oh dear.. Felicity wants me to shoot Barnacles

It is for you to find. At this moment it seems people actually found new Barnacles, but it is hit by some bug. It will get fixed and it will be fine.
edit: and beta is there to test things, not give you tactical pre-knowledge how system will work in the game.

Sure: in a galaxy of 400 bilions world without no clue (didn't take part to Barnacle's Cg'goal)

Anyway, let's see how they fix them.

In the meanwhile, ESO is a good alternative to Ed: at least, in that game, I always know what to do and where to go...

Noone needed the barnacles in beta for an engineer ...

It seems some of the changes were held back to further adavance the barnacle stroryline but when you do it like this you need good internal testing ...

Then why tie the storyline material to an engineer entry requirement.

this is poor design

Because Engineers are part of lore now, lady which is FSD Engineer is with backstory with her obsession with Barnacles and Meta Alloys. I personally like this design. Besides this bug - which no doubt will be fixed ASAP - I think it is awesome idea. Your opinion might differ though.

When I click on that engineers tab and when I see what I need to get acess to him, I was sort of expecting a small question mark near required material, with some description and hints. For example: aluminium alloys ? <--- click -- description: aluminium alloys are the basic building block of anaconda spaceship. They were discovered in year 3150 and were first time used for kitchen appliances, later on, with improvements they have become one of major building blocks for computer systems on anaconda spaceship.

Something in that sense. You know, some history about material, or some rumors where they might have been seen.

I did see that materials have descriptions on some pic, but if I don't own a material, is it possible to acess the description?

It should have been tested
Sorry it's a major part of the update and isnt available...
especially as the update was delayed for quite a while in order to eliminate bugs

Because it might encourage players who don't know what barnacles and meta-alloys are to investigate? You seem to assume that becoming friends with an engineer should be a mere formality, i.e. "just give me my upgrades now". Impatience and entitlement...

Considering I will have to contend with the RNG factor and grind materials, as well as eventually unlock all tiers to the upgrades, how is expecting the entry requirement not to be another total grindfest being impatient and entitlement?

For someone ignoring game while wanting "content" anything looks like a grind.

Check the spread sheet in my signature, there you'll find all we know about engineers & components.

It should have. It's not a big issue - FD will get this fixed ASAP - but yeah, this is their fault.

This. You cannot assume at any point that the common player ever reads the forums, reddit, a wiki etc.

Minecraft... ;)

Besides, these things are mentioned in-game in the news if people keep track. If they don't keep track, well...

Personally I really like this way of introducing elements like this to the player. It makes the ongoing story much more integrated into the gameplay. It also opens up for the possibility for some players to become "meta-alloy dealers".

There could be a discussion about when the engineer would want the meta-alloys though. Maybe it shouldn't be the base requirement to get basic access. Maybe it would instead be something the engineer would ask for if the player wants access to higher level modification (lvl 4-5).

New players coming in post-lore news are going to find that a little tough .. Perhaps if the lady also gave you clues that would be useful. (I didn't notice anything from her when I was there last night on the subject)

To you the game itself is an obstacle. If the only thing that matters is getting that level 5 upgrade ASAP, everything between you and that is a grind. But it's not a grind, all of those things standing between you and that level 5 upgrade is the game. It's not supposed to be done in a day. This need to rush everything is what ruins the fun for you, just take it as it comes. Do other things, by chance you pick up a material that an engineer needs for an upgrade, that's a good time to get the upgrade.
