Should Elite have some sort of test to gain Combat Rank?

Since the AI has been updated and it's pretty obvious your combat rank does not signify your actual skill at combat, should FD add some sort of skill test to gain additional combat rank (similar to games like Warframe)? Thoughts?

I am Dangerous rank now, but I'd fail this test intentionally just so I dont have to deal with the crazy Elite cobras and Deadly FAS that keep on intercepting me.

Why do you care what's written on my screen?

Don't care at all, it was just a thought due to the fact that your combat rank influences your spawns and it appears CMDRS are having issues dealing with spawns of there current combat ranking. Just a thought.

No !
Why? because thats not how it works in lore.

Didn't think about that, good point.

Spawning npcs according to rank is another word for "level scaling", the worst game technique used, when devs are lazy to design the game properly. Robs players of choice and achievement and is opposite to player immersion and fun.
Any sane game would spawn progressively harder enemies in zones that are progressively more profitable (in any way...). Logical and clean. Where it is safe, prices are down. Buy where safe, sell where dangerous (for profit) or grind in safe zone.
Mine gold with other losers safely, mine painite with the (dangerous) pros.

But no, in fdev, pirate in anaconda will attack you over five tons of copper. I wish fdev could wake up.

Obviously, exploration could be the same, but fdev would rather work on perfectly balanced bobbleheads and rng-grind engineers, that 90% of players hate for poor game design.
(kudos to gui and other nongame design departments, looks really good)

That's actually a good idea. I mean as it is now as you kill you will eventually go up in rank regardless of how long it took you or how good you actually are.

Having a "test" might actually let people stay at a level which challenges them without it being a huge struggle beyond their scope of skill.

I find it very amusing how people who farmed there way to elite rating by shooting fish in a barrel like boring ai, now because of there rating keep bumping into elite ai and are now bleating.

I enjoyed the AI in the betas, actually had fun in combat for the first time in an age, and was actually planning to do more combat related stuff. If its to easy again I won't bother.

Well, since your rank can supposedly affect the number of high rank NPCs you will see, it isn't a crazy idea.

I see a number of posts explaining that combat rank doesn't affect the AI, only what you do in game affects that. I'd like a definitive response from FD just to clarify though.

........or they could simply allow you to choose by linking the NPC interdictor level with the mission ranking difficulty as they communicated pre 2.1 but instead they removed choice and linked it to your rank.

Why would the mob dispatcher send an elite pirate to engage an elite trader carrying cargo designated as low importance? Makes no sense. You'd think that, that highly ranked NPC has better more important engagements to handle that you with that merchant level mission.

However, if you accept a mission that is tycoon/deadly or elite then its considered an important run to be stopped be it the data or cargo and then expect your run to be interfered with by high level NPCs.

Just untether it from ones personal rank and only to the mission.

Base NPC encounters on income earned through combat is such a bad idea I have no idea how the person who first spoke it didn't take a Vow of Silence in shame.

1. Not every ship is a combat ship. If you hit Elite in combat then catch Space Madness do you really need Triple Elite FDL wings chasing after your Asp?

2. Rank can only increase. On a long enough timeline everyone hits Elite

So, Combat Rank can not be used to determine the skill of the player nor their ships ability.

Do we actually know for sure that combat rank has an effect on the type of ships that spawn for you? I am ranked "Competent", but I am still stalked by Elite Anacondas, FDL's and FAS'...

When has NPC encounters been based on income earned?

You gain rank by destroying ships of near equal rank or above, it's point based. Once you start to reach the higher ranks, the lower ranks don't count towards your Combat Ranking. You could spend 10 years killing Harmless pilots and never reach Elite status.
