My assumption was that they would be little die-cast models a la minatures, not the big models that were offered on the old store but I do take your point of course!

I like the idea of selling extra commander slots. I'm not an alto-holic so it wouldn't bother me much but some people love that stuff.

Okay then:

MT based:

Name stars
  • Non core £1 each. (There are 400 billion !)
  • Core £10

Name systems
  • Non core £5 each
  • Core £50 each

For both a certificate to authenticate your name rights £5 or £30 framed.

I'd squeeze moons, asteroid fields, and comets in there too and price them accordingly.

I would also price worlds differently based on if its life-bearing or just a dead iceball. Life-bearing worlds could hold more prestige as more people may want to visit them. Life-bearing worlds that have intelligent life (if there is any out there) should be off limits to naming rights though as the inhabitants probably have their own name for their world anyway :D

I think the more variety and scope added, the more appeal it has to a wider consumer market.

The only difficulty I can see, and this would compound the issue, is one of memory requirements. Procedurally naming a system based upon location is one thing - it's a formula for which you only need to store a few variables and the generation is calculated at the time its needed.

Personally I can't see post release the naming of anything, but if FD are going to overlay the KS names into the game database then maybe they could up the price and limit the numbers (human psychology in action again :D)

Good idea. A little bobble-head of the Emperor! Tastefully done of course.

Yeah, that "name a star for a £1" idea is beginning to chafe. ;)

Different coloured laser beams ranging from £1 up to £500 for purple :D

Name change £10

Avatar change £5

Non MT:
More variety of TShirts - existing one with humongous logo is dreadful. £25
Möbius inspired cup (The black one) £20, £100 for set of 6
Mouse mat - couple of varieties of logo - £5 up to say £50 for a Razor style special non slip version

Think naming things is a brilliant idea obviously as long as the process is strictly over sighted and has certain naming rules. Those prices ... Some look about right too, maybe a bit pricey in others but i think it would be a great way to monetize the game in a way that doesn't give anyone an in game advantage whatsoever.

This is true. I guess it depends on how popular it is. Even if it was the Frontier stores' biggest seller week after week there's no way even a fraction of what's out there could be named. Maybe a few million at most over the games lifetime? I don't think that would be too hard to store and implement via regular updated content patches. And even a few million name sales could represent 10s of millions of revenue for FD.

Yeah, that "name a star for a £1" idea is beginning to chafe. ;)

Agreed. Keeping the prices moderate will encourage some thought behind why you want to do it and what name you want to suggest. A quid a pop will have FD swamped with silly off the cuff requests imo.

This was suggested months back:

Name an asteroid belt for £10
Name a comet for £20
Name a colony for £30
Name a moon for £50

Maybe a bit too high though. If FD want it I'm sure they will figure out a balanced price tier that appeals to all.

Elite themed Thrustmaster Warthog joystick, with Frontier designed (or approved) labels and button names.

normal retail plus 10%

If FD could get the IAU onboard, we could officially name Astro bodies for real and get a certificate from the international astronomical union. the only official astronomical naming group. http://www.iau.org/
For an additional price

+1 for this (polo shirt request). I wear a fair few polo shirts.

If a logo could be stitched instead of a transfer I would been more interested and would buy a couple.

Yes, please. In a sturdy cotton twill with a small embroidered logo - big logos don't work with polo shirt necks unless you want a Cobra plastered across your belly!

I am not against in-game MT so long as it is restricted to cosmetic, as opposed to competitive, enhancements. So fluffy dice, custom paint jobs, bobbleheads - fine; purchase of credits (or anything credits can buy) - no.

As regards naming rights, remember that KS backers paid a minimum uplift of £200/450 on top of design forum membership for station and planetary naming rights. If FD do the right thing by the 278 people (Disclaimer: I am not one of them) who were prepared to put up the money from the outset then any equivalent in-game naming rights should be equally, if not more, expensive. However, and this is slightly off-topic I know, I do think that there might be scope for explorers who spend a lot of time outside known space getting some acknowledgement from the guild - perhaps a one-off right to name a planet after, say, a thousand "first to report" discoveries.

Even if astronomical naming rights are off the table, don't forget that the planetary landing pack will need city names. Also, I for one wouldn't mind stalking a Googol's Beast if FD can sell me a hunting permit :D.

My 2d.

I don't hate this idea, but I think it should only be available if you have actually discovered the star, planet, system etc. This is something one of the dev team hinted may be possible.

Yes - that is what I meant.

  • You discover a new planet that has a default name (as per procedural gen)
  • You scan it, do whatever, and fill up your data stick
  • Once you return it to a core world and upload you receive a ticket. (Thinking the MT thread here from DDF ;))
  • You can cash that ticket in at the MT shop to name the planet you found.

Obviously not everyone is going to do this and it could very well be an admin nightmare for FD, but if it's priced right it could trickle funds in and give the players a sense of making a difference.
