Something lighthearted for GalNet...

DATE: For Immediate Publication

LOCATION: GalNet - or Achenar, Sol, Vamm

TITLE: The New Imperial Hotness

DESCRIPTION:
A new market for Imperial raiment has opened up in Federal high-society, driving sales in boutiques along the Imperial/Federal border and tourist destinations. The “New Imperial Hotness,” as the fad has become colloquially known in the Federation, is turning heads and generating controversy.

Vesta Snap, proprietor of ‘Snappy Vestments’ aboard McNair Ring in Vamm, has had a hard time keeping Imperial-style couture in stock.

“Everyone is going to look so fabulous this season! The new Imperial hotness is just what we needed to turn everything from drab to fab! It’s a pity we haven’t worked with Imperial designers before. Sales have been fabulous too! I’ve already had more sales this month than the rest of the year to date!”

Some systems have already begun instituting bans or heavy tariffs on clothing sourced from Imperial systems in an attempt to protect the Federal textile industries from a perceived economic invasion.

Title: Wolf Secures Targeted Expansion
Description:

A press release from the office of Victoria Wolf VI, First Merchantess of Wolf 406 Transport & Co, has recently confirmed the rumors suggesting a potential expansion by the company into the Cupinook system. Cupinook has been seen as a mature market with no more room for outside influences to enter in. The powerful Alliance business leader spoke of the importance of this new venture in a communique that acknowledges the efforts of Alliance Elite Diplomatic Corps in making it possible.

"Cupinook will bring untold new opportunities for our company, while improving the livelihoods of the nearly two and a half billion local residents. I thank my good friends in the AEDC for their unstinting efforts in making this latest move a reality."

TITLE: Noted conspiracy theorist comes to former Federation President's defense

Ricardo Bentonio, speaking from his residence in the Groombridge 34 system, has issued a statement of support for former Federation President Jasmina Halsey.

"They're calling President Halsey crazy when she just may be a modern-day Joan of Arc ... a conduit chosen to by the Architects of Creation to speak to mankind. The powers-that-be want to silence her voice by locking it away. I demand that a small group of scientists and I be granted an audience with President Halsey so we can find out the truth first-hand."

Bentonio was recently in the news after making his own plea for cartographic data to prove his theory that the 29th of February 3302 was an 'aberrant day' heralding the imminent collapse of the universe. What Mr. Bentonio did with that data, and whether it helped prove or disprove his theories, has never been released to the public.

Title: Corruption at Kagan Vision ends
Location: Varati and COL 285 SECTOR IX-T D3-43
Time: asap
Description:

In the space of two weeks, the Canonn has gone from being a minor presence in COL 285 SECTOR IX-T D3-43 to taking control of the system and now, after a brief but intense civil war against Varati Blue Public, Kagan Vision also.

Following the victory, Prof D Luffy explained how the war for control of Kagan Vision started, and why the victory was so important for the residents throughout the system.

"We conducted an audit of the government accounts after our landslide election victory here and discovered that Varati Blue Public had maintained control of Kagan Vision by paying substantial bribes to successive local governments."

"We asked VBP to relinquish control of the station, because we couldn't allow such corruption to continue. They refused, forcing us into a war which ended on the 7th May with a crushing victory for us, and a massive loss of assets for VBP."

"We are now turning our attention to similar practises in Varati, and anticipate there being more wars before we can say that this corruption has been eradicated."

I know this is a bit longer than normal but I've noticed you seem to relax the wordcount restrictions a bit for the local articles :)

If you're looking for a bit of local flavour as background to this, then we published one in the last week: http://canonn.science/2016/05/04/civil-war-erupts-over-corrupt-kagan-vision-deals/

Title: Probability Space

Location: Galnet, if not, Antal

Time: ASAP

Description:

Concern is mounting in the hermitage system of Antal as reports suggest a prototype supercomputer known as Prometheus is predicting "a coming dark age".

The revolutionary mainframe uses near infinite amounts of raw data to create advanced social models, but since its activation the computer has repeatedly simulated a galactic upheaval resulting in trillions of deaths.

