Thinking of cancelling my CV1 and getting a VIVE.. advice please.

Hi

I notice slopey is having trouble with ED on his VIVE.
I cant justify 2 HMDs however the more i think about it the more i think the vive may be a better fit for me....

has anyone managed to get a great experience of ED in the vive or is it inherently broken? ED is a big part of VR for me, however full room is interestig me more and more, and the more i read about it, the more i worry that even with touch, full room may not be something oculus really promote.

thanks

I've not got mine yet (ordered both) but there's a known issue that means ED is displaying way below the Vive's possible resolution. That will, without doubt, be temporary.

Would I advise stopping your CV1 order though - no way the resale value will be 100% cost or possibly more if you're very careful with it. Someone with enough money will undoubtedly pay top $ to jump a 3 month wait.

The Vive's pros appear to be controllers and movement. Got to say I'm really looking forward to walking round the deck of the bigger ships when I get mine but from an ED point of view that's about it at the moment. Can't see the controllers making a huge difference for Elite either.

stick with the cv1, why put so much money on something that might get fixed when you already have an order for something that is known to work well in ED.
roomscale may or may not be a thing, all i see right now are fairly gimmicky tech demos - "job simulator" for christ sake. whats next, pretentious starbucks simulator only £29.99!
room tracking on the cv1 seems decent enough anyhow.
i had a may vive order but cancelled that for a cv1 in august thanks to slopeys reviews.
also if you have young children think of all them vive cables, my daughter is 1 and has just "gone roomscale" herself and everything gets pulled apart. moving the pc to the living room is a big no.

CV1 is great.. no regrets cancelling my Vive order, for me it was the right decision.

Comfort, headphones and generally more polished product. VS roomscale which i dont want anyway as dont have room and like to play seated on my posterior.

I'd always go with what's working now, which is the Rift. It's also more comfortable and light apparently - better for longer sessions in space.

I also have a CV1 on order and know what I want to play on it. That would be ED and Project CARS. Both of these work VERY well at the moment judging by all the comments from people who have CV1's. A friend of mine at work has a Vive on order, but doesn't know what he's going to play on it. I find this a bit strange. He's not into flying or driving games, and the 'room scale' games aren't really here yet, or at least they're not that great (Job Simulator for example).

The Touch controllers will be here later in the year and with a second sensor will allow for a larger 'room scale' play area than is currently possible with just the one sensor. Yes, the Vive is more capable in this area, but as there isn't much in the way of content to take advantage of it, this isn't a big issue for me. Also, I don't have a large space in which to use room scale, so this is also a moot point for me.

As someone else mentioned, the CV1 has decent headphones built in. The rift has one cable running to the HMD, while the Vive has four. It looks a bit bulky when compared to the sleek Rift.

They are both great HMDs, but I think that content currently means that the Vive's biggest selling points are not being taken advantage of.

One final thing. Asynchronous Time Warp. I think this is a great feature for the Rift. I can imagine that the Vive will get this feature down the line though - it just makes sense to have it.

Honestly guys you sound like caveman extolling the virtues of square wheels... while modern man is going by on his "new" cart.

Having owned a DK2 for 18 months the Vive was the next logical step as I didn't want a polished DK2 with more comfort, room scale is so much more than job simulator which is great fun anyway,
I've been having totally new VR experiences in games like hover junkers vanishing realms modbox budget cuts and the gallery to name a few.. while being totally immersed (I defy anyone trying Audioshield not to come out grinning like a loon :) ) so much so I've had very little time for ED which is a shame but will get back on it once the bugs with the Vive are ironed out DCS world is incredible in cockpit far better than ED atm (demoed ED in the Vive at EGX on a Vive DK1 and it looked far better from memory).

All I'm saying is you would have to be crazy/uninformed IMO to give up perfect (for me so far) room scale and seated tracking for a little a bit of comfort/lightness, fitted right with the strap low on the back of your head the Vive so been very comfortable for me its better than the Rift DK2 IMO.

Mark my words when the touch controllers are released it will be the the best thing since sliced bread and OP yes I would keep the rift and get the Vive too and make your own mind up. (can always sell the one you dont like)

But if I had to choose though I'd personally go with the Vive its a pretty much a holodeck :D

Just for the record its 3 cables not 4 the forth is the headset cable which doesn't go the the breakout box and the vive cable is heavy duty for a reason as room scale kinda makes people go nuts and really have fun so its got to be up to the job of lasting the lifetime of the HMD.

PS.. Im not posting to bash the Rift i'm sure its a great piece of kit if all you want is seated VR but it doesn't change the fact that ATM without touch it has square wheels.

PPS anyone with a Vive try this out with the supplied IEM's https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4eemqq/an_even_better_earbud_wire_routing/

This is pretty much what I'd recommend if you can afford it. Given the wait time in these early days I doubt you'd have any trouble selling the unit you don't want and you're not likely to lose much money on it - may even gain some as I said.

