In these 2.1 times we are all awaiting the 2.1 beta. Its amazing what a fine job Frontier has done with this update. It addresses so many important aspects of the game. Both adding content, improving AI and removing bugs. Even giving missiles a boost. I am looking forward getting into the cockpit again.
So why not speculate what the next BIG expansion will be, we do like to speculate :)

My list goes like this:

1: Adding 1.person interaction and walking. We all know this can be done, Star Citizen is doing it.
-With this comes the opportunity to make persistent NPCs, as a minor update. Although this can still be added with persistent NPCs flying ships.
-First person missions

2: Landing on planets with atmospheres. Frontier has already given us landing on planets without atmospheres and it feels and looks very good. So this can be done to.
-With this comes the option to do something under water, a big task, but I hope we will see this in the future.

3: Building of some sort of bases. Frontier is already looking into this with adding crafting and loot. To make us influence the game world and manufacture/create stuff which can be persistent.
- With this comes the gem in gaming. Adding cohesion, agency and persistence. Which many games are working with right now ARK, Rust and H1Z1. Creating stuff and a primitive base.

I feel these are the 3 big ones. And everything else is updates to these expansions in some way.

So now is the question which one should come first after Horizons?

I would go so far as to add 1.person interaction is some way first, then try to create 1 type of atmospheric planet to land on, and with time do them all like this. So landing on atmospheric planets can be done not with a big expansion but with updates as I think its a very big task to add all atmospheric planets in one go. Like be able to land on volcanic planets first, then nitrogen and so fort. Maybe even earth likes first. Then be able to build a base of some sort when 1.person interaction is in the game.

I will add a poll which where we can vote on what we the commanders want to see first. Just to give Frontier a hint what we think. I will also add some sought after updates. Which have not been mentioned coming in this season pass. Remember this is speculations, but do reflect the wishes of us commanders.

My money is on first person for season 3.. seems the logical step imo, starting with legs on ships and stations, and progressing throughout the season to incorporate eva's and planetside activities (hopefully) :)

In my opinion, landing on planets with atmosphere, terran planets etc should come before anything else. Especially before the "walking around" part which looks like tremendous work for little actual benefit.

Have everything crossed for having a walk around my Python, want to see what the bathroom looks like in this century

Then NPC wingmen, pretty please!!!!

Can't vote. ;)

Will probably be the ability to move around inside ships in first person, your own and the ability to board others later in that season. Maybe space EVAs too. I don't expect station interiors though...too much to get done in to short of a time, both in regards to the actual interiors themselves, but also when it comes to all of the NPCs. Being able to interact with passengers inside your ships sometime during season 3 might be possible as a testbed for future developments.

Season three might also give us access to some sort of atmospheric worlds too...most likely rocky ones (Mars/Venus/Titan-like). This is very much an extension on the planetary gameplay we already have with some new environments to explore. It's not going to be a completely new thing as first person activities. Depending on how that is done this might also give us gas giants of the same atmosphere tech is adaptable enough to give us these too (I'm hoping that's the plan), but gas giants might require more specialized code and then they might come later.

Earthlike planets with life (if that is what you mean with terran) is not coming next season. THAT is a tremendous amount of work if anything. ;) FD would have to have a huge ace in their sleeve if they managed to pull that off.

If it's not "earthlikes" you are reffering too, but instead Mars/Venus/Titan-like planets, then what is it you think these would add that would be more beneficial compared to "walking around". New vistas too look at? Sure! But in terms of gameplay they would probably be more or less what we already have in Horizons. You driving a SRV around on them trading, finding materials/POIs and interacting with settlements and bases of different sorts.

The ability to get out of that pilot seat would open up far more gameplay opportunities IMO and before anyone says: "But what would you do?!" please keep in mind that the huge majority of all games made are centered around you controlling a charterer "walking around". What is it you do in all other games? There is no lack of things you could come up with...it's just a question how well it's done. ;)

Us getting multi crew, passengers and later the character creator this season strongly suggests we will be leaving the pilot seat next season. It would also mean that all "modes of travel" and "detail levels" would be covered by then. From that point on it will be about giving access to more and more environments for us to play around in.

Landing on planets with atmosphere's is what I would like, walking around another 3d environment is not appealing to me at all. As for updates, has to be the final completion of wings to bring a bit of balanced game-play to those who fly either solo or do not use the game as a social network.

I'd speculate base building. Why? Because it's the easiest one to do (the have the assets, look at the Engineers screenshots in the last newsletter). I have a feeling that neither planets with atmosphere nor first person will be ready by holiday season 2016.

Your guess is their next step is the one thing they said they'd not do at all?

Anyway, my guess would be ship walking for s3.

If by big expansion you mean 3.0, I predict Thargoids.

