Very first time playing Elite (ever, I waited till my Rift arrived). Press the launch button, get spun around, look up realizing there's a GIANT station up there, and sit in awe as my ship is pushed up over the lip, gasping at how cool it is to peer out my windows into this huge, busy space port.
Next, after fiddling with my HOTAS to learn what all the buttons did, I reached for the in game side stick. Except my stick is center mounted... I grabbed air. After a moment of pure confusion, it registered, and I reached to the middle and smacked my palm into my trusty stick. PRESENCE ACHIEVED. My brain was in the game.
At first I thought the cockpit was a bit drab and plain (spoiled by flight/car sims). After the first time I saw the hardpoints pop some guns up in my view, I realized, "Hey, I'm in VR, I can stand!" Stood up, saw little doors open as I reached down for the hardpoints button on my throttle, and 3D guns came out of my ship. Boggled. Realized, I can see the whole fuselage from in here. Took in the lines of my ship, moved the stick to see the little blue thrusters fire. Sat back down, looked all over the cockpit, and smiled, more presence. I was in a space fighter.
Next one, also inside a space dock. Decide to get up out of my chair after a night of combat. Look out the windows at all the interesting things in the station. Explore the cockpit of my new Viper. Walk to the back door. Walk back to the pilot's seat, reach out, and my Obutto simpit is EXACLY where it is in game. The ingame chair back was just a few inches higher than my RL one. But knowing exactly where I was, being able to grasp my real chair as I leaned to see out the side/rear window at a cargo ship taking off... stunning.