Vive is a huge hassle trust me. Only when it's become wireless will this "holodeck" experience become mainstream. In the meantime just novelty. I'd stick with the CV1

I own the Vive and it works great. I fly the Lakon 6 and there is nothing like standing up on your bridge and looking through the cockpit. The resolution on the text at a distance is a bit weird but otherwise it is an awesome experience that really makes you feel like you are flying the ship. BTW, ED works right away with the Vive. I just launched it from Steam.

Sadly for me, the wires with room scale VR are a showstopper - much as I want it. Too much of a potential trip/fall hazard, and due to various medical reasons, if I fall wrong then it's off in an ambulance for me :(

So purely as a seated/standing still unit, I went for the Rift and so far I've been very happy with the quality - putting it on for the first time felt like a repeat of the "Wow!" moment when I first experienced the DK2.

Odd there are a lot people comparing the two and noticing a big difference between the Vive and the Rift. Doesn't bother me as it has to be bug that'll get fixed but is this the first VR headset you've owned? Do you have anything to compare it to?

I've ordered both but they're a way off, just curious in case you've managed to setup your Vive differently.

I went with the CV1 rift as well, but if I wanted to do room scale, I would go with some kind of ceiling mounted swivel to hold the cords so I wouldn't have to worry about a tripping hazard.

I guess that could be a possible solution, I just tend to play things on the side of extreme caution and avoid risk as much as possible. People without my levels of breakability shouldn't be discouraged as much.

As it is though, right now, most of my VR happens to be bed based VR, but I'm hoping by the time second gen room scale arrives, I'll be more able to take full advantage of it.

I've got a Vive already and a CV1 on order. The Vive is not as comfortable as the DK2. It looks a little bit better in game, than the DK2, but isn't as smooth (ATW?). I'm sure both those issues will be sorted when the Vive resolution issue is fixed and when they Reprojection working better. That said, the Vive isn't going to get any lighter.

I'm still using the DK2 for Elite in the Office, and have the Vive setup in the next room (spare bedroom) using a wall port.

Room Scale is a blast, and if that's you're priority get the Vive. If you plan to spend most of you're time in Elite or other seated experiences, I'd suggest going with the Rift and waiting for the Touch controllers. Valve said they'll support them for Room Scale with Chaperone when they come out (you'll likely need a USB extension cable or two for the cameras).

Of course getting both and selling (for a profit) the one you like least is always an option, but could be a hassle.

Seems like the advice from the crowd is unanimous.

If the CV1 is going to drop through your letterbox within a week or so then you could sell it at a profit.

But if you have to wait like me until August <sigh> then there's no point in cancelling the order yet. You can hold off and see what difference any patches make to the performance of the VIVE.

^^ This.

Room scale is really really good - if you have a) the space for it, and b) you want it. But if you want seated experiences, and mostly ED, the Rift is where it's at for comfort, fidelity, and ease of use.

They're very very different devices once you get used to them. I love the Rift as I can whip stuff up in Unity and use it, take it on/off with ease, wear it for hours, and play ED until my eyeballs fall out.

I also like the Vive for the Room Scale - Space Pirate Trainer being my favourite so far (Hoverjunkers isn't that great given the price) - but it's uncomfortable, heavier and imho it doesn't suit seated because of that. Room scale you're not so bothered, and most of the experiences are quite short, but sitting for hours with it on? No thanks.

So - short answer - get both!

I'm lucky enough to have both on order and i also currently own a DK2. Initially, after much deliberation, i went for the Vive as i already had the DK2/1.3 experience and really wanted to be on the bleeding edge and try room scale and tracked hand controllers, but in the end decided to also plump for the CV1. I can always sell one later if need be.

I'd say the one thing CV1 has going for it is much better underlying software/drivers and ATW really makes the Elite experience something else. Valve are playing catchup in this department and we're still to see a good implementation of ATW for the Vive. As for the visuals, we def need to wait on FD to get back to us on why it looks a little odd on the Vive at the moment. Let's hope it's addressed in the 2.1 update.

Here is a really nice comparison of the two headsets and he shows off quite a bit of Elite for comparison. He also has a little to be said on perceived scale between the two. Anyone else noticing this?

Since we've delved into Room Scale, I'll use that as an excuse to mention my 3 favorite games on Vive.

These first two are pretty short adventure / puzzle games (maybe 2-3 hours each), but so much fun. Both are the first episodes / chapters.

Vanishing Realms, which is described as a first person Legend of Zelda. Somewhat cartoony looking, but a fun dungeon crawler. Love the first person melee combat with swords (I usually go double sword - as shields or for wusses).

Call of the Starseed: The Gallery Part I, is like being in an 80s kids/teen adventure film. Reminds me most of "The Goonies" and "Explorers." The best looking game on Vive.

Fantastic Contraption is a very whimsical physics puzzle game. This one has taken up far most (13 hours, which is a lot for a game that isn't Elite). Great trailers using "mixed reality." I'm at puzzle 42 out of 60 (I think). So satisfying when you build a contraption and it works on the first go.
