Anaconda Troubles

Hi everyone!

So after many, many Robigo mines trading runs, I finally was able to purchase myself an Anaconda! I went into outfitting, slapped on a few weapons, a better FSD, Shield Gen, Thrusters, and a fuel scoop. I launched and started making my way back to my home system (LTT 15574). I stopped at a nearby system where I began to fuel scoop a sun. I was suddenly interdicted by a CMDR in a Vulture. Doing the math in my head.. A CMDR with a 5,000,000 credit ship.. Versus me in a 146,000,000 credit ship.. I liked those odds! Smug, I submitted to the interdiction, and the CMDR began firing at me. I was extremely surprised to what happened.. My shields went down in a matter of 5 seconds, and my hull was taking serious damage.. My guns seemed useless against this god-like ship, and I wasn't even able to break his first shield layer.. Starting to panic, I then retracted my hardpoints, and warmed up my FSD. I was already down to 70% hull until my ship was finally able to make the jump out of the system. After that, I safely made it back to LTT 15574, but extremely confused.. How was this Vulture able to do this?

Thanks for the help!

That kind of thread again, sigh....

Sounds like decent Vulture Cmdr vs greenhorn Anaconda.... and obviously Vulture had upper hand... Well, dont ever underestimate smaller ships, just becasue they cost less than your own... Okay, I give you a credit... After all, you where flyin Anaconda for very first time, and this is kind of ship, that needs a bit of practice in order to get most of it.

My advice?

Make it fully A rated, spend some time at CZ/RES using various loadouts, and then you might start using it in PVP... And yes, if you see any high-ranked Cmdr that would like see ur derbis, run.

Because the Vulture pilot has probably been scrabbling for credits and mastering his craft while you were grinding for your perceived I-win ship.

Stories like this are the only good thing to come out of the Robigo grind.

very much ^this. Assuming the OP went straight from Robigo to 'conda.
There's a reason Robigo is regarded as 'easy' and 'exploity' route. Don't get me wrong, play however you like, that's the beauty of this game, but ask yourself who has a firmer grasp of the game's mechanics, one who's continuously ran smuggling missions in an exploit-like manner - to get to a goal that might not even be fully appreciated/used to full potential due to the lack of experience/understanding of other parts of the game - or one who went through numerous ships and their different behaviors, doing different things, choosing his ship(s) for a given situation based on accumulated knowledge and experience.
Very much any ship more or less has the potential to be your "anaconda" in any given situation if you know how to handle her.

Again, to each his own, in the end we are all here to have some fun - but the stuff mentioned might be a pointer for some of those who are surprised at things like a vulture being this nasty (sit yourself in one, note the large hardpoints and wicked thrusters, learn how to handle her and then go ahead glue yourself to any spot on a large vessel/mediocre pilot combo you can find) or similar occurrences and surprises.

Proper learning takes some time.. and bloody noses. Gaining your shinies by reading up on the best way to make money and stick to it - not so much

Go to a compromised nav beacon, and practice combat. When pitching to get the enemy ship in your sights tur off flight assist and boost. You will get the ship in your sights MUCH quicker.

Probably been said already but: the vulture likely had experience, good pips management and knew his enemy. The Vulture is not a ship to be taken lightly when you're in a big ship that's easy to hit. Upgrade your shields, add chaff, 4 pips to systems while under fire and your survival will go up immensely. Add on an SCB or two (class 6 ideally) and you'll have no trouble keeping your shield up against even a couple of opponents.

basically you got outplayed.

A combat fit Anaconda starts at around 280 million Credits and goes up to 700 million on average. The Vulture is very good against large ships, because it has Large Hardpoints and doesn't suffer from piercing penalties as much as other ships against large vessels like the Anaconda. You can't compare the outfitting cost with the actual strength of some ships if you can't handle them as well as your opponent.

700 Mill?? whoa...and ppl wonder why CRs are important in mission payouts? Not me.

Chime in anytime here as i dont know for sure as i have not yet bought anything more potent than the FAS, but it seems to me from what ive read of advanced combat pilots re these whale ships that
it would be alike sailing a ww2 battleship in the vicinity of a German submarine wolf pack ....That Captn better really know how to use each and every inch of resource in that whale ship or the pack will eat it literally alive each and every time.

As everyone else has said - no surprises there then. Use this as a learning experience. I did the Robigp runs in a Python until I had over 1.1 billion in the bank - and then blew 760M or so on an A-rated general purpose Conda. I did a fair bit of pew-pew in the Python and eventually no single NPC stood a chance - and I didn't have to run from many wings either. In the Conda I've never had to run from any NPCs - single or winged. But I'd still run from a single PvP Vulture..... The great great thing about the Conda is that its tough - great shields and a tough hull (A7 and military) so you ALWAYS have time to high-wake out with shields left - if you don't get cocky and try and take on a good pilot flying a heavy-hitting fighter.

In PvP its not the class of the ship that makes the difference - its the class of the CMDR flying it. And like so much else in Elite there is no quick way of getting there - remember the "grind" of buying the Conda ? Well if you had done a similar grind but to become a good pilot it would be you in the Vulture - happily chewing up rookies in Anacondas....

Vultures are designed specifically to feed on large ships...an A rated Vulture eats Anacondas as its preferred meal. Get one and try using it sometime...they're so evil that you can hang out in a HazRes alone for a LONG time without dying, make buckets of cash, and only have to worry about running if you catch a wing of large ships that want you dead (3x Python, 3x Conda, etc).

Pretty much as above. In PvE mode, I can sit in a hazres for as many hours as I wish, and probably never lose shields. I earn more cash per hour in a Vulture in a hazres than any other ship, and I have "A specced" version of everything (except the ships which require rank). Vultures ar eincrebily fun to fly, and can kick serious butt.

Z..

The lesson(s) learned? Use your Annie for trading/mining/exploring, pick up a Vulture and learn how to fly and fight it if you want to get serious about combat. Graduate to an FDL when you want to kill efficiently AND look sexy whilst doing it:)

Don't use the anaconda for fighting unless you almost got her A-Fitted. Then it's a beast, with proper flight skills of course.
If you want your revenge on the vulture get a FAS ;)

See this is what I'm wondering. I sold my Vulture to get an A-rated FDL but still miss the manouvreability of the Vulture and am considering buying one again in addition to the FDL. Should I buy an FAS though instead? It's an upgrade to a Vulture, but I'm also trying to develop better combat skills and eventually want to do some PvP. Not that I'm particularly interested in competing against other people but I recognise that it will be a much better learning experience. The Vulture would have a much cheaper rebuy cost. On the other hand, I want to avoid needing to rebuy my ship again.

You said it yourself, you "earned" your Anaconda with many many Robigo runs. How the other commander earned his Vulture, we do not know. He may have burned and blasted his way to his ship over the last six months. In which case he will be a far superior pilot to a Nouveau Riche trader in a space whale.

Oh, and if he specked it out, it would be over 20M credits at least.

A 146million Conda is a trade ship, not a fighter. If you fly it factory default, you put a Class 4 Shield gen on it, fill every utility slot with shield boosters, and turn it into a money making trade ship, until you can afford all the parts :D And you never stop and fight anything that can easily grind up your ship, never.

A stock Ana is as thin as paper in combat. Even landing too hard will damage it! Going up against a big ship killer like a Vulture is plain suicide until you are at least B grade with armour- until then evade or run.

@OP Out of interest, do you know what weapons he was using? Beam lasers? Plasma accelerator? Rail guns? etc
