The Federal Gunship compared to the The Fer-De-Lance

Don't get me wrong, i'm all up for an agility buff, as that baby really packs a punch, yet:

Dropship, hullmass 580 tons, cargo max 156 tons

Gunship, hullmass 580 tons, max cargo 168 tons

While the gunship has a larger internal space volume wise, the higher rated internal slots are a drawback.
The FDS has 7 internals, the gunship has 5 internals, this limits the versatility a lot.
The lacking agility would be o.k. if the internals were improved, like being split up to cater for even more internals,
actually allowing the FGS to do combat without being a paperplane.

Since shields are weak on the dropship series it would be substantial to have the possibility of being strong on the hull-defense (HRP) but the ship simply cannot cater to this,
due to limited internals:

Dropship maximum defense hull 3260 (military with HRP)

Gunship maximum defense 2775 hull (military + HRP)

Do you see the problem?
The combat ship with weak shields, that has to go for hull defense cannot do so, compared to the Dropship.
Basically the Dropship is faster, more agile and has better defense, all at the measley cost of 2 small Hardpoints and even requiring less rank and being cheaper to afford!

Not even better than it's predecessor now that is sad. That's like the Imperial clipper being worse than the Imperial Eagle if we're going by you know the fact that in this situation it's the equivalent to what the empire has.

I can't wait to see how this ship performs in atmosphere. Seems like more then almost any other ship in the game, like one that would perform well doing so. It's already the best base attacker in the entire game.

It does perform average,
it definitely has a stronger upward thrust, than downwards.
So don't flip the ship upside-down trying to eye-scan the area or you will crash.

I never even thought about it being used for atmospheric planets, doubtlessly though, planets and bases will become much more important in the future so the Gunship may yet have a future of being one the best atmospheric spacecraft. Which in turn might give it a future as a semi-exploration vessel, though it may need a better fsd for it.

Given on the current implementation of base raids any ship with a load of class2 hardpoints is a good choice, due to missile spamming death sentence.
The FGS just reatains some more weapons fit for having different loadouts, yet the placement of the small hps is hinting to turrets.
Think of it as a "Mitchell bomber" slow, sturdy and well armed.

The FDL though can do the job quite well too,
it has stronger shields and well placed utility slots for point defence.
Flying a FGS for Orbital strikes i recommend 2-4 Missilebays and 2 PDF on the sides for ease of disposal of goliath drones.

What would make it worth buying?

couple of things.

Either make it's SC maneuverability match its normal space maneuverability

or give it another internal, probably class 4, and buff it's base armor.

Yes, but the distributor is a class up which should not be ignored, particularly if you're running a rails or PAC heavy build.

The supercruise maneuverability is a joke and a bug, and it's pretty much the reason I don't fly it. The ship is literally broken because of a bug.

Eh. Coolness factor always wins out for me.

IMHO, right now... I'd pick the FdL over the GunShip any day.

I'm keeping mine in the dock though and will wait for the agility buff it'll supposedly get (read that they plan to up its agility to Dropship levels).
The day that happens, the GunShip will probably shine :)

Until that day... for me, it's plain too cumbersome when not in SuperCruise (where its agility is downright insane :D ... no way anything interdicts this Ship unless some bug hits during the Evasion ;) )
That kinda mirrors in the helpless NPCs flying it i.e. in a RES. Very easy target.

PS.
I've taken the Shipyard Description by the letter and have also flown it as a dedicated Support Ship in Wings.
It actually works fairly well as a Wingman with specialized Weapon loadout to complement a lead Ship with a more broad loadout.

I never bothered with the FGS because I'm a snob and it's ugly. Whereas the FdL is a sex machine. It has a huge hard point and when it comes right down to it - size matters.

So there you have it. FdL size of its guns and the swagger you carry it with.

Of course.. You have to know how to use it or you'll just be left unsatisfied.

How is it a joke? i know it's a bug but that maneuverability is top notch and that can definitely be worth it

I´d still like to have those two small hardpoints changed to medium hardpoints on FGS. It´s a gunship after all, give it bigger teeth. :)

FAS & FDL followed by the clipper are by far the best combat ships. Picking anything else would be a waste of money PVP wise.

FAS has the best agility, armor, hardpoints placement and is the cheapest. (best PVP ship in my opinion).
FDL has the best overall dps, max speed & acceleration, shields but terrible jump range and it's expensive.
Clipper has the best overall boost speed, second best armor & agility but has terrible hardpoints placement, second cheapest.
Python is just an overall terrible PVP ship only good in PVE. It's also the most expensive choice.

PVP stats that you need to take into consideration and have a major impact in PVP :

- Pitching speed (by far one the most important stats in PVP)
- Max speed & boost (second most important stats in PVP)
- Shields (if you are not silent running)
- Armor (if you are silent running)
- Max lock (if it's gank festival you need to lock and kill)

Often overlooked fact: the FGS is by far the best SC ship. Its insane. Mind-blowingly bizarrely so. It also has seven hardpoints. Go nuts. :p Comparing it to the FDL is fruitless, they are very different. In a 1v1 the FDL wins every time. I use my FGS in multi-role with focus on base attacks. My record is doing 4 base attacks in 12 minutes. Dont forget the FGS also will get a docking bay with 2.2! My FDL is used for assassinations: just go ape with rails and everything dies in seconds.

Inb4 nerf

From my personal experience:
PvE bounty hunting, CZ - FGS > FdL. Until FdL gets proper class 4 weapons FGS is more effective, more guns + hull tanking -> faster kills.
PvP - FdL > FGS. Gunship is just too slow.