"We are currently running diagnostic tests on its logic centres, but so far the machine is functioning correctly" stated its designer, Bruno Ensor.

When asked if he believed the predictions, Ensor gave an unsettling reply:

"My colleagues in Sirius Gov have a saying: '....with enough data we can predict almost anything'.....the unknown artifacts, Starship One, barnacles, Halsey... maybe the computer can see something in the data we cannot. Maybe it really has shown us the future, and we just simply refuse to believe it."

Police chiefs clamp down on ‘Ram Scan Scams’ – All systems (General news)

Description
Ever since its first use, by local Police forces, under budget pressures, in the LP 847-48 system, ‘Ram Scan Scams’ or just ‘Ram Scanning’ as it has become to be known, has seem widespread use across space. Police forces and Militia’s targeting speeding ships and clipping them to issue a fine, under the justification that the ships where breaking the law.

However, following a fatal accident in the Nihursaga system, Police chiefs across many systems as now clamping down on the practice. A shieldless Hauler was tragically destroyed whilst docking at Hardwick Hub, after being hit by a Police vessel trying to perform a Ram Scan Scam. The ship was hit too fast and span out of control, into the side of the station, killing the lone pilot.

A spokesperson for the Nihursaga Coalition stated that the practise was outlawed immediately and several police pilots are now facing disciplinary action. However, there has been widespread condemnation across space that so many police forces have been employing this tactic and it took a fatal accident to bring it to a stop.

>>- We look for submissions that are well written. Don’t worry – it doesn’t have to be a literary masterpiece! But the less editing a piece requires, the more likely it is to be posted on GalNet.

So the clunky content on Galnet, with its excessive use of unnecessary adjectives and tangential descriptions is edited? I'd leave player submissions as they are.

What's the point of this post?

I fail to see how posting such badly punctuated negativity contributes to any discussion whatsoever.

Nobody asked you to come here and slate the people upon whom we rely for our in-game voice, so please take it somewhere else.

My punctuation is perfect - is it you who writes Galnet?

(It must be you: who else would write 'upon whom we rely', rather than simply 'we rely upon'?

Actually 'rely on' would be stylistically better and more current. But you don't get it. It's a matter of suitable style rather than faint misremembered notions of schoolboy grammar.)

Lol okay. I'm well aware that the whole stranded preposition 'rule' is arcane and no longer taught; I have no problem with that. But when I write here, I write as myself - and that's just the way in which I speak, sometimes. See, I did it again.

I could've sworn you missed a comma there, though. But, since your punctuation is perfect, I'm obviously wrong.

Pedantry aside, your popping up in here in bold, no less, to slate people who spend their time going through our submissions, approving and 'cleaning them up', is not actually contributing anything, and I fundamentally disagree with your point.

I have no problem with the edits I've had - 150-160 words is not easy to achieve, and sometimes, when you're on the quest for economy, you can miss edits that other people do not. A second or third pair of eyes is often the difference between a good Galnet and a great Galnet.

@Ian Dingwall,

In light of Engineers personifying mission contacts in every station, and Engineers also becoming "real people" so to speak, it might be a good idea to think about updating the writing rules on the first post. I'm keen to know if including these rather minor characters (in most cases) are also "off limits" just like powerplay powers. Obviously, if a faction were to run a CG in a station, it would make sense for that stations mission rep to be involved in the coordination. Likewise any articles establishing the context of that CG may need to mention those NPCs.

Would also help, as LordZoltan points out, as some rules seem a little more flexible these days, which is kinda frustrating when trying to keep an article to 150 words and having to drop context or description, while longer articles will still get accepted.

Considering the amount of bad grammar and lack of editing that has become the norm for most 'real world' news agencies I find Galnet, even at its worst, to be just fine. Editing was killed by we people living in the 21st century not by the fictional newshounds in the 34th. And yes ... you are missing a comma there between 'descriptions' and 'is'.

If you were to take a moment to consider not only your own flawless grasp of the Queen's English, but that there actually are people in this world for whom it is not their first language, even go so far to realize that some of those savages do not even learn English in school at all, then you might possibly look at this process in a more favorable way. ;-)
