Powerplay Cycle 43 PP Commentary

Well, you can't really stay out of PowerPlay if your home system becomes exploited or a control system. That being said, I don't know (or rather, remember) what the Cannon's home system is, so I can't say if it's ever been under "threat".

Actually you can rather easily avoid Powerplay completely.... dont pledge to a Power. Being exploited doesn't suddenly put you under the whip of some new master. The controlling faction doesn't change just because a Powerplay faction exploits or controls a system.

While technically true, this isn't necessarily how people will see it. If it's "your" system, then why does it say "exploited/controlled by someone else"? And with the passive effects that PowerPlay has, becoming controlled/exploited can make it harder for you to maintain control. Not to mention pride - if you're playing as someone who's proudly independent, why would you just sit back and accept that the Alliance/Empire/Federation gets to have a large amount of say in your area? Also, you're completely ignoring the fairly high likelihood that the power in question will want to flip the system in order to achieve a favourable trigger.

The idea that becoming part of a PowerPlay bubble is completely harmless to any and all player factions factions is incredibly naïve, and you're being disingenuous, because I know that you're not that naïve.

I was actually surprised that the Canonn got involved in Power Play with members chipping in to oppose Wadir. I thought the Canonn was neutral and researched based. Never mind eh. I hope they give Antal a hand in a possible expansion to Maia. Could be fun to hold and protect Maia for a couple of weeks. Anyone interested in taking part https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteAntal/ and player groups can relax it would just be a tempray thing like Takurua or the plague system. A bit of an adventure, not galactic conquest.
Not a coordinated Canonn event. I was made aware of the fact through Canonn channels. I do what I want and powerplayed a couple of days in Wadir. I don't care much about powerplay and would have opposed any faction, nothing personal as you say. I also found that I really suck at it ☺but fun to try something new. Perhaps I'll try some more when powerplay is fixed.
Perhaps I'll join Delaynee next. Now what political agenda would Ben be trying to promote with this? Layers within layers, dual layered tinfoil recommended.
Cheers
DZ

Yeah. A few memebers banded together which surprised me because I thought it was a PP neutral player group.

The cannon were involved, eh? That's another one on the list.

TL;DR We hate powerplay, not the powerplayers. We are fighting the mechanic, not you. We stand for galactic peace and organic lore, not the contrived and forced mess that is 1.3 if you take offense to our defiance of powerpants, youre looking for drama that isnt there. We have nothing against you or your fellow players. Take your drama some place else.

May I direct your attention to this thread, which shows that an overwhelming majority of this forum regard powerplay as a negative mechanic. In fact, during the recent youtube video featuring Ed & Sandy, they were cautiously reluctant and referred to powerplay as a work in progress. Even the devs are aware of how contrived the mechanic is. Near the end of the video, they briefly mentioned Freedom Fighters which is something many of us have been begging for, yet remains excluded from the game.

Why do we want Freedom Fighters? Because as an established minor faction built completely on player input we don't want some butt-hat Powerplay group coming in and invading our home with absolutely NO way of fighting it. The thing about powerplay is that it's based on a forced lore progression. We are sold 2d characters and told to love them, while they provide nothing but a grind with gameplay highly reminiscent of something from an App that you play on your phone. e.i. meaningless time sink, with micro transactions to speed up time.

In comparison to groups like Canonn, Mercs, and the Truckers, who have REAL back stories that actually happened, and player support from day 1, we have absolutely no defense against this meaningless and bland game mechanic that can roll into our ORGANICALLY made and fostered groups.

Right, rant over. I joined Canonn because I did not want to touch powerplay with a 10 foot pole, even if it had a spike on the end. Don't think of my involvenment with the Mercs was because I am Canonn, it's because I believe PP is god awful and I will fight it any time it tries to affect another ORGANICALLY made group that exists outside of PP.

I'm in Canonn because I want something real. Same reason I will fight powerplay. I'm not fighting powerplay because I'm Canonn. If you're looking for some epic revenge, or a tale of Canonn taking a stand against pirates or a nerd like parnav, look somewhere else. Don't turn this into something it's not.

Fully OOC, I don't like powerplay. If any power threatens a REAL, PLAYER ESTABLISHED minor faction, I will fight it as CMDR Derthek. No canonn involvement.

Power Play is the only interesting thing in Elite Dangerous, even if it is horribly flawed.

Remove that and there is nothing left.

Yeah?

My discord channel has 328 people, with 82 online right now. I actively remove members who are inactive for 30 days, and still maintain 300+ members. Our website alone has nearly 700 people registered. Everything our group has is because of the efforts of it's members. Social media, advertising, all that is done by us. We've been around since before 1.3 and by our sweat alone, we've risen to be one of the top groups and we have absolutely nothing to do with PP.

If you think we're going to lay down and accept powerplay into our homes, you're horribly mistaken. If you're unable to find joy in this game without powerplay, leave those of us who do like the game alone.

It's not as simple as 'don't pledge to a power' though is it?

Many Independent player factions rely on the BGS to manage and drive their story forward, and becoming a PP control system interferes and alters that, before we even get into the actual RP identity of the faction itself.

So don't be surprised when player factions band together to oppose power encroachment - the BGS is the meat and drink for many more players than PP players; and PP ruins it.

