its the little things........ (bits of games which leave lasting impression)

I was thinking about this earlier. Despite playing the original on the bbc the Amiga port was where I spent the vast majority of my hundreds of hrs gameplay, and even now certain sounds are etched into my head from the game. There are others but, I think the 3 sounds which gave the biggest lasting impression was the docking sound, the fuel scoop sound, and last but not least the ecm.

(I am not talking big things such as music, obviously the BD in elite is as iconic as they come)

What - if any - little effects in games from yesteryear have left a lasting impression on you?

And do you think in 30 years people (may be me) will be saying the exact same thing about bits of ED?

Not Elite related but...

The 'pop' and fireworks when a lemming exploded ("Oh no!").

The sound of rock breaking and being able to slap my imps to make them break rock faster. The sound of gold being taken from the treasury. Mistresses being tortured.

Dukes one-liners: "Blow it out your ****."

"Whaat!" "What do you want" "Stop poking me!"

Little things like being able to swan-dive into concrete to break Laras' neck.

Those are some of my fondest moments.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I loved the music in Star Control II.

The installation for Command and Conquer - it was the first time I'd ever seen an installation be 'themed' with the game. Impressive.

Those huge beam weapon sounds in Freespace 2.

The ability to see campaign medals on your uniform in XWing.

Monkey Island when you realise that all those responses you learned from Capt Smirk aren't going to work.

hearing Whumpa whumpa whumpa yada dada dee. Yadadada dada dee... GHOSTBUSTERS!

GTA 3 when you're asked to blow up the fish factory, "I want it raining fish. I want it... Biblical!"

Quake - The Dopefish Lives!!!

And in Doom. The smile on Doom Guy's face when he picks up the Gatling gun.

Other traders in Commodore 64 Elite - realization of the fact that even in deep space not everyone is an enemy.

The Thargoid missions music in FFE.

Being tormented by the leech on the first gameplay screen of 'Another World'...

The opening scene of 'Homeworld'... oh god, the music...

The one liners in Worms were hilarious

The sound of Tanya and other special units in command and conquer "c4, knocking at your door"

But nothing beats the Blue Danube...

The reload sound of the double barrel shotgun in DOOM2

First few hours in Neocron MMO

When the emperor granted me a sign on my arm in "Tie Fighter"

Jumping into witchspace in the original Elite and getting bounced by a group of Thargoids immediately and being very dead soon afterwards.

Followed closely by successfully docking manually for the first time.

Not a sound, but an image

The ever growing number of white crosses in Cannon Fodder.

Sounds:
The boooo-beeep turning on the BBC.

+1 to the "Oh no!" from Lemmings. Off on a tangent, two player Lemmings was hilarious fun.

I'd say the most prominent memory for me wasn't just one game... it was the multicoloured raster bars when loading a game.... oh the heady days of when they discovered overscan too.... oh my.

Pretty much any of the special weapons in Worms, from the Holy Hand Grenade (Hallelujah! *boom*) to the Concrete Donkey (hee-haw *BANG*, hee-haw *BANG*) will be forever etched in my mind.

The satisfyingly crunchy sound when you roundhoused someone in Exploding Fist.

The opening to Another World.

Being pinged by surface ships in Silent Service II (I think it was II, on the Amiga) whilst trying to stay vewwy, vewwy quiet...

I think it was in Space Hulk, no idea what platform but maybe Amiga, where you would hear the distant voice of a doomed marine saying 'they are upon me' or something similar.

The 'round end' noise in Rebelstar.

The FMV music and graphics intro to Tekken 2, which I thought was a great piece of music at the time.

Glider Rider's way improved soundtrack on the 128k Speccy.

Ah, so many lol

A lovely detail in Freelancer was when you shot up an enemy ship, the pilot could be heard screaming over the comms just before it exploded.

I'm not sure why they chose to transmit their death throes to their killer, but it was cool as it made it very satisfying to shoot them up.

Also the random police patrol scanning your cargo for contraband.

An Elite one, but one of the strongest memories in all gaming - accidentally ramming another Cobra and realising they were just another trader like me and the consequences of that careless action and how i'd destroyed their future. :( I was very young, how embarrassing...
