Explorers Free Ticket Home?

I doubt I'll make it back before release but I will spend a few hours in beta looking for any changes I need to make to my blind panic return strategy in order to get home safely.

You can just stay out indefinitely - humanity is so overrated.

I'm sure Iridium Wing will still be offering their services if you do decide to return, or if they're not, I'm sure regulars on the explorer forum will be happy to act as meatshields for you.

I really wish Fdev would change the rules regarding exploration - I can't think of any other game that wipes months of gameplay in one mistake.

"Honey, I'm home. I've brought some dinner."

In a Cutter most Thargoids will probably be little more than roadkill. Probably some obscure 200CR bounty when you're scanned by the station as you're brining it in to bbq though...

I have seen no indication that FD is particularly concerned with making things safer, nor do they seem like it would strike them as unfair if dangers in the black ramped up and explorers were unprepared for it. I feel like I agree with that anyway, if it's the case. I've heard of FD helping CMDRs who suffer problems because of actual bugs or flaws but not because of design changes or features.

You've had plenty of warning. Most Explorers that went to DW are home already (or nearly there) precisely because of this threat.

If they we can travel 65,279 LYs in a week or two, anyone can make it back in time for 2.1. So don't blame Frontier. Heck, one CMDR made the trip to Beagle Point in a scant 23 hours!!!

Besides, it would be a huge honor to be among the first to encounter an alien. Compared to that, what is a month or so of exploration data worth? 25 mil? Peanuts I say.

I jumped home from 19k LY in just over a day, so 22k LY could be done in two days, if you wanted to be back in plenty of time.

OP - The only safe way to play is to turn off your game, shut down your PC and unplug it from the wall.

Risk is part of the equation.

OP may not be out in the black with a hundred mil ship with NOTHING but a sidewinder sitting in dock if anything goes wrong to truly understand risk lol

I dont think they're gonna ramp up the danger from zero to infinity overnight. I assume that for the coming months 'being alert and jumping away' would be enough for all.

Indeed. As far as I know, the only hint we got about new deep space dangers was Michael Brookes saying that he wouldn't fly without at least some defensive capabilities in deep space after 2.1. Pretty vague to say the least and probably no reason for panic.

I went to the far side and back in 2 weeks. It can be done.

Can it physically be done? Sure. Unfortunately not all of us have 12 hours per day to play the game. :)

I can do about 2000 lys per hour when really pushing it in my 33.3 ly Asp. Currently I'm a bit over 56,000 lys out from Sol. So if I put the nose to the grindstone and forego scanning altogether, realistically I could be home in a bout 28 hours of game time. So, I could be home two days from now. That is, if I barely eat or sleep and do nothing else but play Elite. Realistically though with a couple hours per night of playing (and some nights off here and there for other things) I'll be back in the bubble in about three to four weeks.

What CAN be done and what can FEASIBLY be done for most people are often two different beasts entirely. :D

Financial year in the UK starts 1st April (which says a lot about British humour ;) ), not 1st June.

Nope. TAX year starts on April (the 6th actually not the 1st). A company's financial year can run from whatever date it chooses providing it makes that election within the first two years of trading and declares it accordingly to the HMRC.

Pretty sure nothing changes in 2.1 regarding exploration, but maybe I missed something...

In one of the vids, DB said that explorers would be advised to be armed due to increased danger. He immediately back peddled and said defences would be needed. A bit of shield and a chaff will do for me.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what 'dangers' are coming with 2.1?

The only danger we know of for certain is the improved NPC AI. So returning from an exploration trip into the bubble, even in solo or private modes, will be more dangerous than ever before.

As to what other dangers 2.1 might bring, the devs have hinted at explorers needing to get prepared for some added dangers out in the deep of space. Nothing specific yet though, just hints and foreshadowing.

That's one of my biggest reasons for hoping that we get an engineer who can extend the jump ranges of our ships, because if we all need to start flying in combat ready vessels then we are going to lose a lot of jump range to the extra mass we will need to carry. I'm hoping the engineers can offset that range loss at a minimum, or improve it even more than now at best even with the added mass.

When it is the Thargoids, highwaking may not be an option. They used to be able to pull you out of witchspace, plus (IIRC) they inhibited your jump drive too.

It's taken me 57 days to get where I am and I have travelled 134,000LY. I'm just over half way into my journey. I COULD fly a straight line back I guess but then there is no way I am going to set out to do this circumnavigation again.

I'll take comfort in what was actually said which was at some point FD want to add some element of danger. Perhaps even weapons will be required. It was indicated that the new dangers will require commanders to plan ahead. It didn't sound to me like they were going to let loose fleets of laser zapping aliens at me but if they do, I'll wave my fist at the screen a lot and bleat shamelessly into a very large beer.

Don't you mean April 6th?

Nope, I took it from this:

Nothing to be afraid of.
If you want to get spooked everytime a dev hints at some oh so mysterious danger, you may as well stay docked.
Of course they'll say that, having created hundreds of billions stars of nothingness.
It's what people want to hear, fuel the hysteria.
