Voice Attack – why do you like it?

Poll: Who uses Voice Attack who is in a serious relationship or marriage?

I for sure know that my wife would send me to the doctors if I would start talking to my computer ;)

My girlfriend talks to her car, kinda balances everything out. Anyway, what's your wife/girlfriend doing in your games room? A guy needs his space. That's like me hanging around when she does Yoga, she'd tell me to get out.

@Oggie Boogie, for me Voice attack is like a game in itself, your mind is the limit as far as programming it goes, it's satisfying watching it grow and become more complex, be it simply running an automated adv scan right up to automatically configuring the ship for attack and defence, auto shutdown/module startup, ships library/timed events, custom sounds, auto route plotting via bookmarks etc etc etc.

It's basically another crew member for me, wouldn't fly without it.

you might want to take a closer look to the vid I posted, @777driver, regarding the route plotting thing as you use vr

Being german, i set my Windows to english, too. Was a bit tricky in Win 7, but upgraded to Win 10 now, all running fine.

Why are you doing this? VA uses the current system language for speach recognition. It works perfectly fine with German.
Unless you use one of the pre-built voicepacks, of course. But this has nothing to do with VA, but with the fact that those packs are programmed with English commands.

Edit: Oh, okay! I just saw that you use 'Orion'. Well, this explains it, of course!
I was just wondering, as I've read a similar claim in another thread, where no voice-pack was involved. Never mind! :)

I tried to bind the "request landing" with a new key binding. Using "Right Shift+P" and "Left Shift+P" instead of "Right Shift+Right Arrow" and "Left Shift+Left Arrow" and now it works. I have press button 0,035 sec for each command and 0.035 pause in between and it works very good so far. I even added a command to leave the station. Its seamless and fun. It seems VA didn´t like the Shift+Arrows key inputs. Hope this can help others having problems with macros. Although, it will still be easier being able to bind 2 key to the command :p

I also had to train the speech recognition to be more able to let the VA understand "abort the landing" because "abort landing" became "abort the landing" sometimes. But adding a spoken word to each word made VA more able to understand "abort the landing" thus making that command the preferred one.

Well, in fact it's not just because of Orion.
Since i was 12 years old (which is many, many years ago...) i played Computer games in english. First game ever was 'AD&D - Pool of Radiance'. Big, fat manual in old english(? [thy, aye, nay and such])... That basically helped in school a lot. :)
It just feels so damn wrong to give german instructions to an otherwise english game, i bet you get the idea.
On top of that, the recognition rate went through the roof switching to english...
[big grin]

edit: and i do not use Orion's profile, just the .wav files, made my own profile for it.

First off, it gives me a sci-fi feel. VA (as opposed to other voice Response sfw) has some pretty interesting responses not just the standard "Shields up!" but Vasco (Brian Blessed) deriding you for your lack bravery for using shields at all. Makes the the AI feel alive.
Second, it makes a lot of commands more convenient, especially in combat with PIP management, opening cargo bays, taking off and landing.
Lastly, you can add your own sound effects with a little basic know how. I found a website that has hundreds of Star Trek (TOS,TNG, DS9, the Movies) sound effect mp3 files for free. Now when I say "Sensor sweep" my sensors zoom out to max and the TOS Scanner sound plays, or if I say "Hailing Frequencies" the Comm Panels open and I get that oh so familiarcommunicator chirp.

Hi,

Currently I am using a HOTAS and have plenty of button, which still are unused with functions. Always thought about to use Voice Attack, but just for “landing gear on and off” I thought this was too mundane. Would you please share with me, if you use Voice Attack with a special voice pack, why do you like it so much and what is the best feature for you?

Thanks,
Oogie Boogie

Its one of the most useful and cost effective programs I've bought. Since I use a controller it helps with the lack of buttons, can issue commands whilst in combat and automate stuff like requesting docking. Been using it since we were made aware of it. Love it :)

Its a genius little bit of kit.

I use it so I don't have to remember which button is assigned to which function. My HOTAS muscle memory is set for Aces High, and I find it easier to do certain thing in ED with voice commands.

I alternate between using it and not. I quite like the "feel" of landing by asking my computer for "docking speed" and then to "deploy landing gear" (granted the computer is D.O.R.I.S. so I get some backchat - which actually I want more of, I like the backchat).

However if I use VoiceAttack then I can't listen to music or whatever since I don't use headphones. So it depends on the mood.

I use Voice Attack for those mundane tasks like you mentioned. Landing gear, Lights, Cargo Scoop, ect. I even use it for some control over my throttle. At the 25% intervals. I don;t rely on those in combat, but it lends some fun during the time I am not at risk. The single biggest draw for me was the Orion pack. Being able to hang with William Shatner in my ship was too much to resist.

The Orion pack promises to offer a guided tour of a nebula, along with a little mystery as to what is Orion's origin. I will set off to do just that once my Faction's current efforts are concluded.

I for sure know that my wife would send me to the doctors if I would start talking to my computer ;)

I was playing Firefall recently. Your female personal assistant voice acts mission info throughout the game. My wife asked me one day if that voice was 'from the game' or what? A headset definitely helps...as well as an explanation of voice controlled commands.

I use VA extensively, not just for voice but also for automation of routine tasks. For example, when I push the Jump button on my HOTAS, the VA macro that is bound to the Jump key does the following:
1. If the cargo hatch is deployed, it retracts the cargo hatch.
2. If the landing gear is deployed, it retracts the landing gear.
3. If the weapons are deployed, it retracts the weapons.
4. If the FSD priority is configured such that the FSD is offline when weapons are deployed, then the macro waits until the FSD is online. Otherwise, the macro waits until the weapons are retracted.
5. The macro starts charging the FSD.
.
In this example, I don't have to keep pressing the Jump button because the FSD is blocked by cargo scoop, landing gear, weapons, or offline FSD. The macro ensures that charging the FSD occurs as fast as possible because I've timed the durations needed for weapons retraction and FSD online delay.
.
Another example: I have many chat macros that put up a static chat message to local, current target, or recent target. These include broadcasts ("Large ship leaving the station. Incoming ships please stand aside"), invitations ("Want to join me for bounty hunting at the haz res?"), warnings ("Snipe my target again and you'll be my next target"), Responses to malcontents ("Don't be a ", "Smile, you're on Carebear Camera"), etc. The chat macros put up the text in a fraction of a second, preventing the need for me to take my eyes of the target to type for many cases.
.
My main point is that you should expand your concept of what VA can do.

To echo what others have said about VA, it's so much more than 'a voice activated key press'.

I mainly use it (Vocal) to managed my routine stuff: docking; cargo; winging up; wing targeting; plotting set routes etc.
I also use it's key/macro settings to control power settings, switch my j-stick from fa-on to fa-off curves.
Need to check it still works, but I have mine pull and play Galnet so I don't have to read it.

Also, bit coy about this, I use it to fire up the game and all my support software, Head TrakIR etc "enable Gun Cam" [redface].

Apart from its utility...it helps build the mood for me when I log in :)

Macros, or more accurately intelligent controls, are a great reason to use VoiceAttack.

Another is that no matter how many controls you have bound to your HOTAS you will run out of fingers at some stage. If you are already rolling, pitching, yawing and thrusting to try to keep track of a target you will probably have no ability to physically change things like pips or weapon groups (depending on your specific HOTAS configuration, of course).
