Request to unlock the Cobra mk4

I wish they would stop with the exclusivity deals. I would gladly share the mkiv I'd they would let me buy the Black Friday paint

The Black Friday paint was also a pre-order bonus. You should have access to both.

If they open up one, that opens a can of worms on people wanting them to unlock everything else.

Lol. The only thing that makes the Cobra Mk III fun to fly is its history as "The" ship from the original Elite. Aside from that its not particularly a great ship. The Cobra Mk IV has all the failings of the Mk III but none of the charm. It has no history. No gravitas. I own the Mk III for the sake of nostalgia. The Mk IV? Skip it. Save your money for an Asp.
Eh ...I know nothing of ED's history..I stumbled onto this game a month or two ago. The Cobra is by far my favorite small ship.

The problem boils down to this:
  1. This ship was sold exclusively.
  2. Unlocking it now would be a break of the exclusivity agreement.
  3. Despite it not being a great ship, it still is useful for a few tasks. Additionally, more than one ship which at some time was considered utterly worthless later on got some fans, so we can't tell if the Cobra MK IV will be well renowned or utterly forgotten in a few years.
  4. Thus effectively there is a ship with very specific profile, which is locked to a small group of players and can't be acquired any more.

The solution for that seems quite simple to me: The Cobra MK IV stays absolutely exclusive, but another ship producer, e.g. Zorgon Peterson, recognized a gap in this price and performance segment, providing a ship which is virtually the same. So it would have the same module slots, same mass, same speed, same agility, same hardpoits, even similarily placed. The huge difference would be that the seat would be on the right side and the ships hull would be of somewhat different shape, so it would warrant to be new ship.

Of course, people would start complaining about redundancy, but the given complaints could always he answered as "same ship, only different optics".

No. We allready have to many ships in the middle bracket competing with each other. Another clone is the last thing i want to see and i dont think i am the only one here. I agree with the people that say the exclusivity deals are bad. What i would like to see is more high tier ships (competition for the python) and true upgrades for the Trinity ships at the Top ('Conda, Corvette, Cutter).

I'm not fussed either way but I can see both sides of the argument

Making any ship exclusive was not a great idea, especially considering the effort in making it. But we are where we are and changing that may upset some people. I suppose they could call the current Mk IV the Mk IV A and retain it's exclusivity and then make a slightly tweaked MK IV B for general release, though I'm sure some people on both sides of the argument would still be unhappy.

Note to FD. If you want to make exclusive rewards for pre-ordering in the future please just keep to cosmetic items

After advertising the Cobra 4 availability as an exclusive reward it would probably not be a very nice thing to go back on their word.

That being said, I'm perfectly fine either way.

Well, on that matter I value fairness above keeping one's word, plus for me it was never a "promise of exclusivity" but more like a "threat of exclusivity", so changing their minds on would for me always be a positive thing not a "broken promise" but withdrawing a thread.

I like to rationalize behavior and opinion so I can pretend I'm principled but really just do whatever the hell I want when I feel like it too.

If what FD had marketed was objectively wrong or they simply can't maintain their position (2.1 release date)then sure, change the behavior, but it wasnt by any stretch of any imagination wrong (unless pretending like you think it was makes you feel better) so shouldn't be changed. They'd be doing more damage to their relationship with their playerbase because we'd immediately come to the conclusion that whatever they said is and they'll just flip flop on it whenever popular opinion or the farcicle "greater good" of the community demands it.

If they want to release timed exclusives, by all means, go for it. This wasn't a timed exclusive though and shouldn't be treated as such.

I for one would be happy if the Cobra MkIV would be made available under certain conditions (next season pass preorder or whatever)

I'm more than happy to give each and every ship a chance.
Doing so makes me experience all the effort the development team has put into these ships.
I personally don't care if ship x is better than y for doing z.

When piloting ships in elite you're in for one hell of a ride,
sporting a very potent sound system I'm always amazed how one can actually 'feel' the ship.

Be it the WWII sound of the asp, the majestic organic sound of the T-9 Heavy or
the incredible noise the Imperial Clipper is making when boosting, it's like a thousand imperial slave souls are screaming in agony.

It's a pity missing out on even one of these occasions.