With regards to 'staying out of PP' and this idea that there's a walled garden for which if you don't buy your ticket, then you don't get to smell the flowers... Yeah, sorry: no.

Powers of course believe they have the right to expand to any and all systems they fancy, including player-faction-owned or supported independent system. Yeah okay - that's the definition of a power - no problem.

On the flip-side - those independent factions have a right to use whatever means available to prevent that encroachment to maintain their independence. It's no different to an Archon-pledged system, say, getting taken by another power.

Right now, the only means available is to jump into PP and work against the power doing prep or whatever. That will continue to happen across the PP bubble till the independents have a legitimate way to oppose powers without having to pledge.

Independent might mean 'no power' but that has equal status to those who do align to a power.

And if we have to accept the vapid game within a game that is PP, then the powers will have to accept that they're actually a minority, despite the pretty map.

This poll was taken nearly a month after powerplay, and ran for over 3 weeks. We are hardly the minority yet we are given no defense against the powerful small group that is "powerplay" which is basically a nuclear bomb on the BGS. We don't mess with you guys. Please stay out of our back yard.

Meanwhile, anyone who is participating in the PP understands that its contribution to story is non-existent.

Wadir is nowhere near your home system, but you still attacked us. You need to have some consistency.

Again, nothing to do with Canonn. You tried to tread on a non-powerplay group and we fought back. We're fighting powerplay, not you.

I'm going to make one thing perfectly clear here.

I, CMDR Derthek, acting outside of my role as the Canonn janitor, support any non-powerplay group. Do NOT bring the Canonn into this.

The bigger story maybe.

Independent groups like us work very hard for our story - and when a power comes waltzing in thinking there's nothing there and that it's actions have no consequences outside of PP, then they're wrong.

Again though - it's not the fault of the players playing PP, it is, as Derthek says, the fault of PP itself. It's inimicable to any form of RP outside of itself and in its current form makes no sense in the wider galaxy. I could be more explicit in my criticism of it, but it would be impossible to do so without denigrating the players who choose to take part in it, which is not what I want to do, nor how I actually feel.

I respect anyone who has passion for their chosen 'identity' in-game and the actions they pursue - it's just that PP doesn't take place inside a vacuum, if you'll pardon the space pun, despite all evidence to the contrary.

With a few changes PP could be fantastic and bring in many more players, though. But that's all been dealt with on other threads.

But actually to return to your point - obviously I'm interested in Galnet, and the idea that absolutely nothing power-based is allowed in Galnet is frankly ridiculous. For something that has its own special UI, and a significant amount of development time put into it, forcing all the power interplay down to numbers, pictures and out of game RP just doesn't do the players who take it seriously any justice whatsoever.

I try very hard to keep the Utopian RP alive, and so do many others. It's even got on Galnet a couple of times, which is quite gratifying.

When I write RP stories, I mainly target local news, as it gives a sense of place to what goes on in Power play. Galnet is not everything!

No you're right there - our site, like yours, or Reddit or wherever you do it, is full of loads more 'official' RP lore than you'll ever see on Galnet.

It's just for something that's so ostensibly 'important' as the struggle between these huge factions, the fact there is no big running story seems completely bonkers to me.

Anyway, sorry, totally hijacked there.

You seem really bent out of shape, please explain how playing PowerPlay effects this research group of yours?

The whole point of having a Player Minor Faction is to spread it enough for it to become the next Power. If you don't want to participate in PP, why do you have a PMF?

The story is the moves we make during Power play.

For example, Utopia recently shed some low performing systems, one of which is a deep RP system. Weeks before I seeded stories about what might happen, and when it was removed it became lore.

There will always be a hierarchy of stories, regardless of who tells them. The Canonn are right in the centre as you are prodding alien artefacts which are one of the pillars of the current story. Top tier BGS manipulation from Powers forms a backdrop to this, with groups flitting over and around BGS changes and player actions.

It mirrors everyday news: we see the horrors of war at the same time as local news, sometimes local news outshines foreign affairs.

For example,I watch my news, and the top story is about my country's vote on staying in the EU, and nothing about Putin or Obama, China etc.

Seeing a power's name on my system would break my heart. We own it, not some NPC. I run the discord, PG, and our Reddit. Not some NPC. I completely emphasizes with any minor faction that feels that threat from powerplay.

Do you want to know why I'm bent out of shape? We're powerless. You have no idea how frustrating it is take care of permissions on a website, discord, in-game private group, our reddit, and our endless google sheets. I dedicate at least 1 hour daily to Canonn related things before i ever get a chance to actually start playing the game. There was a time when I spent 6 hours sending messages to more than 100 people on this forum, with only 5 people per message, and 60 seconds between each message, to get the word out to my group. This was before we had teamspeak, a website, or discord. I would spend my lunches with a sandwich in 1 hand and my phone in the other.

So, yes. When I see another faction like Mercs, Truckers, or the commies being invaded by powerplay, I drop what I'm doing to help. There may be a day when Canonn needs help and it's important for us powerless factions (who make up a HUGE portion of the community) to stick together.

I'd be willing to bet I've put more time into my group than most powerplayers spend on theirs, and yet we're treated like second class. Once we get freedom fighters, the gloves are off.
