So, in the context of ED, do you prefer to compete against or cooperate with other players?

Note:
Its not a question of PvP/PVE, PvP can be a matter of improving cooperation with wingmates more than beating opponents, PvE can be a matter of competing via the BGS or to get the top spot in a CG.
Its not a question about game modes. Again, you can compete via the BGS from solo. You can cooperate with other players in Open.
Its not a question about specific game mechanics. With powerplay you can cooperate with others to achieve your power's goals and compete against others to beat their power over control of a system.

Many aspects of the game can be viewed as either or both.

But in general, which aspect do you prefer? The ability to compete, or the ability to cooperate?

And yes, two pole options. No fence sitting. Of course, most probably enjoy both. Choose one. :p

Ditto "both". Most of the "co-operative" gameplay is still competing against someone else - Powerplay (by definition), CGs (there are often opposing sides), BGS - less obvious, I don't know if anyone is actually competing against the side I "support" (Omagatae Liberals), but I know some groups cooperate against other groups.

So, yeah, I like competitively cooperating. ;-)

I'm currently taking a break. I feel that due to the frequency of rants and threats of rage quits and the like that I should qualify this by saying that this break isn't motivated by anything like that. Breaks are good for the head. It's that simple. Also, it should be noted that this game is designed to be fundamentally non-competitive. Hence the focus on community goals where even ones that have a possibility of competition are set up from the outset as so one-sided that it's clear which side you are urged to take. For example, anyone choosing the Red Dawn side in the CZ community goal essentially made a mistake and played for no reward. Any discussion on this topic should be taken with a pinch of salt. While I'm certain that feedback is heeded by the Devs. From what I've seen, quite a bit more seriously than other games I've played. But the scope of change possible must be considered. I can't see a possibility of a change in focus from co-op to competition, without first requiring a rework that would put any working road map back considerably. Probably not back to square one, but certainly back to a very early stage of development.

Anyway, you've asked for my preference/opinion, so here it is. Were the game more competitive, I probably wouldn't be on a break right now. I'm competitive by nature, and competition in a game such as this would drive me to play possibly longer than is healthy. Whether or not that would be a good thing is arguable. As it stands, I'm looking for the type of gameplay that doesn't require a lot of commitment. The new missions would have provided that, and so I've made the call to give it a rest until that update comes out.

I'm a little torn here though, between whether I'd prefer the healthy gaming provided by this game currently, or the type of game that sucks me in and makes me play longer than I should. As a gamer, I'd say competitive wins. As a husband and father, this type of cooperative game is better.

So hard to choose... aaargh. Well, the evenings are getting longer, and my daughter is unbearably cute. Co-op wins. :)

Apparently i'm the only person who voted compete so far, because I have no friends and pirate :(... the sadness (would have clearly chosen a both option, both are good)

You should try pirating with friends, makes it a lot easier depending on their ship of choice.

Cooperating with others on community goals, usually in Solo. I've no time for people interested in harming others' game.

Actually I really didn't like the addition of wings, I felt it was a harsh penalty for playing by yourself (and at the time I had to deal with people constantly exploiting shield reset), I felt that piracy was in a reasonable state if you kept it at a 1v1, but once you get to wings it becomes too easy to attack any target and take literally everything (which you have to do to pay more people)

I'm not knocking anybody else for enjoying flying with their friends, but it wasn't for me, i'd help people out on my list if they were in trouble but i never really did anything aggressive in a group, only defensive.

Since I play the BGS, I mostly cooperate. However, the nature itself of the BGS is competitive in the long run, so I went for that.

Don't mind taking more especialy from the big ships which is usualy why you bring friends in the first place. The traders can handel it and either way they are making a lot more cash in an hour than you will in a week. Pirating solo is also far from the easiest thing you can do already, friends just make the job a tad bit easier.

But I see where you come from but one always has the choice to avoid an unfavorable situation. Think I'll be going up against your Anaconda and your Corvette friend at once in my Python? Sorry but my Python is feeling rather slimey today. *FSD charging* Hell, same thing I do when I stumbel upon a Corvette or what have you filled to the brim with SCBs. Thanks but no thanks.

I chose cooperate given you could only select 1.

That aside, whilst you said it's not a question of PvP or PvE, IMO ultimately it is.

  • Those that prefer the environment and AI (PvE), community events (CGs) and perhaps engage in some PvP [combat] activities (or be completely PvP-Combat adverse) will choose cooperate
  • Those that prefer a more direct confrontational approach (PvP-Combat) or enjoy leaderboards (CGs) or PP (eugh!) will choose compete.

Good effort though - results don't mean anything yet - too small a sample size :)

BGS enthusiast Here.

Really enjoy the Coop on a moment to moment basis.
Kill to be in a wing.

Everything is better in a wing.

BUT.

Also like having enemies
Also love to get a schadenfreudgasm when I see them go down.

And I love to watch other groups fight.

Plus theres this [redacted]

In general I can get behind a co-op game with close friends, but in Elite, I prefer to be left alone in my own sandbox and you all can play in yours :D
