I'm still downloading the update on both my computer's, so I've not had chance to test my 2.0 FDL against 2.1 AI.
And yes, I'm not refitting it!
I'm going on head first to a haz res, alone.
Just to feel the difference.
In 2.0 I could stay there until my SCBs ran out. Which made lots of money, but was dull.
I can easily afford the rebuy on my FDL, so I'm not worried, this 1 time. Lol

I'm just hoping FD don't do a knee jerk reaction to the illegitimate complaining and nerf the AI before I can try it. Lol
Which will likely be Tuesday... damn girlfriend and bank holiday weekend!

I have not had a chance to play since 2.1 dropped - but Beta 4 was the last AI I fought, and that was fantastic, I actually felt like I earned my Elite kills.

For those that played Beta - is the AI at Beta 4 standards? If so... AWESOME!

If not... It should be.

Z...

This is so much better now...

NPCs were boring as hell before, there was no uncertainty at all, we always knew we would win. And it stopped being fun long ago and instead became a nuisance. RES sites were boring, mere farming grounds with beatiful sights, were players could simply park their ships, point them into an NPC general direction and press fire until targets popped. Interdictions became just a travelling nuisance. I would no longer care, it was just a hickup in my travel, I just submitted to interdiction and went back to supercruise not even caring to fight the NPC.

Now its revived, fights are interesting, more kinds of tactics are worthwhile, and victory is not always assured. Sometimes we might have to fall back and pull a brave sir robin while our ship is dropping pieces and that is awesome.

The only thing I would change, is make top tier NPCs rarer but at the same time more dangerous (like beta 4 dangerous).

I got shredded by the AI a couple of times in beta, but it's still too early for me to have a view - let's see if I can adapt and overcome first.

(So I didn't vote at all.)

I think that the days of no/lightweight shielded trading are over and players will have to adjust their outfitting accordingly. From the livestream yesterday Michael Brookes did make the point that the economy would be more volatile in respect of system states. So, for example, a system in famine would pay more for food or a system in war would have increased pricing for medicines, that sort of thing.

It may be that if the rewards for supplying what is needed in systems, as opposed to the rinse/repeat trading that has been done to date, have a healthy increase then traders won't lose out on overall profit by decreasing their cargo space to accomodate more in the way of defensive capability.

I don't know for sure though but I'd hope that this turns out to be the case. I have seen a system where Painite is selling for 70k+ per ton as opposed to the normal 36k pt, so to make the same credits as in 2.0 you'd only need half the cargo space.

Outfitting will need more careful consideration and you'll need to keep your wits about you when trading in certain systems and that's no bad thing imo.

Combat AI is now spot on imo.

Fighting npc's is now far more like fighting an actual person rather than the rinse repeat it used to be. I really hope they don't change this, the challenge is far more rewarding.

I was just interdicted by an Elite Vulture and a little while ago by an Elite FDL, I'm in a FAS. Wow! They really felt like fighting Elite pilots.
They both spammed chaff and SCBs. I won, but certainly had to work for it.
So far I like the enhanced AI, but I've yet to try a CZ. I usually BH in SC, rather than RES, mostly because the NPCs were more of a challenge; I'm glad I did now.

Hunting for micro assets for engineer mods; every time I drop into a USS (even L zero ones) I get jumped. I'm in an Asp with a good multi-purpose spec but all but one of the NPCs has modded weapons and take my shields and some hull in their first pass. I've been playing since the Merc beta so even though I don't claim to be the best pilot ever I do know the ropes and I'm not sure how I'm supposed to do general everyday tasks without shipping around at all times in a combat boat and nothing else. I'm farming micro assets in an Alliance democracy with (supposedly) good security (there are plenty of cops in SC but none ever arrive in a USS for me). It doesn't look as though most ships are now viable for standard non-combat gameplay.

Maybe my experiences this morning and last night aren't typical but as I'm not wanted; not in PP (never have been and never will be); and I'm in an allegedly 'safe' system I'm not sure why I would be getting an atypical game response.

It's great they upped AI capability 4-fold.

Did they up the motivation (rewards) 4-fold as well? Or is it a case of take 15 minutes to chip an AI ship down for 1,200cr ?

Interested to hear what the mission reward is for assassination missions as well.

TLDR; Great that they 'fixed' AI, but have they matched difficulty with adequate reward?