They're an easy idea to sell for Christmas joy, and most of the necessary mechanics are arguably already in the game, which allows quite a bit of 'value add' to be bundled up with them thar pesky aliens to make it an appealing offering.

The next big expansion. What should it be?

Should?
No idea. FD should do what they feel is necessary and feasible.

In the short term I want not a big expansion, but winging up with NPC and NPC crewmembers.
It would be cool if the addition of Wings and MultiCrew would become useful to a soloist (even though I do play mostly in Open) like me too.
And I bet I am not the only one who currently has little use for Wings and Multicrew if they are only implemented for the multiplayer part of the game.

I'm dying to see FD implement volcanism.
Not because I think it will bring new gameplay, but because it will be an important new step in the simulation of the ED universe.
It will make some of the planets come alive, animated. I think that is huge.

I'd like walking around even if it has no utility. Walking around my ships or standing outside of my SRV on a planet is simply cool.

First person interaction is highly sought after I see. I can understand this as Tinman said, it opens up for a lot of new game play mechanics. Just being able to create your own unique looking commander and walk around the ship would be fantastic. And I guess we will see this as character creation and multi crew arrives. With this I also hope they can implement a room/bar on stations where you can meet other commanders and maybe have data screens where you can buy commodities and take on missions. And I would like to see missions where you can cooperate and share between commanders. So you can actually do them together and share credits and reputation, maybe even get more credit, rep, materials or loot when you do it together, so multi playing is rewarded in some sort of sense. So it will benefit to hang around "the room" lets call it bar. And chat with people, team up and share missions. When you land you can choose to enter the bar if you want or not. Just this single interactive room where you can share missions and chat with other commanders will benefit all commanders and Frontier to. A new level of interaction will begin. I selected 1 person interaction and building a base. Although I certainly do wish for planetary landings on planets with atmospheres to. There so much that can be added to build on the game. And make it better. Although this is speculations, but I recon we will hear about the next big expansion in juli/august as last year. So the season pass 3 will build on the next big expansion.
Persistent NPCs and wing men is something that will lift this game up to. Thargoids is something I wish to see. Maybe they already are out there :p I think 2.1 will get many of us veterans back into the cockpit again and set the standard for rest of the season and next years expansion. I know its early to speculate of the next expansion, and if we get one. But I recon we do, because Frontier can and want to add to the experience of E.D. To be the best space game it can be.

NPC wingmen and space legs are the big ones.

Atmosphere landing - I don't expect it will be any good, so hold onto that.

Building any real estate - that should be dead last on any list.

And non-NPC multicrew - please just drop it. It can only be either no fun or ridiculously OP.

The biggest though: SHIP NAMES !!!1! For Christs sake!

I agree about ship names. It should be fairly easy to implement. I don´t understand why this isn´t introduced yet. Its just naming your ship. How hard can it be? Then people can actually make a clan tag to if they wish to show others they are in a clan/group/minor faction. I hope it will come in 2.1 :) Or at least this season.

If done right, it'll open up some interesting avenues to explore but it isn't going to be the massive gamechanger that'll somehow turn Elite: Dangerous into a game that isn't Elite: Dangerous. Those who didn't like it before will continue... not liking it.

Building bases sounds unbelievably boring, expensive, and pointless. The sums of money needed will just open up a chorus of "grind" complaints. Renting a place in existing stations to store modules and cargo sounds doable.

ED : "Internals" is (or at least was) the plan for Season 3 (linky-poos). Needs a huge amount of work for it to be playable & rewarding, but I can't wait. That's when I'll be buying a VR headset.

So much is being packed into 2.1 now that I'm wondering how much we're actually going to see during Season 2, never mind Seasons 3-7. How many headline features are left?!?

I voted for first person interaction. It has always been my intention to buy every expansion, however, if it does turn out to be this feature, I might skip this one & buy the subsequent season! I didn't get Elite to do that..& pls just tell me there won't be a weird, creepy cmdr dancefloor, like a certain game that shall remain nameless! :p

Most likely : person interaction and walking around ships, stations and planets. Spacewalking.

And Update becaue i NEED it : adding being able to hire wingmen as escort on missions or just to tag along for protection/companionship

From my opinion you have to "separate" Atmospheric landing :

  1. Gas Giant flying : Volumetric Procedural Clouds + Lightning + Atmosphere Entry + Scooping, because no ground to handle.
  2. Atmospheric Landing on "simple" planets : No life, Planet surfaces similar to actual Horizons planets, Weather system, Erosion (to change terrain), Liquid (Methan ocean, Water, and so on) : more complex to develop
  3. Atmospheric Landing on "complex planets : Life, Gameplay (hunting), Vegetation, Grass, and other complex system (VERY Late in Elite Roadmap) : Earth Like world, Aquatic World, Amonia World.
