Enterprise- if only for the wealth of imaginative talent thrown into reviving what was a virtualy moribund format, seemingly taking barrel scrapings and refining them into pure glod ,garnished with the occasional glorious piece of ham, spiced with a surprising number of gems.
Largely character driven, individual episodes were quite often crafted from the slightest of materials and often tongue in cheek sideways looks at the more mundane aspects of life in a can with a dog.(A brilliant rear-admiral,Porthos commanded with such exemplary dignity that their seemingly never ending search for a tree resulted in not,as was first feared,inter-galactic war,but rather the cultural exchange of philosophical ideas and tropes embodied in the ritualised sequence-(I micturate on you-Are you a urine abstractionist?-What is brown and sticky?) and all transmitted through the medium of modern dance.)
A brave attempt at tackling the problems inherent in time-travel storyline development was almost scuppered when the plot was inadvertently left in the back of a shuttle somwhere in cygnus-eridani 51 and the missing episode has become something of a holy grail amongst 33Century digital archaeologists.Even today mention of this gives certain venture capitalists cause to lick their lips in anticipation.Indeed,in some systems whole industries have grown out of supressing any knowledge of this event.Oops,my ews just lit up,gtg.looks like i'm wanted.

Enterprise was a great idea really. Lots of scope to redraw the whole system, some great actors. No Holodeck.

But sadly, like all the spin-offs from the original, it failed because of poor, turgid, repetitive scripts. TNG was particularly bad for that.

Every episode of the original was just that, individual stories ultimately tackling the human condition. Even when it did stray into American patriotism, it still managed to leave you thinking. Veegap-eeeple, for example.

1. TNG: Sure it was naive with simple solutions to complex problems but I agree with Roddenberry's vision of utopian hope and possibility. Sanctimonious and silly but it had Picard.
2. Enterprise: It had the benefit of being the most modern, portrayed the least technology and had a large budget. It was really starting to get good before they cancelled it but for me, the best part, is that Scott Bakula gets beat up in every episode.
3. DS9: TNG era but with a departure from the episodic nature of it's predecessors. Better scripts, better character development. Boring on a space station though.
4. TOS: Much as I like TOS, it was patronizingly racist and sexist even for the time it was made (there are far more progressive shows in this era and worse ones too, of course). The "fight" scenes were silly (shat to the back, anyone?), the props and sets were hit and miss and the lessons were derived from a simplistic cowboy morality (not hatin' on New Mexico here). That being said there's never been chemistry like Spock, Kirk and McCoy. It's also silly enough to enjoy despite it's flaws. Kirk asks his senior staff for suggestions but totally ignores Uhura and she gets this look on her face (I, Mudd I believe). Says it all.
5. Voyager: I like Janeway at the beginning. Aloof and Picardish. A scientist and an astonomer first, a soldier second. She was written so inconsistently that they ruined her character. Tuvok was okay. Kes was a terrible actor. Harry Kim was obviously stoned most of the time. Paris was okay. B'lanna was too much of a "fiesty woman" stereotype and very one dimensional. I know Seven was hot but sex appeal for ratings insults my intelligence. The doctor was the best actor but I found his voice, cadence and mannerisms irritating.

Best of Both worlds, while it doesn't hold up today (lets put the battle on hold and have a conference!) is still my favorite and the original cliffhanger. The inner light. I thought they ended the series really well but then they went and released Generations. My biggest beef being the destruction of the D by a BoP. All they had to do was put the bad guys on a Vor'Cha and it wouldn't have felt like such a ripoff. (like a stock eagle killing your cutter)

In order. DS9, TNG, Voy, Ent Tos.

Reason of Tos last position.

Its OOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLD! :D
Its just not up to today's standards, not anywhere near to it. Ent 4th place?
Well, let's just say its not discontinued for nothing after the 4th season.
About the first 3? It's debatable. even to myself. I love it all, so it's hard to tell. But some order must be made.

Voyager. It was first ST I came into contact with when it was in TV in mid 90'
And although I went through most of the originals, DS9, etc... and liked them a lot, Voyager stands out for me to this day as one with the most star-treky "exploratory" feel to it. (That feeling of going into unknown is the most important part, for me. Also loved the crew)

I was never particularly fond of the movies, for some reason. (The two new ones are fun, though)

TOS will never be equalled. Even the crappy third season plots sans Rodenberry, who'd had enough of the studio. TNG was so bad it made the 1970s *animated* Star Trek episodes look like masterpieces. A KLINGON on the bridge? Spare me. DS9 and whatever else they churned out just sucked wet shark IMHO. And while I have nothing against large-breasted "aliens" it's an old, lousy sci fi trick. Large, firm, unusually well-shaped alien        ... still no deal.

Just curious - are the votes going along generational lines - the Star Trek you first encountered as a kid?

It is for me - 1960 vintage.

TNG, Picard is the best and most believable captain....although an utter jip the yanks couldn't make him British (can't have a "goody" British can we yanks oh no! ;) ). He even drank tea and loved shakespeare.....how much more BRITISH could Picard be? Data was awesome too, Ryker's squint is legendary.

Voyager next, once they got past the Kazon's, Neelix is only rivalled by Jar Jar Binks as THE most irritating Sci Fi entity in the existance of mankind!

DS9, TOS and Enterpirise = 3rd for me.

Also without TNG being a sucess NONE of the others after would have existed! Yes I know the same could be said for TOS and thus TNG, but I hate Kirk....especially his nipples, on show for 90% of the episode where he fights.....<shudders>

Well to me as a kid Kirk was a hero - and Spock - and McCoy and Bones. When I got older I could see the humour in it which is why I also love Galaxy Quest.

Of course!!! First Trek is best Trek.

Correct! :D

ETA - Picard was great too - after that series it sort of dropped off my radar.

If I was a member of the crew on Voyager, I'd immediately resign my commission. See how they handle that one.

If I were a crew member of any of the later versions, I don't think I'd be spending my Holodeck time solving 19th century Sherlock Holmes mysteries!

Bet they record & review what crew do in the holodeck.
"Oh, we got Ensign Redshirt pants down again - when's the next away mission due...?"
:D

Captain Kirk is iconic. Go out onto the street and ask a passing stranger who's the Captain of the USS Enterprise. Do you think they'll say Archer or Picard? When Nena wanted a short way to sketch out the idea of superhero hi-tech jet fighter pilots, she referred to them as "Everyone a Captain Kirk"

The sets were expanded polystyrene, The acting was wooden, the sexism was grating, but the writing, in some of the episodes, was awesome. Harlan Ellison wrote for the original series. Isaac Asimov was a fan of the show and worked as an advisor for it.