So far the AI has felt to be in a good place and scales well, at least for Expert ranked pilot flying a mostly A spec vulture. I've had several close calls against ships 1-2 ranks above me and fights against ships 1-2 ranks below me have not felt like major threats, but still are noticeably buffed from what they would have been before. I'm curious how things will go if I hop back inside my Sidewinder. So I'll put my vote in for AI is just right, but scaling is important so that new players can face off against novice opponents and work their way up.

Ah, looks like I rejoined Elite at exactly the wrong time. I can watch people strut about in Anacondas earned by farming NPC's, but might as well go back to mining myself

Crap

I guess the folks rejoicing are the ones who already made a credit fortune an dhave bought everything they want

Voted just right, had a good time in a CZ today. Vulture is still king there but I had to stop doing some of the more recless things I sometimes do because that did notturn out so well. which is good, one should need to be careful in a warzone :D

I made about 90% of my Credits with non-combat stuff, combat never has been the big earner for me. That does not change with 2.1, making money without shooting works very good.

(Voted "just right")

I have a suggestion for a compromise solution to help both sides of the debate.

But first, my background:

I'm a combat pilot / explorer, active in the BGS and RES sites. When I purchased my Fer-de-lance I was still a weak pilot, Vulture was an easy life, I never lost it, then I improved my flying with the FDL and 100 hours later I learned to become a mediocre pilot. And that was enough for the rest of the experience. The reason I sell myself that short is because I only occasionally died, never lost more than 1% of my earnings between each rebuy. I had a clear advantage, like a meat eater in the current era can find his hamburgers and occasionally suffering a heart attack once.

Now NPC's, who always impersonated humans and even had our same rank titles, cause perhaps more than 5% loss (just tossing numbers out of my orifice, but it has to be low). We're still making a lot of profit, but probably too much loss for the lowest common denominator who doesn't want any loss.

My suggestion:

Instead of shouting for nerfing the NPC's AI, request/demand/beg/riot for an alternative "premium" insurance package that adds to the cost of the ship and modules but lowers your rebuy cost significantly which comparatively would compensate with great margin your pre-update loss rate with standard rebuy cost.

I am an honest mediocre pilot, I know I'll die a lot, and I'd pay for that so I can learn to be a much more confident pilot and go back to standard insurance. All while getting really challenged. In the meantime, I'm back in my Cobra MK III because of its ridiculous value/rebuy.

Opinion currently reserved!
I've not managed to do much since the update but I have read some varied interpretations of the changes to combat situations..... Some of which sound fab and some of which sound worrying......
I'll form an opinion over the weekend and see. It could be interesting to take my FAS for a spin and see what's up.
Not sure I like the sound of most npc's having modified weapons tho seems a bit over the top for mods to be prevalent, unless the npc's know something we don't??? Where's my tinfoil hat??

From the perspective of only having been here a few weeks, I'm not happy at all...a simple RES has turned into a suicide mission for me and being interdicted means almost certain death or escape by the skin of my teeth. If this game is to force me to stay away from combat then I'll just go find something else to play. Shame...the addiction bug was just starting to bite...learning curve went from steep to brutal overnight (

AI improvements are great!

I left dock to support my faction in a local Low CZ. En route, a Deadly bounty-hunter in a FAS comms me with something threatening, but I drop into the CZ before he has chance to interdict. He follows me into the CZ and gets mobbed by my NPC Black Omega thugs! Marvelous! :D

I do what I usually do in the CZ and get my canopy blown out and hull stripped down to 20% within minutes. There's a dozen alerts going off about the myriad of horrible-death-things that the enemy is using against me - I don't understand any of it, other than the situation is really bad. I just about escape and make it back to the station. I finally release my grip from the stick, my knuckles white, and take a deep breath - that was fantastic!

5 minutes later and I'm back in the fray, this time I think about what I'm doing, picking off lone stragglers and keeping within the blob of green friendlies on the scanner and constantly shifting my PD pips about. That's better :) My group leader comes to wing up with me and we have a great time! Eventually our hulls are chipped away and we withdraw; it's no walk-over, but a decent and satisfying challenge.

Oh and was that a Type-9 I saw in the CZ?! Yes, I think it was! :D

I think I still need to improve my skills and equipment. Skills will come with practice. Now, if only there was some way of tinkering with my gear to make it better...

I was jumped in a USS 0-threat. The ambush variety where I was collecting materials and about two minutes later the baddies jumped in. I was in a medium security system and system security forces showed up within five minutes. From my subjective perception, high security systems have internal security arrive in about 2 minutes, but I wasn't timing things exactly. Though that means they'll help you if you're fighting back. If you intend to high wake out immediately you'll be long gone or dead before the police arrive.
