GPU advice ASAP

OK Ordered both a Vive and a CV1 a while ago. Been updating the page with the order regularly and not even got a month it's expected for either of them then, at lunch my phone went ping, DHL ... what are they doing sending me a message? Theres a link though so I clicked it, it's in czechoslovakian so I click on the translate butten

Right I need a new GPU and fast, a quick search say £500 will cover it but will this be good enough...

Basic spec if you can't get to the page...

Core Clock: 1102MHz
Boost Clock: 1190MHz
Memory: 6144MB 7010MHz GDDR5
Stream Processors: 2816
SLI Ready
VR Ready
PhysX/CUDA Enabled

Yes I know it says VR ready I just want to be sure. Plus shout about the imminent arrival! :D

Thanks in Advance

What do you currently run? As 1070 / 1080 are just around the corner.

Miles off mate from memory it's a Radeon R9 290 (might be wrong with the model - 2 or 3 years old now). Was great a few years back but doubt it'll run VR now.

I was hoping to hold onto the current card till the 1080's arrived but if it's a choice between staring at a HMD sat in its box or shelling out for a new card before the 1080's arrive I'll hit the card option every time. Thanks for thinking of it though.

Alright what's general opinion then, when do the 1080's come out? and should I resist temptation and wait?

EDIT - Or should I get the cheapest 970 I can find and use that till the 1080's are out proper.

Well look I know you want it but you've waited already.

1080 is on sale 27th of May, totally your call, the prudent thing to do is hang on.

On the 27th it's not 100% clear what will happen, NVidia's reference card *will* be on sale but at +$100. :(

I believe also on sale at the same time are the other manufacturer cards but not 100% sure .

If these are not on sale at the same time as the Nvidia card, then at most everyone is saying it'll be two weeks till manufacturer cards are out.

I have a Vive, my advice is wait, unless you're moneybags and it's not an issue!

Got to say I think that's the smart move

Patience is a virtue !!

And you will only reap the rewards further down the line

I believe it's either end of May or early June (may vary depending on locale and all and how strong the release is).

I'm stuck on a 290x with Phenom X6, both overclocked as much as I dare and Elite is just about playable for me on lowest of the low settings, obviously, YMMV.

I'm getting a GTX 1080 and a new CPU with it (and mobo etc.) as soon as they're out. The wait is pretty excruciating.

Did you test your current card for VR compatibility? Here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/323910/

If you want PhysX then it has to be a NVIDIA card. I have an MSI GTX 980Ti 6G Gaming card and my score is in my sig block. It runs Elite in VR on Ultra settings, 1.5 SS just fine. I love MSI cards over all other brands for quality and reliability.

If your VR score is unacceptable and you want bleeding edge then wait for a 1080. However, if you want something now and cannot wait, then the 980Ti you showed will see you in good stead. I did a quick whip round and the price on that page seems decent.

Here's a chart that compares them. Note the 980Ti has better stats in places than the 1080. The 1080 is faster, but not by a whole lot. I think it is a better card for raw VR horsepower, but there is no bad choice between the two.

Thanks both - I've not been following the 1080's closely enough to know the date it was coming out, I knew they'd been announced but not when. Got caught off guard by the email as it still says processing on the Vive order page!

You're both right I can wait that amount of time. :D

The board partner cards are supposed to be available 10th June. Best thing to do is try the 290 and see how you get on and this will give you a feel for how much extra power you need/want. If the 1080 or 1070 turn out to be silly money then on the plus side 980TIs will very likely drop in price (by how much remains to be seen) and there will be plenty of used ones on fleabay.

Just want to say thanks all! Man those "get it tomorrow if you order in 45 minutes, 44 minutes, 43 minutes ..." fry my noggin big time!

Right I've stepped back from ordering even though Shadragon makes a good point about how close they are to each other. The price will drop as Main Sequence say's. That was my original plan but the shipment note threw me into a panic (well excitement anyway).

Guess I'll join Faster Than Jesus in the waiting game.

Are you getting the Vive or the CV1 first? I can tell you the CV1 will probably run better on older cards. With the engineering Beta I may not bother upgrading from my 970 anymore. I'd expect the Vive support to improve in time.

The Vive is set to arrive tomorrow, not sure if that's an indication that the Vive is selling less or if HTC are just a lot more savvy when it comes to releases as they're an established phone manufacturer.

And Thanks HeavyGroovez - really I think my choice now is do I get the 1080 or given Shadragons post do I see how much the 980 ti get's knocked off its price tag and if it's enough to tempt me in that direction.

PS Back home now and I did get the card number wrong it's an earlier model R9 200 but when I looked at the original order it's actually a 7970 so the same as Adams - it'll do for a week or two though.

Yeah ive been watching 980Ti prices and most seem to be selling for roughly £375-450 - people are trying to get rid of them before the avalanche hits.

If the 1070 OC cards match its performance you will see the 980Ti going for a lot less than that.

Make no mistake the Ti is a beast but It will be old hat in a matter of weeks.

OK I know this is a bit OT as it's an ED Forum but...

The Vive arrived yesterday and took me a couple of hours to set up. The big problem is I only have 1 HDMI out and I run my PC through a TV via HDMI (I've got a mini displayport to HDMI cable on order). Anyway the only way I can get into VR ATM is to start remote control software on my PC. Start Steam VR, unplug my TV and plug in the Vive, remote onto my PC via my phone (yeah it's a pain!) and reboot the device. I tried ED but it wouldn't open properly so I'll wait until I can run both the TV and the Vive as it's just too fiddly but...

Holy carp, I really wasn't expecting this! :D

Just getting into the tutorial is mind blowing, the only VR I'd tried before this was cardboard and it's not even close. Yes you can make out individual pixels, a bit like sitting too close to an old cathode ray tube TV (actually nowhere near that bad but it's a similar effect) but only if you really look for it.

The scale is so real but thing that really did it for me was the controllers, when I placed them on the floor for calibration and they're there in VR. I reached out for them and they're there in my hands in VR (sans hands) but I just picked up a virtual device and I can feel it and move it and it just reacts the same in VR!

Stupid I know but oh wow. I spent about an hour just sat in the Vive home getting vertigo looking over the edge!

Jeezus, that link... 500quid for a 980Ti. Ouch.

Waiting for a 1070 or 1080 is the prudent option.

Significantly more power (and therefore longevity) over a 980/980Ti if you're coming from a R9 290. A 1080GTX will have a lot more in reserve for potential driver updates, developers making use of the SMP features for VR.

Try your 290 for now and wait. Stay on target!
