UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 6 - The Canonn

I'm helping Chopper with characterising the status of all the known Barnacle locations.

We've got a much smaller number of intact Barnacle than before. Even fewer are intact and with no defences.

Once we've got all the planets surveyed (should be done Sunday), we'll publish the sheet with the results.
Early results seem to indicate that as many as three quarters of all Barnacles are now in a destroyed state.

Out of rep, but good job (Chopper to).[up]

Might be RNG, but the 3 UA I shot only dropped 1 UF each, the one that expired dropped 2. When I rammed some UA in beta (I had no lasers) I also got 2.

This seem consistent. Rammed or expired UAs always drop 2 UF. The UA explotion animation also look a bit more dramatic than before.

HI all,

Just to ask, has the shell changed?

I've tried a couple of systems and I'm not finding anything (except a few Rescue Ones). Maybe the rarity has just been increased or maybe the shell has moved, or I could just be an idiot and doing it wrong, it's 135-150LY right.

The spawn rate has dropped, massively. Anticipate anywhere from 10 minutes up to 1 hour of waiting. Don't expect to see me racking up new PBs for collecting UAs anymore.

They are just harder to find now, but still in the shell. I had my best luck finding one by traveling between the sun and a planet back and forth.

Sorry for my terrible english. I'm searching barnacles or unknown artifacts in ngc 6357 nebula.
Out of pleiades is a foolish search? anyone located anything out of pleiades?
Thank you for the patience

On the first page of this thread there is a link to a spreadsheet of other Nebula being searched. Whether it is foolish or not depends. If nothing is found at least that Nebula can be ruled out, and prove that the Pleiades is the only Barnacle location. Make sure you have fun doing it though. I've searched planets that quite likely didn't have Barnacles but I just wanted to check.

Ah cool cheers. Just wanted to make sure I wasn;t wasting my time.

Is fine, and definetely more realistic, still better than the ~150 average UA convoy search from way back. =p

Oh God...
Never miss one full day of checking the thread...

Anyway, I finally finished downloading the 2.1...
I can now get back to science!

On a side note, it's about time the download ended.
I began to see Anacondas in my biscuits...

It's funny that you say this. I've done all my UA reserach in ADR GW-W D1-52 and haven't had any significant drop in spawns. This is a system without planets. All UAs have been found close to the star. Max 5 min wait.

I think this may have more to do with the new USS mechanics, than actuall spawn rate. USS in 2.1 hve more parameters for spawning, than just timer. Sitting still waiting, may not work that well now.

Could be. It wouldn't be the first time I've heard incorrect "Patch broke the RNG" claims, although it'd be my first time on that side of the fence.

My usual tricks to get USS spawning certainly haven't worked. During beta I did have one spawn within 5 minutes,, can't verify as I'm back in Barnard's Loop... nothing interesting to report.

EDIT: Also, I hope I'm just doing it wrong right now, but if this is the idea of "winter coming" for exploration, then I might wait for the big freeze... only thing I've found in the last couple hours is a small survey data cache and a crashed nav probe. Oh yeah, and rocks.

Oh yeah, I also found this in my hot chocolate today. I think it's another clue about the barnacle origins...

Thought I'd go scan the some barnacles, since that's a thing now (and it seems pretty harmless), and this is the first time I've personally seen a broken barnacle:

I feel sorry for the poor thing, all wrecked like that. :(

There still seemed to be one or two forlorn fireflies drifting around the broken spires.

If Meta alloys are a requirement for the exploration engineers I am going to be stumped. (I'm away from the bubble and won't be back for a few weeks atm).

I don't want to attack a Barnacle as I think it has serious implications for everyone (although the damage is well and truly done now). My brother said just buy them off the market, however this is no better. As I said to him "I didn't kill the Elephant officer, I just bought the ivory".

You don't have to. Luckily, there are (at least) 2 exploration engineers:

Felicity takes meta alloys.
Elvira takes soontill relics, which are rare goods at some station (forgot the name).

In the beta, both of them offered fsd jumprange upgrades, haven't checked Elvira in the live version though.

I'm not 100% sure about the spawns my self, but I haven't had any delays so far. I hope someone else will check shell systems, without planets, to see if it holds.

When I get the time, I will start to investigate planet surfaces in the shell. It's time for something to happen there.[alien] Perhaps 'Unknown Probes'?

They both have level 5 FDS. I don't know if there is a difference between them?

I don't want to hurt the barnacles either, and while I haven't harvested any meta-alloys myself, I think it is possible to harvest them without damaging them. I recall it was possible to just shoot off the pods without breaking the spires.

It also seems to me that the barnacles are designed to be harvested by whoever engineered them, and without damaging them. I guess the question becomes whether the meta-alloys were acquired responsibly.

Unknown probes have gotta be "the next step"