Don't care if they unlock all the old goodies by various routes for players; it breaks nothing except the idea of holding onto a silly decision just because you made it. "Exclusive" is a stupid concept for an entirely digital product with a multiple-year development time attempting to support itself by extra purchases; the more of these goodies and packages there are the better the cash flow. I will gladly let people buy RetroCobra wireframes because it's smart business; it doesn't make mine any less cool because somebody brand new to the game could suddenly get one, unless I'm deriving that coolness from how awesome it is that nobody else can have it.

From the company's perspective, Frontier is going to make people angry one way or the other, so it makes sense for them to pick the way that makes the most monies. It's stupid to stick to your guns if some other set of guns is way more useful; that's not noble or worthy of respect, that's just sheer bullheadedness.

I think I used to have a different opinion back in the day about word-keeping and all that, but content is content, and content keeps games alive. Make it available by play or purchase or intermittent availability windows or silly contests or whatever, so everyone has a few chances to kick at the can. Crying over pixel exclusivity seems petty and selfish and if I did it before then tell past me he had a poor framing of the situation.

Just to make sure I've not missed the point, are you saying that exclusivity and locking out content from those that don't purchase at a specific time is a good thing?

But it was exactly that?

For a limited time all existing Elite Dangerous players will receive a £10 loyalty discount plus the exclusive Cobra Mark IV ship when ordering the Elite Dangerous: Horizons through the Frontier Store. Discount will be automatically applied at checkout. Those who take advantage of this offer will be able to purchase the Cobra MkIV in-game when Elite Dangerous: Horizons lands.

Personally I'm not a fan of exclusives, and they seem rather counter productive to me when it's something like a ship. Add a few skins or decals to commemorate something, well no great loss to anyone who misses out, but otherwise a 'nice to have'. And it seems a bit daft to throw in a high production-cost item when you don't really need to; I doubt anyone actually bought the Horizons upgrade for the ship?

Another example - recently they had the DB bobble head in the store and again only for a limited time. I don't really get the thinking on that. If people want to buy it, then they will do. And no one else can see who has one, so what's the point of making it exclusive? Once you do make it exclusive, and market it that way, well that then stops any future sales to people coming into the game. Makes no sense at all to me! [wacko]

Well since I don't consider the Cobra MK IV a ship but rather a giant paperweight with guns on it, I'd rather not have the thing be exclusive. FD might actually buff it if everyone could fly it.

That said, not gonna happen. Shame I can't give my right to fly it away to some poor soul that might like it. Cause I sure don't.

I feel the same as the second poster here. Principle needs to be maintained otherwise it removes incentive.

One thing I do worry about though, is if there are more exclusives, and I have the Lifetime expansion pass... I kind of feel like I should get them, as I have pre-ordered everything ever. I bought my lifetime expansion pass when horizons was up for pre-order, some people had one from before then.

Did (Original) Life time expansion pass people get the cobra mark 4?

Ask yourself two questions:

What does FD have to gain by making the Cobra Mk 4 available to everyone?

What does FD have to lose by making the Cobra Mk 4 available to everyone?

Once you've worked out the answers to these questions you'll understand why FD won't make it available to everyone.

FD changed their minds once on how you could get the cobra 4, it was never a pre order exclusive until well after horizons was released when it all of a sudden became upgrade before whenever to gain access. wouldnt be surprised if FD changed their minds again at some point in the future

It was an exclusive. I've quoted the text from the store here.

If you need more proof, read the Horizons announcement post from David Braben: https://community.elitedangerous.com/node/247
Elite Dangerous: Horizons will be available to pre-order on our store today, and I’m very happy to announce all existing Elite Dangerous players will receive a £10 loyalty discount off the Horizons retail price. Existing players will also unlock the exclusive Cobra Mk IV ship in Elite Dangerous: Horizons. The Cobra Mk IV will be available in the game only to players who joined us in the first year – forever. It’s our ‘thank you’ for your faith in the game, and you’ll see more of the Cobra Mk IV in Friday’s Peek Of The Week.

It was a thank-you to existing season 1 owners who pre-ordered horizons.

Wasn't the MkIV always a bit of a dog? I thought in lore it was the reason there's no MkV and they went onto other models
