I sold my clipper for a python, so I'll give you my experience from doing so.
A-rated clipper except for B7 shields; 2 large burst lasers, 2 medium multi's. Loved it! Very fun to fly, could always run away if I needed and the only ships that gave me a hard time were Federal Assault Ships. when I was with lavigny duval I was pulling 5-7 mil credits an hour bounty hunting in hazardous RES's.

Traded for a Python just before engineers hit. I have a c3 shield, c7 power point, and b engines, but everything else critical is A rated. 2 large beams, 1 large multi, 2 medium multies. I'd say that the python is faster to kill ships if a face-to-face fight because of the extra large hardpoint, but it's a lot slower to turn and I have a harder time staying behind a target. I had been really good with my clipper of using the drifting and FA-off o that over the course of an hour i'd only used 1-2 shield cell banks. I've had to run from several fights in my python so far; part of that is the c-rated shields, part of that the change in AI where Elite ships are actually a challenge.

The Clipper was so fun, and I felt much safer in it, but the python is much more flexible for me because of needing a medium pad and a better internal compartment layout. I'll probably go back and buy a clipper again because I love the ship, it depends. I thought the clipper was the perfect ship for teaching me how to really use FA-off/drifting mechanics and effecive power-pip management. Plus the thing was damn sexy and I loved the engine sound.
Hopefully this helps!

My Python is parked until all this hoo-ha resolves itself. Then I will reconsider what to do with it. In the meantime, I'm doing missions in an Imperial Eagle that I ran out to the Engineer to put enhanced thrusters on. It's turned out to be a LOT of fun to fly. So that's my current plan. Fly cheap ships until I get the lay of the land, after they fix whatever bugs they're going to fix and do whatever balancing they're going to do.

If I could only have one ship, it would have to be the Asp Explorer. It's fast, can jump long distances, can haul a lot of cargo, it can fight and has enough resilience to survive and run when outclassed.

This.

I have been through most of the ships in game including the clipper, I always end up back in my asp explorer because it is so well rounded and the canopy is just awesome with the new graphics. I am going to pimp it with engineers stuff as much as I can.

Trouble is in the other ships you cant see sod all out the window!

Asp is a very solid ship for this expansion. It's fast enough to run from most interdicting NPCs, decent cargo space, spectacular jump range, medium pad.

It's drawback is the same as that plaguing many multirole ships (Clipper also suffers from this) ... it has two massive internals, and the rest is tiny. So you can have two of decent shields, decent fuel scoop, decent cargo ... but not all three.

I've always regretted when I decided to "downgrade" back to a previous ship. But this is 2.1 and the dynamics have shifted. Hard to say, but probably stick it out with the Clipper until you get the Python. Good luck [up]

If I'd replied 10 mins ago, I'd have voted "Save for a Python". I'd have said, stick turrets on, go to a High RES and you'll be fine. Yesterday, I spent ~6 hours without any problems mining, then bounty hunting and harvesting mats at a HIGH RES site in my A spec turreted Python.

20 mins ago, it all went t*t* up and I've just shelled out 6.5 million insurance. Why? 'Cos I was scanned then attacked 5 NPCs (Deadly Vulture, Master FDL, Dangerous Sidey, Dangerous Python and 1 other I didn't have chance to ID) as soon as I dropped into my favorite High RES. My mistake was to take loads of collector limpets to harvest mats. My bad luck was the RNG and poor police response.

I'm a bit apprehensive about taking out such a slow ship to High RES again, and might switch back to my FAS, drop the collector limpets and do manual scooping.

Good luck in your decision!

Sorry to hear of your loss and thanks for the advice.

General consensus of opinion here and generally after 2.1; is to park up the 'below par' Clipper and step down to a smaller ship, which I can do. I have my trusty Cobra for cargo mission running and I my Courier for hitting the RES sites. I will use those, to up the credits in my account and buff up the Clipper. A class thrusters 1st and then take things from there.

Again, thanks everyone for your shared experience and advice.

Sorry if this was a bit long. It's my first post here and I don't post much in general.

It was good. Have rep!

