Engineers Argh, no storage. Here's a warning to others

I've been going along gathering stuff for an FSD upgrade. I've been doing the missions and whatnot in an Imperial Courier for safety reasons (lower rebuy, and with the various interdiction and insta-kill bugs this last week it seemed like a good idea :) ) I finally got a mission that rewarded me with the last component I needed, so I was deciding which ship to upgrade. Originally I was going to do my Python first, but I changed my mind because I want to fly something a little more combat oriented for safety while doing missions/trading. So I thought, yeah, I'll upgrade the FAS instead.

But I can't, because it currently has no cargo hold, so I can't go get it and retain the commodities I just finally got!

So now I'm out of luck. I'll have to use the upgrade on another ship this time, I guess, and then go get the FAS, fit some cargo holds to it for the future, and then repeat the entire damn process, because the game won't let me use the materials and commodities I've already gathered, to upgrade the ship I want to upgrade, because no storage.

Argh.

So I'm posting this as a warning to others to hopefully save you some annoyance. Before you go gathering and spending the time for that, first go around and add cargo holds to any ships you might want to upgrade, even if you're not sure yet. That'll save you from being blocked like I am.

Upgrade the module on another ship that is the same size as the one in your fas, then swap them, job done.

That might actually work. I'd have to get a ship just for that reason and sell it after. It's too late this time I used the upgrade on my Courier, but it's a work around I hadn't thought of. Repped.

As a workaround for an incredibly silly omission that does work. Otherwise if you can't afford another ship to act as a storage unit you are SOL.

Can you buy a new ship with stuff in your cargo hold?

Only if that ship comes with a large enough cargo hold for all your stuff. Otherwise.. you're hosed again.

This is imbecile. no less. its even more stupid than idiotic , which is bad.

Cheers Cmdr's

Cargo storage was a must have feature for the Engineers update...... i really don't know what they are thinking. Worst part is on the beta nobody noticed because FISH.........

Sorry - guess I am too "new" to the forum for people to filter into my posts.....so will post the thread I created here instead.....

Upgrading new ships at point of purchase????[/h]
This is NOT another thread on Storage but on similar topic.....
I've just lost rep and Credits because my nicely stacked set of delivery missions to a single location decided to change one of them to a new Outpost location which I cannot land at.
Unfortunately as this particular mission is 84T worth of cargo, and although there are many ships nearby for sale that can carry that with standard upgrades, they can't do it from stock. Therefore I cannot change ships and must ditch the mission.

I'm not whining - there has been plenty on the forums about destination changes and pad sizes, and you take your chances right?

Anyway, what I DO think might be a good suggestion is to allow (at usual cost etc) modification of a new ship you want to purchase. Something like......

"The ship you have chosen has only 34t cargo capacity but your current cargo is 84t. You will need to upgrade it prior to purchase and it will cost x Cr"

Any supporters?

People noticed, people made threads about it. I made one in fact. But I noticed several others pointing out the fairly huge flaw in the system.

Cargo storage is an absolute must now, I have 64 cargo made up of items that are marked as for use with engineers that I really don't want to sell or eject. So I am limited to my Anaconda and Python and comp nav and any res site is off limit's as I am getting nailed within 30 seconds by every tom and harry after my stuff.

Storage is coming but you don't need to horde all that stuff. Mission rewards are far more common than people think. I've managed to upgrade my ship almost completely now and have not really needed to hang on to anything. Just plan ahead on mats you want to collect then get the commodities last and head straight to the engineer.

Python runs the same FSD as the Asp and the FAS. I've been swapping a grade 4 modded one between those 3 ships all week. Upgrade the Python then sell and rebuy it on the FAS.

I won't participate in engineers until they have a storage system. No sense in going through all that trouble if you are going to change ships later.

Also some way of selling materials because jettisoning them is the most infuriating thing I have to do... after working to get them I can do nothing but jettison them

It took me a couple of days to find a mission that gave me modular terminals (commodities), so I wanted to keep them while I continue to look for chemical processors (materials). However, I think you are right, given the current situation, it would be better to just dump or sell the modular terminals and wait until I have the chemical processors. Then hopefully find another mission to give me the terminals again after. Dragging them around with me is interfering with missions and trading. Bah.

Depending upon your budget you could buy a stock FAS and upgrade it, then swap out its components to your stored FAS later. But yeah, it's a pain.

The other side of the issue is that selling your current ship to buy a new one is no longer an option if you've made any significant modifications to it. You could buy back an equivalent ship later, but the mods would be gone for good.So until module storage is a thing, we're all encouraged to build up fleets if there's any chance we might want to use a ship again later.

Before you start down the engineers path, go to all you stored ships and add cargo racks to them. It will save you a ton of trouble later down the line.

Thing about buying and selling ships with better jump range for module modding for another ship is the 10% loss on ship value on sell. Fine for smaller ships, pretty expensive for larger ones. A pretty daft situation really.
