I could shoot barnacles but they don't give any meta alloys. Not sure whats going on, could be bug so I made a bugreport and will see.
Same here CMDR, they are living creatures.
I will be looking or another option with an Engineer who does not want me to shoot at life (that's not 'wanted').

I did not say that I am quitting. I just mentioned that this is always the same story with ED, after each update. Major things are broken when new version is out.
I'm not 100% sure it is a bug but before I got meta alloys from barnacles and now not, maybe its a change dunno. Also have never seen meta alloys as mission reward during the whole beta.
The only thing at issue is you research technique.
You are looking in the wrong places.
Check out the beta forums and patch notes.
This is the game, all about discovery.
I believe it is a bug as the change log for 2.1 mentioned no changes regarding meta-alloys or the barnacles themselves (CTRL+F for the win)
BTW, if it is not a bug but a feature, it should be mentioned in patch notes and/or in some document called "What's new in release X.Y.Z", like in all other MMO games, when some major game mechanics are changed in new update. In majority of games, those game mechanic changes are oficially announced in advance, before the patch take place.