I'd take that Courier, fly over to Felicity and fit it with those new Enhanced Thrusters. No ingredients needed. 5 million to buy.

Strip off the excess weight, ( guns, drop to class 2 shield ) and it'll easily outrun a Cobra.
You can do any mission and not worry about being overpowered - nothing can catch you.

Go to get an Asp next, is what I'd do. It earns faster and safer than most ships.
You can get a Python later on.

Which I believe will become my 'later game' killing machine.
I couldn't decide if I would upgrade to the FDL or Python from my clipper; went with the python because of the internals. much more flexibility. hauling, hunting, mining (sigh), combat, etc. I will say though that 2 large beams and 2m, 1l multicannon combo is sweet.

the better idea...

Just buy a Vultutre fit in A modules... and bounty hunt in a high res and make 5 Million an hour until you can buy the python with proper modules.... thats how i did it!
Than I sold the python and got me an FAS which I am much happier with... :D

Keep the clipper, use it for trading. Buy a Imperial Courier, max it out for 9 million credits or so and pew pew.

Job done

I have to say, I've been using my A rated python for about 2 days now, and I feel just as safe in it as my a rated FDL, really the only solo ships that give me trouble in both, are deadly or higher anacondas. I seriously think I'll be using this ship 75% of the time, because it's so versatile, and I actually love fighting in it. I only have a couple HRPs on it, because I have limpets, interdictor, etc and it set up for collecting engineering materials/components, and I still find it holds up defensively better than my FDL. I find the firepower on par or maybe even a bit better than my FDL. I've been getting interdicted all day and I've only ran once from an elite anaconda. I've taken out several high ranked FAS, FGS, etc. I don't have to worry as much as I do in my FDL when the shields drop. A well kitted FAS or FGS, will take my hull down fast in my FDL, the python holds up much better IMO, and I can stack several more HRPs on it. I don't mind it's maneuverability at all either, but I a rated it right off the bat as well. I can't wait to upgrade the thrusters on it through the engineers. The overalll better internals, and the way you can set it up easily makes me love this ship, it's just so versatile. I've always read about how people love there pythons, and now I understand why.

I've always saved enough money to A rate every ship I've bought, before I've buy the ship. I just find it much more rewarding, to have it maxed right away, then to have it sub par and have to grind more to max it. The only ship I haven't a rated right away is my cutter, because it's soley a trade ship, and no use making the buyback any higher.

Speaking of the cutter, I know it's fast, but it's the worst turning of the big 3 ships. I think I only have c or D thrusters on mine, and it still boosts 334 or so. I wonder if modding the thrusters and ginormous shield generator that I can put on, make this ship any good at battle? I don't like the hardpoint placements in it so well, and it seems lacking in keeping up with weapon fire, even with an A rated distributor. I was just curious if any of you have done modding on it, or if it's even worth it.

Tested the Cutter fully upgraded in beta, it's a wonder, it turns ok enough to put gimballed on it, the speed is incredible, and if you choose your weapons wisely the distributor is not an issue at all (especially once modded).

If i had the ranks to buy a cutter, i would put 2 large regeneration beams and everything else Incendiary Multi-cannons (4 medium 1 huge), making it the perfect ship for any activity, and can heal in wings, or wreck anything with the multi's.

Okay that's what I like to hear. Saves me from buying anaconda just for blowing stuff up. I'll definitely be modding it, probably after my python and maybe FDL first. I imagine with A rated thrusters modded, it does get pretty fast and maneuvers better.

I just wish you could store your modded parts, as I only have a 6A shield generator in it. I would want the 8a (at around 143 million on discount), but that's one of my 256 cargo racks. I would like to mod them too, the cargo racks, but I would lose them each time I switched out for battle. Maybe they will implement that feature someday.

FER DE LANCE

Before the update I'd have agreed 100%, and to this day it's still my main BHing ship. But in the light of new AI, the FDL is a ship best piloted with decent FA Off experience; the clipper is more forgiving if you don't have that under your belt.

Can't imagine using the FDL and not being able to drift/fire past targets.
