General / Off-Topic Favorite Sci-Fi weapon

So in an attempt to keep merriment in the forums and give people something to talk about apart from the usual threads (here's looking at you Solo vs Open Threadnaught), the previous thread was about your favorite Elite and non-Elite ship (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=237074). This thread will be all about your favorite Sci-Fi weapon both in Elite and outside of the Elite realm!

Weapons are a difficult subject to narrow down as there are so many variations, purposes, and styles. So anything from handheld to planet destroyers is okay but let's try to keep it in the realm of Sci-Fi (no M1 grandes for example). Also, anything in the Elite realm (meaning prior to Dangerous) is also okay.

Mine are:

Elite - no one is going to agree with me on this, but mines. I remember when one of the first trailers that came out for the Elite Beta was a Viper fighting off 2 Sidewinders with mines. Granted, I've used them in game and there no where near as useful, but taking out an enemy who's on your six with a mine is oh so satisfying.

Outside of Elite - MAC cannons from the Halo series. There's just something about accelerating a half ton of tungsten to quarter the speed of light that gets my blood pumping :D

Rep all around to those that post. Enjoy :D

First thing I thought of was the MAC Guns from Halo. Awesome fire power. But aren't they sort of glorified rail guns? I mean, it's one rail gun half the size of a Farragut, but still.

Staying on Halo, I always liked the Covenant plasma Cannons, but then those are similar to elites Plasma Accelerators, which, for some reason remind me of photon torpedoes.

If we're not just looking at a singular "weapon," but rather, a "weapon system," the shifting, augmenting, body suits from the Hyperion book series are seriously         boss.

Wing Commander - "Skipper" anti-capship missile (cloaks, travels, radar-pings, cloaks, travels...booom!)

Generally: Mines are great! We need cluster mines! More mines and useful ordinance!

I'm not really sure what the difference between a rail gun and a MAC cannon is as I've also heard them referred to as Gauss cannons. But as I understand them it's a chunk of metal that's accelerated through a magnetic field. So, maybe size classifies the difference? Either way, it's a HUGE chunk of metal sent through an extremely powerful magnetic field. Mass Effect had a similar one and I remember reading about a species who made one so big, they fired it at a Reaper but missed. The shot kept going and struck a nearby moon, which left it with a huge permanent scar that was visible from space.

And yes, anything "weapon" would apply, including powered armor :D

Edit: And apparently Gilligan, I've given you rep fairly recently so how about a virtual +1 rep? :)

My favorite sci fi weapon is the MD device from Ender's Game. One-shot planetary genocide. Totally awesome.

Shame on me, but I've never read Ender's Game. I've seen the movie, but I feel it didn't do it justice :( I'll get the tar and feathers.

I remember those! Seriously FD, we need some more explosives!

If we're going outside of games, I like a weapon that wasn't designed as such. The Asgard transporter aboard the Daedalus was used to beam nukes over to several Wraith ships and blow them up from the inside. It's a multipurpose weapon.

In ED, it's much more mundane. My favorite is the Particle Accelerator for its module killing splash damage.

LOL... Duke Nukem, right? Or was that Doom... it's been such a long time since I've seen that particular beast.

Is that StarGate?

Yes, ED is much more mundane but I know there were some weapons that were quite revered prior to ED (i.e. what was the bomb in FE2 that destroyed stations?)

Who knows. Either way, it's bad ass.

And how could I forget Wing Zero's colony-vaporizing dual beam cannon?

And since "Powered body suits" are fair game, I think every Gundam pretty much makes the list. :D

Especially the Zero system in Wing Zero.

Deathscyth's scythes are Epic, so was Epyon's beam-whip.

Which MAC cannon because there is the ship mounted MAC mark 2 it fires 600 metric tons solid tungsten round or the Mark 5 (or super mac) that fire a 3000 metric ton tungsten round at 12000KPS(kilometers per second)

Gauss guns and railguns both use magnetic fields to accelerate the projectile, but with different arrangements of conductors and fields. A gauss gun (a.k.a coilgun) has coils wrapped around the barrel, while a railgun has conductive rails along the barrel's sides.

Wow, that's impressive. Good info, thanks! Any idea what a MAC cannon is? Is it the same?
