Attacks near stations in Open

Quick question guys, how does a cmdr inside the NFZ (2km from the starport) get away with attacking a clean ship in Open?

Used to mainly fly in Open, now generally fly in Mobius for a faster connection (No SC dropout lag etc) I still use open for CG's and general PvP.

Long story short, I was just at HIP 20277, sat in a T9 outside Fabian city trying to fix an imbalance with my rudder pedals, had the rift off so wasn't monitoring traffic. Next thing I hear is weapons fire, get back in the game and some guys in a Cobra and Dbx are firing at me with railguns... Inside the NFZ with police patrolling the port :/

So the idiots thought my Lakon was a fat easy target, I have A8 shields, military hull etc etc, I simply docked the ship with my dodgy rudder pedals, taking fire while I was going through the rack. If i was a newbie I would have been killed for no reason while police stood by and watched :/

Can someone explain why the cops didn't get involved?

They do, but like all things crime and Punishment in ED, are slow to react. This is how people get away with attacking you near a station. High burst damage weapons and an understanding your probably going to also die in the attempt due to the station also help

I won't lie and say I've not done it myself (in systems where there is a war on and i spot someone I know has been fighting for the other side)

Doesn't the station assist as soon as the police get involved? I was under attack for a while, under my desk fixing my pedals.. had to get back in my seat, get into the rift, figure out what the heck is going on and then dock a ship that wanted to yaw sideways. it wasn't like a 5 second attack, they fired for a while right next to the toaster rack.

I initially ignored it because I thought the cops were just shooting an npc

The ship would have been toast if I hadn't kitted it out for bulk hauling missions. Im not aligned to anyone, had zero cargo onboard and clean status.

It does but generally speaking it takes a bit to kill a player
If they don't mind dying so they can clobber you in the process, they can take the heat for a bit.

Ok, you were in the NFZ, but were they in the NFZ? If they weren't, then the NPCs will often ignore them firing at targets inside the NFZ, which I think is a bug, at least I consider it such. I've had NPCs do that to me more than a few times after they've chased me to a station. I come out of sc, head for the station, they come out behind me and fire on me after I've hit the NFZ, cops don't do anything sometimes, other times they get all excited and go nuts chasing the NPC off, often hitting ME with their weapons fire in the process. Which is rather realistic I think, having seen how awesome real world police are at hitting what they aim at.... 72 rounds fired, not a single shot hit the truck the suspect was in...great shooting there Barney!

Ok, you were in the NFZ, but were they in the NFZ?

Not sure mate mate, but considering the Rail gun range is 3km (last time I checked) They would have been inside the NFZ.

Anyway, another cmdr witnessed the whole thing

Cmdr *****splitter, if you read these forums it would be good if you could chime in, or pm me.

Cheers guys

Maybe it was an anarchy system?

No dude, cops are everywhere, I come here often to do canyon flying on a nearby planet.

No way would I park a T9 in open outside an anarchy station while I troubleshoot my Hotas ;) I'd deserve to be attacked by a wing of railgun FDLs!

system map says Empire, high security, Corporate.

Btw, this station stocks 15 ships and every module, quite a nice place excluding the psychopaths.

Why the cops didn't get involved?
How does the AI work in these situations?
May be the cops just didn't see what was going on. A line-of-sight anomaly in the AI algorithms.
There could be an element of RNG in this too.
Or you didn't contribute to their Christmas Ball fund.[woah][money]

AI's more or less out of whack, the lot I've seen... scan-rams, floating idle inside station doing nothing (at best 11 ships just chilling there), or parked in docking queue (and never docking), and so on...

From Isinona's vids I recall if you are in the NFZ and fire at another ship you get a minor fine. 100 creds? Something silly like that.
And one of his first lines is "Provided, that is, that you shoot either nothing or 'Wanted' ships."
.
So doesn't explain what happened to 777Driver
.
edit - since he had report crimes off, it explains it perfectly

I was always under the impression people used hacks or station blind spots to get around these things.. Remember that infamous cmdr who constantly had a scratch? So basically I can fly into any patrolled station with a tooled up ship, just melt newbies in cargo ships for fun, How can that even be allowed in game?

If you had 'report crimes against me' off then they would have been able to shoot you all day long, only getting a fine for weapons fire within the NFZ.

Did you turn "Report Crimes against me" on?

Report crimes is for a police response when pulled out of warp and attacked. Why should I need it turned on outside a station? It's like getting your butt kicked outside a police station, cops are like 'not my problem'..

Well you learn something new every day.. Do you think that game mechanic actually makes sense, how would these guys have known I leave it off?

I always thought report crimes is for those police responses when they warp in to save you. Case closed, I guess this is my Karma for switching it off and smuggling weapons around the galaxy

I am sorry that happened to you mate, but you only get minor fine inside the firing zone, only once you blow your target that one becomes wanted, that is when the station gets involved and the security ships around it scramble to help. Slow if you ask me
