The Core of the Galaxy

This raises another question. Why is everyone saying they are going to wait until horizons comes out to go on their journey? Is there something in it that will impact the trip? Also what is this beagles point you speak of?
See my sig for your answer. [haha]

Also, Beagle Point is the farthest point away from Human inhabited space that we can currently reach. It's 65,000 light years away or so.

The asp build i used for my core trip. And yeah omnifarious has mentioned horizons coming soon allows you to land on planets and drive on them with a planetary vehicle, adds a whole new level to the game, so either hold off for it or go now, point to stress is if your doing it for money then you have to take your time, go either 2k ly above or below the bubble, and make your way in, and scan, scan and more scan every system, if you just want to honk it to the middle like i partly did then your returns wont be great, and another tip, space dementia kicks in around 7-10k ly out, where you may question what the hell am i doing lol. o7 cmdr, good luck.

Having done it before as well, I would suggest three trips. Doing it this way, you'll have enough space money to buy each ship after the previous trip.
Trip 1 - something "short" just outside the bubble. probably about 500-1000 light years. Do this in your current ship. You'll need the best FSD you can get, a fuel scoop, and (ideally) the advanced discovery scanner. This will be mostly a learning trip, and should fund enough to get an exploration cobra.
Trip 2 - somewhere like the coal sack nebula (that was my first trip!). about 2,000 to 3,000 outside the bubble. Now you'll start getting your name on undiscovered things. doing this will get you enough (or close to enough) for a diamond back explorer (or if you get really lucky, an Asp explorer).
Trip 3 - to Sag A*. You'll know enough by now to be fine. watch out for neutrons!

Obviously, for all these builds you'll want the best FSD, fuel scoop, and scanner(s) you can get. keep it as light as possible. read the exploration write-ups that are all over. several really good ones. Have fun!!! explore for fun, not for money.

Me too

Ditto
Triple ditto'd. I've been more or less in a holding pattern with Elite since December when I got the game.

Obviously I've found other fun things to occupy my time with, but trading, fighting, and earning credits is just killing time compared to what really matters most about Elite Dangerous; trying to remember to point your ship away from an endless barrage of stars flying at your face. ;-) For me the real - ahem... - star of the show in ED is the galactic simulation. Finding a place to park on the dark side of a small icy body in a far flung system, and shutting down various systems for the night is still one of my favourite moments in the game so far.

I've no intention of heading to A* come Horizons, but I do intend to finally and thankfully leave the bubble behind for a while in a new ship.

As for tips? There's been enough already in this thread, and there are plenty of resources at hand. The post above has a good point about staggering your exploration progress. For me, the Pleiades was step 1, and soon enough I'll have step 2, though I'll likely head towards a Wolf-Rayet instead of the Coalsack.

Thanks for the tips commanders! Quick question though. Is it mainly a good FSD that will make you jump 20+ly or do you need to get rid of most of the attachments on your ship also? Currently my Adder jumps about 13ly (mainly equipped for combat right now) and I would love it if I could get my Adder to those kind of jumping distances

To my knowledge, people have made it to the core in every ship in the game, even eagles and sidewinders. I suggest having a ship capable of 20+ LY ranges just in case. There are some places for stars are quite far apart. To make it truly worth while fit an advanced discovery scanner and detailed surface scanner. As well as a fuel scoop. Other modules are nice but may not be needed are heat sinks and field maintenance units. Note some ships like Adder and Hauler may not be able to fit all of these goodies.

Maximize jumprange by d rating everything except your FSD and power plant. For the power plant, fit the smallest A rated class you can to power your ship. This will give you better heat efficiency. Of course for FSD the best class you can fit A rated.

Probably going to give ethelred's Hauler build a try since I am really close to being able to afford it. How much money can you really get be exploring? Also does the surface scanner work the same way as the discovery scanner?

Also is the only benefit to buying a more expensive fuel scoop to refuel faster? because if thats the case I will stick with the one I have for a while and save the money lol

The detailed surface scanner is passive, it works when you scan a body and get 50% extra profit and more info on the goodies a body has.

And yes, the better the fuel scoop the quicker you refuel. Which means less heat exposure in close proximity to the sun.

If you have the cheapest fuel scoop or so i suggest you get a better one. Otherwise you'll be scooping until the next millenia arrives. You don't want that. :p

takes about 14 months, so be warned, you will need a stasis pod too, cant remember what station sells them, thats to prevent the space dementia that kicks in when your all alone out there. gl CMDR.
Is this a joke or you're for real?? Can someone please elaborate on this? Got me intrigued!!

oh well I wish I would have have gotten a surface scanner sooner xD.

Also already own a pretty well decked out Adder and put together this build for it

anything i'm missing for the journey?

also is the haulers cockpit view better than the adder. love the adder but the view from the cockpit is unfortunately very restrictive

Hauler has a better view in my opinion, but the adder build you posted is very good. I would consider adding a field maintenance unit. Also, if this is your first big trip, I suggest a test flight out to about 5000Ly. Make sure you are satisfied with the capability. If it were me, I would add an additional fuel tank so you don't need to scoop as often.

Should I aim for the most expensive Field maintenance unit?

Also what would you recommend giving up for the extra fuel tank?

As for aditional fuel, maybe the shields.

About the repair unit a medium will suffice. I chose to use it once as i got trapped between 2 stars and in all my stress forgot to pop a heat sink.
