thanks for clarifying this.

It works fine, bottom line is if a cop pulls you out of warp you either shoot or run - Don't sit there waiting for notifications.

Eh. In an interdiction event, assume every ship is trying to scan you. Don't let anyone inside of 1.5km. If you can't shake them, shoot them, then shake them. No warnings necessary.

This.

On the other hand, not very much you can do when you're just pulling into the dock and get the warning because security just spawned - I swear they must have been scanning me from inside the station! Too little time to get into the hanger bay, and of course mass-locked by the station so can't run or jump in time. So now I don't take fail on scan missions, only the fail on destruction. I get the occasional fine but at least the payout's intact.

And what is it with System Authority ships in systems with no Authority - or people come to that? At least the goods aren't illicit in those systems so I just let them scan me like a good little CMDR...

Thanks all.

I do not wait for any scanned message now. If Authority I let rip and tag them and get out of dodge as they tend to be in faster ships. If not, then I usually boost away in my Asp.

Just completed a 5 Shadow run for about 12mil credits as a test run without any major issues :)

Many thanks again.

I never shoot them. You can always run away, as long as you boost immediately when they appear. I often hear, "Scan detected", but the scan never completes before I'm out of range. IMHO, it's a little too easy to get away.

Do heat sinks work for shaking scans?

This is what I use and they seem to work most times but on the odd occasion it fails and the scan goes through, everytime I've had it fail it's been in an instance with the outpost and a security ship present. I am wondering if this is a bug.

No. Heat sinks will have minimal, if any, effect on your heat signature, and thus whether or not you can be resolved, targeted, and scanned. You are experiencing a placebo effect, and were likely out of scan range.

Cheers, how about chaff? I'm sure when NPCs chaff it break a KWS.

Same. AFAIK, Chaff is not meant to affect KWS, or Cargo scans. It is a known bug that NPC Chaff effects player scans. Sandro has commented that they are "working on it."

The bug is not present for players against NPC's, and our chaffing does not affect NPC scans in any way.

This is obviously a bug.

Blimey it all seems a bit of a mess tbh.

In CQC heat sinks drop your temp and as a result drop any locks but it seems the same is not true in the main game.

Chaff stops scans, which makes total sense and is what you'd would expect, but apparently for some reason this is a longstanding "bug" which you wouldn't expect.

Really whether it's a bug or not, this is how the game behaves and has done for a year, I think it's perfectly reasonably that NPCs follow the same rules. =/
