How do YOU land on planets?

Since there's been a highly entertaining thread about docking at stations (Green or Red side etc), I thought it'd be fun to have one for planetary landings too, so... how do YOU do it?

No polls... just tell your silliest planetary landing stories.

And I apologise to those who can't join due to lack of Horizons or the dreaded Curse of The XBone, but at least you'll see how not to do it while you wait for the Devs to get it sorted.
 
On ground stations : It's... acrobatic. I usually overshoot, go too fast... Ahem, let's say it's not optimised :)
On barren ground : I do the slow ground approach, with a little angle in [-5°;-15°] and when at a few hundred meters from the ground I deploy landing gear an hit the down thrusters. I only tried 3g at most.
 
Last night, while exploring a bit in the Pleiades Sector, i was mapping some HIP something system when i spotted a pretty 2,2g planet. "Lets land there and see if its still pretty up close."
I went a bit too fast, hit the silk hard and lost shields and 50% hull damage. Should have been a nice crater on that spot and pieces of a golden Asp scattered all around. But gamming realism saved me! Back to Obsidian Orbital for repairs!

Need to learn more about landing in high gs.
 
I like the way this is shaping up... I meant to say stations and remote land... so it's all good so far...
For the record, pythons don't bounce well... at least, it's not pretty from the inside.
 
When I had FFE I managed to get the Thargon Scout Ship. Landing with that was easy. Aim at the ground, gun it, and then, when you were close enough, lower the landing gear. If you were travelling slowly enough you would land, but if you were moving too fast you broke the planet.
 
About an hour ago, I did an upside down approach... I was coming in, saw a hollow and turned to track it... by the time I was pointing back to my pad I was upside down and way to close... Fortunately I was high enough to do an inside half loop and land, but the nose down part... in a python is disconcerting.
