Summary of tonight's ED On the Horizion/Engineers Beta Part 1 stream

No yeah.

I'm guessing it's unfinished. Recoil is feasible I think, I mean like Babylon 5's lasers used to recoil, but out of sync is just odd.

Maybe it's just a repurposed huge cannon model at this point. Either way I love that it's a gatling laser type thing. :)
Lasers have force, but not likely enough to have visible recoil. Just the 'rule of cool'. Could be a heat management thing or some resetting of a component.

Lasers can propel a ship with a light sail, just as photons from the solar wind. Just the sail is huge and the force is tiny.

Maybe I missed it on the list, but MB also mentioned that terrain texture quality has been improved AND with faster performance for 2.1. I think that's pretty big! :)

I suspect everything regarding planets has been updated. XBO manager also said their version textures has been improved too. Consider last update on this where 6 months ago. So I suspect it is huge list of small and big tweaks and improvements to make game better and perform better. This is my top reason to load ED beta, even more so than other features.

Healing beam gives me a laugh, it reminds me of the way energy beams were drawn in the '50's sci fi.

Did the lasers in B5 produce recoil, or the non laser weapons that recoiled, as the beams never seemed to produce recoil, but the pulse cannons, interceptors and such which weren't laser, did recoil.

and yes, the Gatling Laser was a great choice, a nice military vs civilian look when compared to the mining laser

I really love the new outfitting screen! So much information! (I guess, most of the text was a mock-up due to the developer-build, as it mostly seemed to be in the wrong category?)

One request and a proposal:

1) Please, try to move the 'jump range information' under the other stats at the left!
It really doesn't belong where it is now (in the middle) and looks somehow misplaced there (as if it didn't fit anymore at its intended place and was just put to a leftover free place.) Maybe re-arrange the whole information. 'Balance' and 'Insurance cost' would fit under SHIP SPEC, for example. The 'power' section could move right and hence free the middle for the complete stats column (including the jump-range information, which would then stay where it is now).

2) Please consider to replace the notation "Loss" when purchasing equipment.
Sure, technically it is correct - you lose money due to the purchase, your balance is reduced. However, the term is is very misleading and asks for misunderstanding. What about 'cost difference', 'net cost', 'cost (adjusted)' or even simply 'cost' (and just passing over the re-purchase of the existing equipment)?

Anyway. Nice live stream! I am looking forward to the newsletter tomorrow and of course to the launch of 2.1!

The C4 Beam should spin instead of recoil.

Gatling Guns that don't have rotary action are goofy looking.

Looks like a solid update so far, but not really anything breathtaking. Kinda wish we'd get access to more planet surfaces, like worlds with volatile and non-life-supporting atmospheres.

Don't have time to watch the stream, so thanks for the summary!

Someone on the reddit said that modules won't be sold for 100% of the cost anymore in 2.1. Is this true? Can someone who saw the stream confirm/deny this? With the new huge weapons coming I'm going to be doing lots of experimenting with outfitting, and this would really put a downer on an otherwise great update...

Edit: Unless of course they were to announce module storage tomorrow. Would make sense to introduce that alongside the engineers update. I still like the current system better, but with module storage available I could more easily stomach a 10% loss on selling.

  • Bookmarks. A "quality of life" improvement. Select system, edit name, done. Simple and effective.

I really hope they are more than what's shown - so far it looks like a random/unordered list of names/icons. This is useful with 10-15 bookmarks but will quickly become hard to use. Especially since the bookmarks don't show up on the galaxy map (why?).

IMHO they need to at the very least be sortable by distance from the current position, so you can more easily find stuff. Alphabetical is nice sometimes, but for most day-to-day use, it's not optimal. It's not even clear if there's any sorting at all though.

Also show the closest N bookmarks in the left panel navigation panel so we can do trade routes and such without opening the galaxy map at all please!

IIRC we're supposed to see Volcanic planets before the end of Horizons, which would presumably entail at least thin atmospheres. I doubt we'll get anything with heavier or more dynamic atmospheres. Really hoping Volcanics will be revealed tomorrow.

Michael said that modules have always sold at a loss, which we all know is incorrect. Considering what happened when they last tried to add a 10% loss on sale in beta, I suspect we'll NOT see that re-added (and if they do, without adding module storage, expect the same storm of comments).

Why would it spin though? It's not chambering a round or anything. I like the non-spin, myself. :)

Accuracy. If the beams are coming from the same point they are going to be more accurate than if they are firing from multiple locations. The extra barrels are probably extra collimators that would overheat in short order if the huge beam laser were to sustain fire through a single one for too long.

Overheating could be the exact reason when your trying to force a coherent beam of light through a lense to focus it enough for it to do damage to a solid material. Why make a bigger one thats going to require more power, and probably twice as much coolant, when you could just make a cycling weapon that would only require the same amount of coolant and run off the same amount of power. However, wheres the sense of it doing more damage when the beam laser is a consistent DPS weapon.
