Though history has shown that getting involved in something like this (even to calm the waters) is usually a mistake, I'm going to attempt it anyhow (yeah, I'm that kinda foolish). Please keep in mind that I've got no vested interest on either side- I luv ya all.
Basically the problem here isn't the people, it's the tool- Discord doesn't support user names per server, which I think everyone who uses it complains about. Here's the timeline:
The guys in the CC server were jacking around, and changed their user names to a bunch of symbols. One of them (who is completely unrepresented in this thread) responded to something on the DWE server in a text channel without realizing that he was appearing as the symbols he'd set up on the CC server. This was an honest mistake, and unintentional- he was not looking to sow a bunch of chaos. Anyhow, when the announcement came out that names with just symbols was not allowed (and that anyone with one would be banned beginning at 10:30 AM PST), he immediately changed his name back to normal- he was also very contrite and somewhat regretful that he'd upset the DWE folks. Two other folks who were active in the CC server did not change their names back immediately- they both felt that so long as they weren't posting in the channels on the DWE server, they were fine, and that should they want to post on DWE channels, they would abide by the ruling- they said as much. At that point, it appeared the issue had been laid to rest. Shortly after, Kancro came over to discuss it with us- I'm afraid that one of our folks took some offense that there seemed to be some cross-server bleed of rules, and asked (as politely as I'd expect an angry person to be) that the DWE server admins deal with issues there, and that he'd be sure to inform everyone on the CC server that they should abide by the DWE rules when posting there. Again, it seemed to be laid to rest. Around that time (within a few minutes) the user changed his name back to his 'normal' name. Then, at about 10:10 AM PST, the user in the CC server who had spoken to Kancro (and who had his name back to normal) was banned from the DWE server. The other user with a symbol name was not a member of the DWE server, so was unaffected. It was noted about this time that the ban happened even though the user had never posted in a text channel on DWE with an odd name, he'd changed his name back, AND that there were still 20 minutes left on the time deadline. This resulted in what you're looking at now- a bunch of angry posts on the forum. That's the timeline, from a neutral third party.
I know Kancro has been back to discuss this since this blew up here, and his efforts are greatly appreciated (even by the angered user).
Anyhow, I'd like to throw out some conjecture, and ask if this is the issue because it's quite likely this is something else all together, in a technical sense. In Discord, all the users names who are connected are shown in a box along the right hand side of the screen. Because all user names are shared across servers (something we cannot resolve), was the issue that he appeared in that list with an odd name? The assumption on the part of the user was that so long as he hadn't posted in the channels with a crazy name, he was doing no harm - the terminologies being used to describe all this (servers, channels, using) are somewhat vague when a tool like Discord is involved, as it's got a fair amount of bleed between servers. I'm sure that had someone come over and said "hey guys- we see this weird stuff in our user list, and it's making people nuts, can you deal with it?" the user in question would have reacted quite differently. He may have changed his name back immediately, he may have left the DWE server temporarily, who knows- I do know he wouldn't have become angry that it appeared the DWE server folks were trying to apply their rules across other servers. His main source of anger is that to all appearances, he did abide by the rules, before the deadline, and still was punished.
It's clear Discord has a few functionality issues that are sure to cause grief, but there's no reason to turn the shortfalls of that program into a civil war. In other words, don't make me turn this expedition around, you guys. I will- you just ask your mother.
